Jesus, The Christ provided by The Father A message presented by Barry Ward to First Baptist Church of Diana, TX on August 27, 2017

Introduction Overview If Jesus is the promised Christ, provided by the Father, then the time for repentance and faith is now. Salvation is here! Goals/Aim/Key Takeaways to teach from John 7:25-36 1. Jesus is The Christ, provided by the Father 2. The time for repentance and faith is Now Outline to teach John 7:25-36 1. Context: Recap the previous passages to help us understand the context of John 7 2. Observe: John 7:25-31 a. Understand: the worldview of the crowd/audience that causes them to ask intriguing questions i. Appreciate: the term Christ, see this ‘One’ promised from the OT and show His fulfilment in the NT b. Think: How has John presented this Truth (Christ) w/r/t his Purpose statement 3. Observe: John 7:32-36 a. Recognize: the urgency of rightly judging Jesus as the Christ and believing Now 4. Interpret: Jump from Jesus’ and John’s historical context to our own and explain what this passage means for us today and how we can apply it in our daily lives

Read the John 7:25-36 Have the congregation stand to read God’s Word as a way to show reverence to Him

1. Context of John 7:25-36 Explain the importance of understanding the context of a passage if we want to correctly understand its meaning. The context is local to the passage, book, but is also global in terms of all Scripture. -analogy of letters in the mail i.e. water bill

o Jesus, in , heals a man who had been disabled for 38 years, and does this healing on the Sabbath. This sparks a huge controversy.

o This causes the Jewish leaders to want to kill Jesus (John 5:16-18) ▪ Synopsis of Exodus 31:12-17 (provides context to the reaction) “The observance of the Sabbath is exceptionally important because it is the sign of the that is being established between God and Israel (Exodus 31:12-17). Anyone desecrating the Sabbath is guilty of renouncing this special relationship with God; the consequence is death (Exodus 31:14-15)”1 • o is followed by the feast of unleavened bread in the Jewish calendar o After Passover Jesus provides bread (5K) and teaches that He is the Bread of Life • John 7 o Feast of Tabernacles/Booths ▪ ~6 months after Passover ▪ 1 of 3 feasts (Passover, Weeks -covenant, Tabernacles) on the calendar that would be commemorated by all Israel • The Old Covenant religious calendar is commanded in Leviticus 23 o The calendar was to remind Israel of what God had done in the past in order to anticipate what he will do in the future o Read Lev 23:39-43 39 “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. … 42 You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths,

43 that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: the Lord your God.” ▪ Commemorates God’s provision for the people after he saved them from Egypt and brought them to Sinai and then the promised land ▪ During this time of year, Israel would celebrate the harvest of Olives and Grapes, Oil and Wine • Think about John’s Progression in Chapters 5-7 (Passover, bread of life, Tabernacles) o Recap John 7:1-13 (Marc’s Sermon2 preached July 23, 2017) ▪ Just before Jesus & His brothers go to the feast ▪ Jewish leaders are seeking to kill Jesus (Opposition from Jerusalem is a common theme in John) ▪ Mixed crowd from all over Israel aren’t sure about Jesus’ true identity ▪ Jesus operates on a timeline provided by the Father o Recap John 7:14-24 (Joe’s Sermon3 preached August 13, 2017) ▪ Middle of the feast (day 3-4 of a 7 day feast) ▪ Jesus settles the argument over the legality of His healing of the disabled man on the Sabbath (John 5) once and for all (this argument will not resurface in John’s ) ▪ Jesus is the fulfillment of the redemptive purposes set forth in the old covenant, He is the fulfillment of the weekly reminder of a day to rest in the Lord • (the 4th command (honor the sabbath) is one of God’s terms for Israel to obey because he redeemed them with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm out of bondage and slavery in Egypt. Israel is commanded to rest in contrast to the forced labor as they built

the idols of Egypt, as Jesus is the fulfillment of the Sabbath we are to rest in him and cease our labors of idolatry or attempted works of salvation) ▪ Jesus teaches with authority from a syllabus provided by the Father ▪ Springboard: Jesus’ challenge is to judge his actions, character, and ultimately Hi identity with right judgement

2. Walk Through John 7:25-31 The text is naturally broken into three groupings; 25-27, 28-29, 30-31 John 7:25-31 Jesus, the Christ provided by the Father Verses 25-27 -The confusion of the crowd • Vs 25-27 “Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” o Continued confusion among Israel of Jesus Identity (John 7:12) o The fickle crowd appears schizophrenic or delusional, ‘Shut him up’ ▪ John 7:1 -Jesus would not go to (near Jerusalem) because the Jews (religious leaders) were seeking to kill him ▪ John 7:19-20 -Jesus mentions that folks are trying to kill him after He healed the disabled man, the crowd’s response is to call Jesus crazy and question his information o However, remember it is the group from Jerusalem that seeks to kill Jesus and the feast would have had people from all over Israel present so the statement in John 7:19-20 may be plausible, but here its ludicrous from those in Jerusalem o Coming off of Jesus’ challenge is to judge his actions, character, and identity with right judgement and noticing that the Jews aren’t silencing Jesus, the crowd suggests a conspiracy theory o With the conspiracy theory in mind the crowd then attempts to make a judgement whether Jesus could possibly be the Christ.

