From an Adoptee - I am a parishioner here at The Church of St. Patrick for the past 17 years I am now 51 years old. Born Sunday, May 12, 1968 (Mother’s Day) in New York. Bapzed five days later at St. Vincent’s in Manhaan and Adopted September 10th that same year at 4 months old. I don’t recall ever being sat down and told by my parents, “We have something to tell you . . . You’re adopted”. There never was that big moment most people expect. I have been asked many mes, “When did your parents tell you?” The fact s, I always knew. From the very beginning, my mother always shared with me the joyous story of the day she received “THE CALL”, saying I was here if they were ready to meet me. Within days, they tell me they planned for my arrival. When they brought me home, the big Italian family was there to greet me outside. Every aunt, uncle and cousin welcomed me lovingly with gi s and open arms. My cousins became my “brothers and sisters” and to this day there is a special bond between all of us that is undeniable as we have spent our lives sharing holidays and summer vacaons together, even once we were grown.

I have never felt “adopted”, I have always simply felt the love and loyalty of being a part of a big family with beauful tradions. As I aged and would look in the mirror at myself, the one queson that I wanted to know was simply, “Why do I look the way I look”. The only way to know the answer to this was to find my biological parents. My parents always, from the very beginning offered to assist me in finding them. However, I personally felt it would be so hurul to them. I felt as though they would feel “they weren't good enough and I was looking for more”. So, I never searched. My mom and dad ARE my Parents. There has never been anyone I considered to be my mom and dad other than them. They have been there though my illnesses (which there were many), through my struggles and through my joys. My mother passed away a er a long illness in 2011 and I sll miss my mother ever single day but I am blessed to sll have my father. I will always be “daddy's lile girl”. I look forward to the day I am reunited with my mother in eternal life. Unl then, As I did every single year when I was growing up, sll celebrate September 10th as my birthday as that was truly the day my life began.

I would like to share a part of a leer that I received from the adopon agency 45+ years a er my adopon. It was so important to me to receive this informaon for now I am able to put the last piece of missing puzzle into place. If I had the opportunity to say something to my birthmother, it would be THANK YOU! Thank you for choosing life. Thank you for not being selfish and showing me love and care as you wanted me to have the best upbringing, being part of a united family with a strong Catholic faith. I have been provided with amazing opportunies in my life and I could not have wrien my life story any beer than how it has played out. I have never once felt unloved or scared. I have family memories that I will cherish unl my last breath. I thank you for choosing life.

An Excerpt From the New York Foundling Adopon Agency:

“In late March, 1968, your birth mother’s sister came to the Foundling, asking for assistance with maternity home care for your mother and adopon placement for her child. Your birth mother was 31 years old, single, supporng herself, and living in the Northeast with five of her siblings. She returned from Italy in April and on May 2, 1968, entered a maternity home. “

“You were born on May 12, 1968, in St. Vincent’s Hospital. Your birth mother saw and cared for you while you were in the hospital. On May 17th, you were discharged from the hospital. A social worker brought you to the Foundling, where you were bapzed on that day, in the Foundling Chapel by Rev. E.F. Kelly. On June 19th and July 11th, your birth mother came to see you. On July 11th you were cleared for adopon.”

“Your birth mother was quite ambivalent about planning for you. She wanted to provide you with a tradional Catholic two parent home. She hoped to marry your birth father; but this was not to be. Without marriage, she believed adopon was the best plan for your future. On August 10th, she signed a legal surrender for you to be adopted. On Sept. 10th, your adopve parents came to meet you. They were thrilled and excited and said you were more beauful than they ever expected. You went home with them

5 NEWS from The Health & Caring Ministry

November 19th is the Great American Smoke Out day. Smoking is implicated in cancer of the lung, cervix, larynx, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, kidney and stomach. It is strongly related to heart disease, high blood pressure, emphysema, osteoporosis and even premature wrinkling. About 34 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of disease, premature death and illness in the United States.

Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths every year in the United States, or about 1 in 5 deaths. More than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. While the cigarette smoking rate has dropped significantly, from 42% in 1965 to 14% in 2017, the gains have been inconsistent. Some groups of Americans suffer disproportionately from smoking-related cancer and other diseases, including those who have less education, who live below the poverty level, or who suffer from serious psychological distress, as well as certain racial and ethnic groups, and lesbians, gays and bisexuals.

Quitting smoking improves health immediately and over the long term – at any age. Stopping smoking is hard, but you can increase your chances of success with help. Getting help through counseling and medications doubles or even triples your chances of quitting successfully.

A word about Vaping

Nicotine in vaping products makes it harder to quit. There is more nicotine in one e-cig. than in a pack of cigarettes. Vaping before 25 years of age rewires the brain to intensify addiction. Vaping may damage the lung cells of the user, while nicotine and e-liquids can lead to inflammation of the lungs. In particular, research shows that e-cig exposure may cause asthma. Studies show there is a degree of toxicity that comes with regular vaping. These toxic agents could lead to lung inflammation, lung infection or a generally depressed performance of your pulmonary system. Vaping can take a toll on oral health as well. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry says vaping is just as bad for your teeth and gums as cigarette smokingJoin— usand isfor linked High with gum Schooldisease, bad breath, teeth grinding, gum recession and a weakened immune system. Youth Group! Vaping causes cancer. A new study warns: Human cells mutated faster than expected after exposure to e- cigarettes. Vaping causes DNA mutations which lead to cancer, a new study warns. Researchers subjected cultured human bladder and lung cells to e-cigarette vapor which is designed to avoid the carcinogenic byproducts of tobacco.

