John 7

John 7:1-5 say, “After these things was walking in , For He was unwilling to walk in because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” For not even His brothers were believing in Him.” The Feast of Booths was the celebration festival that lasted for ______days to thank the Lord for the completion of the year’s ______and to thank Him for His ______of their needs during the forty years of wandering in the desert during the time of . From these verses, Jesus’ half-brothers very sarcastically told Him to go to Judea to make known His miracles ______. Of course, this is where the Jews were waiting for Him to desire to murder Him. Here and in other areas of the , serious ______and even ______came from Jesus’ own blood family. This all changed following Jesus’ resurrection from the dead! John 7:6-10 say, “So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.” Jesus’ response to His half-brothers was a repudiation of their ______that He could possibly be the . It seems at this time, Jesus’ half-brothers wanted little to nothing to do with Him, because His testimony of the hearts of the people was that they were ______. As a result, Jesus was ______by those who did not want to hear this indictment of their lives before God and their need for a Savior. After His half-brothers had left for the feast, Jesus also went “behind the scenes” at the beginning. John 7:11-14 say, “So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?” There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.” Everyone was looking for Jesus at the Feast of Booths. Some were willing to give Him the benefit of the doubt while others were firmly opposed to Him. For three days Jesus did not make Himself known during the feast. It was not until the ______day (the midst of the feast) that Jesus made Himself known by going to the temple and ______publicly. John 7:15-18 say, “The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?” So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” Jesus had never been ______by a known and approved Jewish rabbi. The charge against Him of not having been “educated” (by a rabbi) was also levied against the disciples (see Acts 4:13) after the Lord had healed a crippled man through the words of Peter. Jesus’ “Teacher” was His ______. Again and again, Jesus always spoke of His Father’s ______, giving people the opportunity to believe in Him! John 7:19-24 say, “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel. “For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. “If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” The Jews (especially the religious leaders among them), were very ______of Jesus, because the common worshipper was following Him and not them. This jealousy led to intense ______with the desire for ______. This is Genesis 4 enacted again as Cain murdered his brother Abel (see Genesis 4:1-9). The context here was when Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath day. Jesus called out their ______of permitting circumcision on the Sabbath day, but not the healing of someone in need. Judgment of any kind was to be made using godly discernment about righteous or unrighteous acts, and not upon someone’s appearance or condition (the man needing healing on the Sabbath day). John 7:25-30 say, “So some of the people of were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? “Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they? “However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.” Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent me is true, whom you do not know. “I know Him, because I am from Him, and he sent Me.” So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.” From these verses came confusion and denials of Jesus’ claim about His ______with His Father. Though Jesus was speaking publicly in the temple, ______of the people said that Jesus did not come from heaven, as the Messiah would—but that He was only from the earth—from —from Joseph’s household. But Jesus ______this by saying that His former healings and miracles of mercy should have convinced them that He was His Father’s Messiah for the people of the world. John 7:31-36 say, “But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “When the Christ comes. He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?” The heard the crowd mutter these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him. Therefore Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me. “You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” The Jews then said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? “What is this statement that He said, “You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come?” From these verses, ______people did believe in Jesus because of His signs, which infuriated the Pharisees, who sent their officers to seize Him. But Jesus, aware of their plans, spoke that He would not be seized ______the time of His Father’s will. He would not be seen as He would go to His Father ______His death and resurrection from the dead. The Jews did not understand at all, thinking that Jesus would leave Jerusalem and attempt to convert the pagan Greeks (which actually was done by the Apostle Paul). John 7:37-39 say, “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” On the ______and last day of the Feast of Booths, Jesus cried out for people to believe in Him and ______“rivers of living water” from Him in their innermost being (their soul!). From John 7:39, the God the Holy Spirit is referenced. His being received by believers would speak to His coming in His ______after Jesus would be glorified at His Father’s right hand after His ascension. This would happen on the day of ______, as testified to from the book of Acts 2. Until then, from both the Old and New Testaments, the Holy Spirit was poured out (______but not fully) with divine purpose upon God’s prophets and others for His will to be made known and accomplished (see 2 Peter 1:16-21). John 7:40-44 say, “Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? “Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of , and from , the village where David was?” So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.” From these verses comes the great need for believers today to ______the prophecies from the as they relate to our Lord Jesus Christ’s commission as God’s Anointed One. The people here had read some things about God’s Messiah, but they could not put it all ______, leading to division and the threat of hostility. But Jesus would not be “seized” until His Father’s appointed time. John 7:45-49 say, “The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you? “No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? “But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” Perhaps like the Roman centurion overseeing Jesus’ crucifixion, the officers sent to arrest Jesus were in ______of Jesus’ teachings, having open hearts to the Lord’s offer to be saved! Again, this infuriated the chief priests and the Pharisees, calling the officers as those being ______by Jesus and the crowd called “______” as being accused of being ignorant of the Law of Moses. These hateful words were spoken because the officers had not brought Jesus to them. John 7:50-53 say, “ (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, “Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” They answered him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” Everyone went to his home.” Nicodemus finally ______with courage, being convicted by the Lord about the utter hate and hypocrisy in twisting the Law of Moses into irrelevance to suit their hostility toward Jesus. Nicodemus was rebuked for breaking with the who had together ______the claims of Jesus to be the long- awaited Messiah for all people.