▪ The crowd then takes Malachi 3:1 out of context and misinterprets it: Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming,

says the LORD of hosts.” • The crowd focuses on the origin of the Lord in a temporal sense instead of the identity of who it is that is coming! o This unsure thought process of Jesus earthly origins continues throughout the week during this feast (John 7:41-43) o Is Jesus from , or , do they know? o They at least thought to go to the Scripture -do we? • Jesus himself taught that was the messenger that would prepare the way (Matt. 11:10; Mark 1:2; Luke 7:27), directly implying he is The Lord ▪ The crowd and Jewish leaders apparently are also misinformed about Jesus temporal birthplace and don’t recall the correct prophecy concerning the Christ’s earthly birthplace (John 7:42) :2 “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” • See Mathew 2:6; after a visit from the wise men, Herod calls the chief priests and scribes to tell him where the king of the Jews is to be born, they determine it is Bethlehem from Micah 5:2

Verses 28-29 -Jesus’ addresses the issue of His origins • Vs 28-29 “So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” o Jesus responds with an appeal to the obvious both in terms of His earthly and heavenly origins ▪ Make right judgement about who I am o Jesus teaches that he is subject to the will of the Father, whom He has come to represent (Heb 1:3a He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature) ▪ “He sent me” occurs 3x in John 7:25-36 o Jesus also teaches that those who have gathered as the people of Israel, God’s Covenant people, they don’t know God! ▪ Obviously, because they don’t recognize He is standing right in front of them!

Verses 30-31 -The two responses to Jesus teaching • Vs 30-31 “So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?” o Naturally Jesus’ response invokes anger from “God’s chosen people Israel” those that have the very oracles of God in the Scriptures o The second response is one of belief o Paul’s Gospel was an aroma of life to life and an aroma of death to death (2 Corinthians 2:15-16)

a. The Worldview that would ask about a Christ • In John 7:25-31 the crowd asks two intriguing questions 1. Can it be that this is the Christ? 2. When the Christ comes will He do more…?

o This is vitally important to understand John’s gospel due to John’s stated purpose (:30-31) o 1st Century Jews did not have a uniform set of eschatological beliefs ▪ Essentially there were different groups that anticipated different figures or offices to come/be fulfilled • Prophet, priestly , royal/kingly messiah i. What does the term Christ mean & Where is the concept from Define and provide an abbreviated holistic view of the Christ

o :41 Christ = Messiah (the preeminent anointed one, “chosen one”) o The term Christ embodies all three OT offices (Prophet, Priest, King) -where did this come from and How does the anointed one tie into the three- fold office of the Christ? -discuss eschatological implications ▪ Anointed: • Exodus 29, 30:22-33, 40:12-15 - was to make a specific oil to use in consecrating the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priesthood in order to set them apart for service to the Lord • 1 Samuel 16:1-13 -Samuel is commanded by the Lord to go and anoint a new king in Saul’s place. “13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him () in

the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward.” • The Lord’s anointed is one chosen and empowered by God in an office/role for the Lord • 1 Samuel 2:10 -Hannah’s prayer

“The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven.

The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;

he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” • Isaiah 42:1 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.” ▪ Christ three-fold offices: Take a non-exhaustive sample of OT passages4 • Gen 3:15 – a promised seed of the woman would crush the serpent (humanity) • Gen 12:1-3; 17:6,16-18; 22:16-18, -beginning with Abraham and through his lineage, God will bless the families of the earth, His offspring will be as numerous as the stars, include kings, and they will possess the gate of their enemies • Gen 49:8-12 -As the time of the patriarchs closes, Jacob blesses his sons and states that from the will come a lion like king who will receive worship from His people & rule eternally • Deut 18:15-22 -God promises that he will raise up a prophet like Moses that will speak authoritative words from God that the people will listen to and obey or die • 2 Sam 7:8-17 -God promises an eternally ruling king from the lineage of David • Psalm 110:4 speaks of the Davidic king as an eternal priest • Ezekiel 37:24 Speaking of the Christ who will bring about the new covenant, cleansing the sins of His people, putting His spirit within them, teaching them to obey, and ruling over them as a shepherding king

Fulfillment of being the anointed one and fulfilling the 3- fold office of the Christ • Anointed: Acts 10:38-40 -Peter speaking to Cornelius about the Gospel going to the Greeks/Gentiles “37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” • Prophet fulfilled in the NT: Acts 3:18-23 –Peter speaking to the crowd amazed by the healing of the disabled man (teaches the fulfillment of Deut 18) “18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’” • Priest fulfilled in the NT: Hebrews 5:5-6 -speaking of the appointing of a high priest to mediate between God and man (fulfillment of Psalm 110) “5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

