Directly opposite facing the congregation is the wall with the new painting of the Apostles. The journey of faith we all make begins with the teaching of the Apostles, leads us through Baptism, toward altar and the Apostles guiding us by pulpit and altar to Christ himself pictured so clearly on the three-fold front of the Tabernacle. The lively multi-experiences of all those on the journey are reflected in the multi-colors of the pillars. W e are all connected by Christ with whom we journey, He the vine, we the branches, uniting us in faith, hope, and love connected to the Apostles and one another. O ur newly redone interior, rededicated on June 16, 2013, was the result of a collaboration between our many parishioners, the Intelligent Design Group (architect), the artistic designs of New Guild Studios, and the management and supervision of many craftsmen and technicians by Landau Building Company. I n March 2014, the Landau Building Company, in a category with four other projects, won a first place award from the Master Builders Association in the area of “Excellence in Craftsmanship by a General Contractor” for their work on the renovations at St. Ursula. A fter the extensive renovation to the church, our parish community began asking questions about the Apostles on the Sanctuary wall and wishing to know who they were. -

It portrays a naked bearded man whose arms are tied at the wrists by short strips to the transom of a T-shaped cross. An inscription in Greek on the obverse contains an invocation of the redeeming crucified Christ. -

BELLINGER Yale University N 1926 A MONEY-CHANGER IN THE PIRAEUS had a lot of 11 I scyphate bronze coins whose condition and hard green patina showed that they all belonged together. Since no others like them turned up in the vicinity they may be presumed to have constituted a small hoard. Where they had come from the dealer neither knew nor cared, so that we can hardly use them as proof of the circulation of these types in Greece. MEDIATION BETWEEN KING HENRY VIII OF ENGLAND AND POPE CLEMENT VII FOR A DIVORCE FROM CATHERINE OF ARAGON Bailey Acevedo Henry, the second son of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, was born on June 28, 1491.1 After his older brother Arthur’s death in 1502, Henry became heir to the English throne. When King Henry VII died in 1509, the then 18-year-old prince became King Henry VIII. Soon after, Henry gained papal dispensation from Rome to marry his brother’s widow, Catherine of Aragon.2 It is not known when Henry VIII decided that he had had enough of his wife. Despite its adverse beginnings, his union with Catherine of Aragon was an unusually good marriage.3 At the hunts, the jousts, the feasts and the religious observances that filled their time, the royal couple was always together.4 Henry’s extramarital affairs were, for a king, very few. Henry had two or three known affairs, one illegitimate offspring and another rumored.5 So far as such things can be established, it looks pretty certain that Henry loved his queen.6 In eight years of marriage, Catherine produced one daughter, Mary, five infants that did not survive, and suffered several miscarriages.7 But she was seven years older than he and, as women who suffered so many pregnancies did at that age, lost her physical attraction quite early.8 Moreover, Catherine’s failure to produce the litter of children demanded of queens even more than of wives in general preyed on her mind.9 1 BBC History, http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/people/henry_viii (last visited Nov. -

Heraldic Achievement of MOST REVEREND EDWARD M. In designing the shield—the central element in what is formally called the heraldic achievement—a Bishop has an opportunity to depict symbolically various aspects of his own life and heritage, and particular aspects of Catholic faith and devotion. The formal description of a coat of arms, known as the blazon, uses a technical language, derived from medieval French and English terms, which allows the appearance and position of each element in the achievement to be recorded precisely. The primary object or charge depicted on Bishop Deliman’s shield is a Cross. The particular design of the Cross with two crossbeams — known as the patriarchal Cross — the arms of which are slightly concave, is also known as the Cross of Saints Cyril and Methodius. It is the central charge in the coat of arms of Slovakia, and has been used as a symbol of the Slovak nation since before the year 1000. All of Bishop Deliman’s grandparents immigrated to the United States from Slovakia. Bishop Deliman’s baptismal patron, Saint Edward the Confessor, ruled as King of England from 1003 to 1066. His royal coat of arms is traditionally depicted as a Cross flory (that is, with its arms terminating in fleurs-de-lis) surrounded by five small birds called martlets. To recall Saint Edward, Bishop Deliman places the Slovak Cross on his shield amid five small charges as well. -

The Rapture: Left Behind or Left OUT of Scripture? The Rapture You may have heard the term, “The Rapture” from a Protestant friend or relative. Although the word itself doesn’t appear in Scripture, the idea that Christ will come back to rescue the “elect” from the coming period of persecutions against the Church is only about 185 years old. It is taken largely from a faulty interpretation of Scripture. The word “Rapture” is taken from the Latin Vulgate translation of 1 Thess. 4:16‐17, which says: "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord." The Koine Greek of 1 Thess. 4:17 uses the verb form ἁρπαγησόμεθα (harpagisometha) and is rendered as harpazō (ἁρπάζω). The Latin Vulgate translates the Greek as rapiemur from the Latin verb rapio. It’s interesting to note that Protestants, who usually reject the Latin Vulgate as a “perverted” translation, will randomly adopt some of its terminologies, such as “Rapio”. The Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Anglican Communion, Lutheranism and many Protestant Calvinist denominations do not hold to Rapture Theology. Rapture’s Roots Rapture theology finds its origin in the 1830’s, when an English Protestant minister named John Nelson Darby began teaching this new idea to his followers.
