  • CHAPTER 3 Hong Kong Music Ecosphere
Abstract The people of Hong Kong experienced their deepest sense of insecurity and anxiety after the handover of sovereignty to Beijing. Time and again, the incapacity and lack of credibility of the SAR government has been manifested in various new policies or incidents. Hong Kong people’s anger and discontent with the government have reached to the peak. On July 1, 2003, the sixth anniversary of the hand-over of Hong Kong to China, 500,000 demonstrators poured through the streets of Hong Kong to voice their concerns over the proposed legislation of Article 23 and their dissatisfaction to the SAR government. And the studies of politics and social movement are still dominated by accounts of open confrontations in the form of large scale and organized rebellions and protests. If we shift our focus on the terrain of everyday life, we can find that the youth voice out their discontents by different ways, such as various kinds of media. This research aims to fill the gap and explore the relationship between popular culture and politics of the youth in Hong Kong after 1997 by using one of the local bands KingLyChee as a case study. Politically, it aims at discovering the hidden voices of the youth and argues that the youth are not seen as passive victims of structural factors such as education system, market and family. Rather they are active and strategic actors who are capable of negotiating with and responding to the social change of Hong Kong society via employing popular culture like music by which the youth obtain their pleasure of producing their own meanings of social experience and the pleasure of avoiding the social discipline of the power-bloc.

  • St. John's Cathedral HIV Education Centre 2016 Report
St. John’s Cathedral HIV Education Centre 2016 Report Elijah Fung, Centre Manager A NEW VISION FOR TODAY In 2015, St. John’s Cathedral conducted a review of its outreach ministries to ensure that they provide services in line with the current needs of the Hong Kong society. In order to address recommendations that emerged from this review SJHIV Centre staff have met and dialogued with a comprehensive range of stakeholders, donors, supporters and volunteers to fine-tune, reposition and broaden our mission and the services we offer. Given the accumulated expertise and extensive network that the Centre has developed over the last two decades it is felt that we should continue to offer education and support to maligned minority groups within society that are at high risk of HIV infection but also broaden our services to include Life Education to children, youth and parents. Our vision is to provide a Life Education that helps children, young people, and their parents understand how to live healthy and fulfilling lives, respecting the diversity within both our communities and creation. We would appreciate your prayers and support during this transition period as our board and staff discern what is best for our Centre's mission in the years ahead. OUR INVOLVEMENT WITH YOUTH AND COMMUNITY In 2016, in addition to our regular education programmes at schools and within the community, we organized a series of AIDS-related programmes to engage young people all of which were aimed at strengthening and empowering young people with up-dated facts and skills that can enable them to work towards “Zero New HIV Infections, Zero HIV-related Discrimination & Zero AIDS-related Deaths” in society.

In April 2003 arbitral awards were made in France and Switzerland against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). France and Switzerland are parties to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. The plaintiff company has acquired the benefit of those awards and has obtained leave in Hong Kong to enforce the awards and injunctions to prevent third parties transferring assets allegedly due to the DRC. The DRC has claimed immunity from jurisdiction and from the process of execution. The Court of First Instance has set aside leave and the injunctions. This is an appeal from that decision. 2. This appeal addresses the questions whether an application for leave to enforce an arbitral award made under the New York Convention against a State impleads that foreign State; whether the law of Hong Kong requires application of the doctrine of absolute state immunity from jurisdiction and execution, as opposed to the restrictive doctrine; and whether by agreeing to refer a dispute to arbitration in a New York Convention country, to be conducted according to the Rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), a foreign State which is not a party to the Convention waives such state immunity from jurisdiction and execution to which it is otherwise entitled.

In 2017, the National Endowment for Democracy published the Sharp Power: Rising Authoritarian Infuence in the Democratic World, investigating inter- ventions from China and Russia in diferent parts of the world.1 Also, Taiwan scholar Wu Jieh-min advocated the “China Factor” as an analytical framework. The China Factor mainly refers to “the process by which the PRC government utilises capital and related resources to absorb other countries and ‘ofshore districts’ (such as Hong Kong) into its sphere of economic infuence, thereby making them economically de- pendent on China to further facilitate its political infuence.”2 Wu further pointed out that the operation of the China Factor mechanism required the cooperation of political agencies or local collaborators so that the infuence of China could penetrate diferent spheres of politics, economics, social and cultural, making the China Factor be more impactful.
