The 'Teachers' of Mani in the Acta Archelai and Simon Magus
THE ‘TEACHERS’ OF MANI IN THE ACTA ARCHELAI AND SIMON MAGUS 1 by ESZTER SPÄT Abstract: This paper aims to prove that the biography of Mani in the Acta Archelae of Hegemonius, which contains a great number of completely ctitious elements, was in fact drawn up on the le of Simon Magus, pater omnium haereticorum , using the works of heresiologists and the apocryphal acts, espe- cially the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitiones , as a model and source. There are a great number of elements in this Vita Manis that bear a strong resemblance to the well known motives of Simon’s life. Projecting Simon’s life over that of Mani serves as tool to reinforce the image of Mani that Hegemonius tried to convey: that of just another ‘run of the mill’ heretic, one in the long line of the disciples of Simon, and a fraud and devoid of any originality. The Acta Archelai of Hegemonius, 2 composed between 330 and 348 in Syria, 3 was the rst Christian work written against Manichaeans. The text of the Acta, as a whole, has survived only in the Latin translation, though a great part of its Greek text has been preserved in the Panarion (or ‘Medicine Chest’) of Epiphanius, who seems to have often copied his source almost word for word in the chapter on Manichaeism. 4 Besides being the rst it was also, in many respects, the most in uential. Numismatic Evidence of the Jewish Origins of the Cross T. B. Cartwright December 5, 2014 Introduction Anticipation for the Jewish Messiah’s first prophesied arrival was great and widespread. Both Jewish and Samaritan populations throughout the known world were watching because of the timeframe given in Daniel 9. These verses, simply stated, proclaim that the Messiah’s ministry would begin about 483 years from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 445BC. So, beginning about 150 BC, temple scribes began placing the Hebrew tav in the margins of scrolls to indicate those verses related to the “Messiah” or to the “Last Days.” The meaning of the letter tav is “sign,” “symbol,” “promise,” or “covenant.” Shortly after 150 BC, the tav (both + and X forms) began showing up on coins throughout the Diaspora -- ending with a flurry of the use of the symbol at the time of the Messiah’s birth. The Samaritans, in an effort to remain independent of the Jewish community, utilized a different symbol for the anticipation of their Messiah or Tahib. Their choice was the tau-rho monogram, , which pictorially showed a suffering Tahib on a cross. Since the Northern Kingdom was dispersed in 725 BC, there was no central government authority to direct the use of the symbol. So, they depended on the Diaspora and nations where they were located to place the symbol on coins. The use of this symbol began in Armenia in 76 BC and continued through Yeshua’s ministry and on into the early Christian scriptures as a nomina sacra. As a result, the symbols ( +, X and ) were the “original” signs of the Messiah prophesied throughout scriptures. -

GOD IS GOD IS FEBRUARY 2017 Dear Saint Mary's family, We are off to a good start for 2017. As I write this letter we are just three full weeks in to the new year and already so much is happening. We have held our first Annual Meeting together, and the response has been very posi- tive. At that meeting we were able to make amendments to the church’s By-Laws that will allow us to go forward with a smaller eight person Vestry, all of whom were elected unanimously by the members present at the meeting. At our February Vestry meeting we will vote for a Junior Warden, Treasurer, and Secretary. With that accomplished we will begin the process of looking at all of the different aspects of the way we at Saint Mary’s currently do things. The end goal of that process is to identify and eliminate any barriers to growth that might not have been considered, and to find ways to improve upon many of the things we are already doing well. To that end, please begin to pray to see if God may be calling you to participate in any of the ministries that currently exist at Saint Mary’s. This is going to be a fun and exciting time for us to bond and grow together as we seek to strengthen the teams and look at the ways they function. Ushers and Greeters, the Flower and Altar Guilds, Eucharistic Ministers and Visi- tors… Perhaps you have a special talent or hobby that could be used to the Glory of God and you have never considered how. -

All rights reserved. 30.13 Only One John: The Apostle Who Wrote Five Books Most scholars who identify the apostle John with “the Beloved Disciple” are willing to grant that person a role (perhaps limited, perhaps pronounced) in the composition of the Gospel of John. However, the strong tendency in scholarship is to associate the three Johannine Epistles with another person named John and the book of Revelation with yet a third person who bore that name: New Testament Writing To Be Associated with Gospel of John John the apostle 1 John John the elder 2 John John the elder 3 John John the elder Revelation John the seer (otherwise unknown) But a strong minority of scholars contest this. No Need for a Distinct “John the Elder” First, the scholars challenge the contention of Eusebius (fourth- century historian) to the effect that John the apostle and John the elder were two different people. James-Translation and Notes Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1924 Introduction We have no ancient record of the length of this book, as we had in the cases of John, Paul, and Peter (but I suspect it was the most prolix of all the five), and we have fewer relics of the original text than for those. We have, however, a kind of abstract of the whole, written in Latin by Gregory of Tours: and there are Greek Encomia of the apostle which also help to the reconstruction of the story. The Martyrdom (as in other cases) exists separately, in many texts. Max Bonnet has established the relations of these to each other: and J. Flamion has made a most careful study of all the fragments. The best specimen of the original text which we have is a fragment preserved in a Vatican MS., tenth- eleventh centuries, containing discourses of Andrew shortly before his passion. There are also a few ancient quotations. These Acts may be the latest of the five leading apostolic romances. They belong to the third century: C. A. D. 260? It was formerly thought that the Acts of Andrew and Matthias (Matthew) were an episode of the original romance: but this view has ceased to be held. That legend is akin to the later Egyptian romances about the apostles of which an immense number were produced in the fifth and later centuries. An abstract of them will be given in due course. The epitome by Gregory of Tours is considered by Flamion to give on the whole the best idea of the contents of the original Acts. -