Nationally, there have been 1,299 cases of acute lung illness associated with vaping as of Oct. 8, and 29 deaths as of Oct. 10, including a 17-year-old from the Bronx, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments.

6 FormerBY SUSAN LAIELLI lawyer | NOVEMBER visits 5, 2019 prisoners to teach theSaras oBibleta | Retirement for many successful former Florida labor attorneys might encompass sunny days on the golf course and fancy lunches with his wife and friends, but not for Gene Tischer. He spends weekdays giving back to others in the name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Most days Gene might be found teaching Bible study at St. Patrick Parish in Sarasota, volunteering to gather food and supplies for a homeless mission in Bradenton, or serving as a Gene Tischer, of St. Patrick Parish in Diocese of Venice Prison Minister at the DeSoto Correctional Sarasota, volunteers with the Diocese of Facility and the Florida Commitment Center in Arcadia. Venice Prison Outreach at the DeSoto Every Wednesday he awakes before dawn to prepare for the 135 Correctional Institution in Arcadia. -mile round trip to the prison in Arcadia, where he holds Bible study classes for some of the most isolated people in society — convicted felons.

He admitted the men are so thankful for the teachings of the Bible and it becomes clear those in attendance want to repent for their mistakes, which is why Gene said he does this type of volunteerism. “These are souls, and no soul shall be left behind,” he said.

Since November 2016, he has been volunteering with the Diocese of Venice Prison Ministry first inside the Sarasota County Jail before being asked to join the DeSoto Correctional Facility in March of this year. He recalled how that happened. “There wasn’t much to it. Father Russell asked me to join the prison ministry team in Arcadia. “Have you seen Father Russell?” Gene said, laughing. “It’s hard to say no to him.” Father Russell Wright, parochial vicar of the St. Patrick Parish in Sarasota, is known to be persuasive when he believes in a cause such as sharing the Bible with prisoners.

Teaching the Bible is something Gene is not only passionate about but is skilled and trained to do. He entered St. Andrew Seminary in Rochester, N.Y., as a junior in high school, followed by four years at St. Bernard College Seminary. He attended Gregorian University in Rome for one year before deciding to study law at Georgetown University, where he met his wife, Bobby. The pair would adopt two sons, Jason and Tanner, just like his parents did when they thought they couldn’t have children. “I was quite a surprise for my parents,” Gene recalled, being the youngest and only biological child of his parents, who raised all three children in Victor, N.Y.

When talking with the prisoners in the Bible study class he tries to instill a better thought process in the men to have improved judgment in the future. “I feel terrible sympathy for what some of these guys did. I feel much sympathy for the victim’s families, too,” Gene said. “I tell these guys, it’s a horrible thing that you did, but Jesus died for your soul, he was on that cross and sees your face. He knew you were going to kill that guy, and he still wants you to live with him in heaven — now do the work to get there.”

He exudes joy and confidence, which must be difficult these days as his wife battles chronic lymphocytic leukemia and is now taking oral chemotherapy. But in typical Gene style he changes the subject to someone else’s misfortune. “Please pray for our friend’s 16-year old child who is now battling an aggressive tumor.”

Sunday, Nov. 3rd, brought a close to the Fall 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil around the world.

Here in Sarasota, nearly 100 faithful prayer warriors came together at Planned Parenthood, to give thanks for a successful vigil and raise their voices in song to God, who strengthened them throughout the 40 Days of prayer and fasting. Most of those that attended, then joined in a Jericho Walk, surrounding the entire block 7 times in silent prayer, as in Biblical times, when God told the Israelites how they should bring down the walls of Jericho. It was when the people of God, by faith, followed His commands, that these walls came down.

The children of Israel believed that God was who He said He was, and trusted in Him to do what He said He would do. Those that pray before this place of death for the unborn, believe that God's promises are just as certain, and that just as He gave the Israelites victory over their enemy, He will bring victory over the evil of abortion, if we have true faith. Our faith is the evidence to others that we truly believe in Him. However, faith without action is dead, and Ephesians, Chapter 6, tells us to put on our armor and stand against Evil. We do this when we stand in defense of the defenseless, and there is none more defenseless than a child in the womb at Planned Parenthood.

Over 700 prayer warriors came from over 24 churches, of many faiths, to pray for the walls of hardened hearts to come down, along with the laws that allow the killing of an innocent child to become a "choice" for women to legally make. For the first time, since 40 Days for Life began here in 2007, 100% of the hours were covered for 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. St. Patrick Church covered 3 full 12-hour days for the first time ever, with 87 parishioners participating, many for multiple hours, because they believe that God hears our prayers and trust that He will bring victory in the face of this evil. We trust that lives were, and will be, saved by our prayers and our presence. Thank you to all who did participate and continue to join in those prayers.

According to a recent Guttmacher Institute report, the abortion rate in the U.S. is now less than half of what it was in 1990. It was down from 926,000 in the previous 2014 report, to 862,000 in 2017. Michael New, a social researcher at Catholic University of America, said, “This shows that pro-life efforts to change public opinion, assist pregnant women, and pass protective laws are all having an impact.”

The 40 Days Prayer Vigil will coincide with Lent in 2020, kicking off on Ash Wednesday and ending on Palm Sunday.