“You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” Galatians 4:4-5 “4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” • King fulfilled in the NT: Luke 1:30-33 -Gabriel telling Mary of the coming child “30 And the said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” • Hebrews 1:1-3 -introduction to Jesus as the Christ (PP&K) “1Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”

Page 10 of 15 b. How has John presented Jesus as the Christ up to Chapter 7

• John 1 o Prophet ▪ The Word became flesh o King ▪ JtB is shown to be the fore-runner of the Christ (Mal 3:1) ▪ Nethaniel proclaims Jesus as the Son of God, the King of Israel o Priest ▪ “Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ John 1:41 -we have found the Christ (Nathaniel may not have originally thought about all 3 offices, but John is definitely teaching his audience and readers about all 3 offices) • John2 o Prophet ▪ Wedding feast at he manifests his glory o Priest ▪ Cleansing/purifies of the temple o King ▪ Jesus promises that when he is killed he will be raised up on the third day • o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ Jesus teaches about salvation, Jesus explains that he has descended from heaven, and that He must be lifted up so that those who look to him can be healed • o King ▪ Jesus heals the official’s son

o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ Woman at the well recognizes Jesus as the promised Christ to come • John 5 o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ Jesus heals the disabled man, teaches the Jews that He has the authority to bring life, and that life can only come through him • John 6 o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ Jesus feeds the 5,000; proclaims that the manna from heaven in the wilderness wanderings pointed to the fullness of life offered to man through Jesus, and finally Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ • John 7 o Prophet, Priest, & King ▪ Jesus is shown to be the Christ, the chosen one provided by the father, teaching with authority from the father, Jesus is the one through whom we will be made well as he is the fulfillment of the old covenant and its symbolism in the sabbath

Recap John 7:25-31 and Major Takeaways • Repeat the 2 primary takeaways in the sermons from Marc and Joe o Jesus operates on a timeline provided by the Father o Jesus teaches with authority from a syllabus provided by the Father • Repeat the primary takeaways from this section o Jesus is the Christ provided by the Father; We need him in all of these offices5: ▪ because of our ignorance we need his prophetical Office to reveal to us His Gospel

5 Summary of The 2nd London Confession of 1689; chapter 8 Christ the Mediator, section 10 Page 12 of 15

▪ because of our alienation from God, and the inadequacy of the best of our deeds, we need his Priestly office, to reconcile us, and present us acceptable unto God ▪ because of our love for darkness, and because we are incapable to return to God, and for our rescue, and security from our spiritual adversaries, we need his Kingly office, to convince, subdue, draw, uphold, deliver, and preserve us in his Heavenly Kingdom forever.

3. Walk Through John 7:32-36

John 7:32-36 The time for repentance and faith is now

Verses 32-36 -The contempt & confusion of the Jewish leaders • “The heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?” o Pharisees issue an arrest warrant (7:32) o Jesus has repeated 3x that he is ‘The Sent One’ yet the Jews and most of the crowd focus on where he is from or where he is going and not who he is! o Jesus responds with a stinging rebuke and John informs his readers/audience of the urgency of dealing with this Jesus ▪ There will come a time when you seek him, but it will be too late; then you won’t be where Jesus is • Flip side, for those who do repent and believe (Psalm 23 -dwell in the house of the lord forever)

4. Applications from the Passage

• Jesus is the only appointed means of salvation, the door of salvation will soon shut! o Sin in the : debt to be paid, nakedness, shame & guilt, dirty/unclean, heavy burden to carry, bondage/slavery, Eternal Death o Jesus is the only one who can: pay the debt of sin, cover our nakedness, remove our shame and guilt, cleanse us from our filth/uncleanness, carry our heavy burden, free us from bondage and slavery to sin, and provide eternal Life, because he is our Christ and our Life! • If we reject God’s appointed means of salvation then we are like those who ridiculed Noah as he built the ark and then drowned as judgment came o Judgement is coming o IF TIME Read Hebrews 3:7-19 ▪ Disobedient to the Lord because they did not believe (no Faith)!

Using 2 Timothy 3:16-17 as the guide for what Scripture is for, ask the question how can we apply the passage of Scripture that has been presented today.

• 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. o All are forms of discipleship/evangelism ▪ Teaching what is right • Jesus is the Christ, the means of salvation provided by the Father, the time of salvation is now, but judgement will come ▪ Rebuking what is wrong & Correcting so that it gets right • Those in error, who hold beliefs that conflict with Scripture, or who teach alternate means of salvation ▪ Training in righteousness so that we live out right beliefs • Submit to the terms of our Prophet, Priest, and King • Hebrews 3 is a good reminder disobedient = unbelief Page 14 of 15
