A & U Children AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 Tiger Daughter Rebecca Lim

Wen Zhou is determined to create a future for herself that is more satisfying than the life her parents expect her to lead. Equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful, Tiger Daughter is a wonderfully compelling and authentic Own Voices novel about growing up Asian in Australia.

Description My study buddy, Henry, has made it his mission to get me to an A in maths the way I'm trying to get him to an A in English.

Wen Zhou is the daughter and only child of Chinese immigrants whose move to the lucky country has proven to be not so lucky. Wen and her friend, Henry Xiao - whose mum and dad are also poor immigrants - both dream of escape from their unhappy circumstances, and they form a plan to sit an entrance exam to a selective high school far from home. But when tragedy strikes, it will take all of Wen's resilience and resourcefulness to get herself and Henry through the storm that follows.

Tiger Daughter is a novel that will grab hold of you and not let go.

A & U Children AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 Iceberg Claire Saxby, illustrated by Jess Racklyeft

An iceberg is born into spring and travels through the seasons before dying in a new spring. A stunning, lyrical story for our times, from renowned picture book creators Claire Saxby and Jess Racklyeft.

Description In the final freeze of an Antarctic winter, green tails wave across a star-full sky, as if to farewell endless nights. If this world looks empty, look closer ... Penguins trek across the ice to their winter homes. As the temperature warms, birds fly above on their long migrations. And with the advent of summer, beneath an iceberg, the sea is teeming with life. Ocean, sky, snow and ice - minute greens and giant blues - dance a delicate dance in this evocative portrayal of the life cycle of an iceberg.

About the Author Claire Saxby was born in Melbourne, moved to Newcastle as a toddler and to Bougainville Island in PNG when she was ten. She attended many schools around Australia before studying in Melbourne to become a podiatrist. For several years Claire worked in community health while simultaneously writing for children. Her books fall into three main categories: animals and the worlds they live in, history, and humour. Claire's work has won several awards including CBCA Honour Book, a NSW Premier's Literary Award, a SCBWI Crystal Kite Award, an Environment Award for Children's Literature, an Educational Publishing Award and the Whitley Award multiple times. She is widely curious about just about everything and passionate about encouraging curiosity and wonder. Claire works part-time in a bookshop.

Jess Racklyeft creates a variety of illustrated things - picture books, paintings, prints, pins and cards - mainly in watercolours. She works from her Melbourne home studio with her cat and dog at her feet, and occasionally one of her kids joins in too. Her work often combines collage - either on paper or digitally assembled - and lots of ink, and for every book she tries to use a new technique or process to continue to challenge and grow, book by book. Jess worked in publishing sales for almost a decade before making the leap to full-time illustration work, and since then has won several illustration accolades including two CBCA Notable Picture Book of the Year awards. Her work can now be found in bookshops and libraries across Australia and her days are happily spent in a messy studio or visiting local storytimes with

A & U Children AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 The Boy from the Mish Gary Lonesborough

A funny and heart-warming queer Indigenous YA novel, set in a rural Australian community, about seventeen- year-old Jackson finding the courage to explore who he is, even if it scares him.

Description 'I don't paint so much anymore,' I say, looking to my feet.

'Oh. Well, I got a boy who needs to do some art. You can help him out,' Aunty Pam says, like I have no say in the matter, like she didn't hear what I just said about not painting so much anymore. 'Jackson, this is Tomas. He's living with me for a little while.'

It's a hot summer, and life's going all right for Jackson and his family on the Mish. It's almost Christmas, school's out, and he's hanging with his mates, teasing the visiting tourists, avoiding the racist boys in town. Just like every year, Jackson's Aunty and annoying little cousins visit from the city - but this time a mysterious boy with a troubled past comes with them… As their friendship evolves, Jackson must confront the changing shapes of his relationships with his friends, family and community. And he must face his darkest secret - a secret he thought he'd locked away for good.

Compelling, honest and beautifully written, The Boy from the Mish is about first love, identity, and the superpower of self- belief.

'A book I've been searching for over my whole career... [it] awed me with the power of its storytelling.' DAVID LEVITHAN, Scholastic US Editorial Director

Nosy Crow AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 Out of Nowhere Chris Naylor-Ballesteros

A beautiful, touching tale full of heart and visual humour from the creator of The Suitcase.

Description A feel-good picture book about friendship and change, from the bestselling author of The Suitcase, translated into over 20 languages.

Beetle and Caterpillar are best friends. Every day, they sit together on a big rock, sharing a picnic and looking out over the forest. But one day, Caterpillar goes missing and, try as he might, Beetle cannot find her. Just as he is about to give up hope, a very friendly (and rather familiar) butterfly appears out of nowhere. Can it be his friend? She might look different but she is still just the same and they are together again, at last.

A heartwarming story from bestselling author, Chris Naylor-Ballesteros, shortlisted for Oscar's Prize 2020 and The Kate Greenaway Award 2020.

About the Author Chris is originally from Bradford and studied illustration and graphic design at Bradford College of Art. In 2000 he moved to France where, amongst other things, he was an English teacher before working in newspaper layout and design.

When his children were small he realised he loved the picture books he read to them, sometimes even more than his children did - the Picture Book Bug had truly bitten. Nosy Crow AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 The Suitcase Chris Naylor-Ballesteros

A touching, timely tale about the importance of kindness and understanding.

Description When a strange-looking animal arrives pulling a big suitcase, the other animals are curious. What on earth could be inside that suitcase? A teacup? Maybe. A table and chair? Perhaps. A whole home and hillside with trees? This stranger must be fibbing! But when the animals break into the suitcase and discover a very special photograph, they begin to understand what the strange creature has been through, and together they create a very special welcome present . . .

Chris has since written and illustrated several books and is currently thinking about the next one, probably with a cuppa in hand at home near Limoges. He likes listening to and making music, wandering around the countryside, a bit of running and riding a bike. His favourite season is autumn and his favourite colour is green.

Nosy Crow AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2021 Superhero Gran illustrated by Joe Berger, Timothy Knapman

A celebration of just how super grans can be.

Description All grandmothers are wonderful and the gran in this story is no exception. She might not lift buildings or go whooshing through the sky, but she can plan super sleepovers, tell super-funny stories and even put together super disguises. This gran really does have super powers!

About the Author Timothy Knapman is the author of Superhero Dad, Superhero Mum and The Winter Fox. He has written lots of picture books including Dinosaurs in the Supermarket, Mungo and the Spiders From Space (and its sequels), Eleanor's Eyebrows and Guess What I Found in Dragon Wood. He also writes fiction and non-fiction for children, and his books have been translated into fifteen languages. In his spare time, Tim writes plays and musicals, because on stage, as between the covers of a book, the real and the fantastical can collide, and that is where all great storytelling comes from.

Joe Berger, the illustrator of Hubble Bubble, Granny Trouble and the Superhero series, is a children's author, illustrator and cartoonist who also makes the occasional award-winning animated short film and title-sequence. He is co-creator of the Berger & Wyse food cartoon in magazine each Saturday, and has illustrated numerous books, inside and out, for children and grown-ups.
