JETS 54.3 (September 2011) 527–45 THE NAKED RUNAWAY AND THE ENROBED REPORTER OF MARK 14 AND 16: WHAT IS THE AUTHOR DOING WITH WHAT HE IS SAYING? !"#!$!% &'#'()**!* There is no question that Mark 14:51–52 is a major crux of Mark’s Gos- pel—the account of a “young man” +eeing naked from the scene as Jesus was arrested. 1 These verses are “a total enigma,” concluded Morna Hooker. A “bizarre episode,” said Eugene Boring. Francis Moloney called it a “strange passage.” “Confusing” and “unclear,” labeled Robert Stein. “[M]akes no sense as an actual incident,” claimed Robin Scroggs and Kent Gro,. “Whimsical,” declared John Knox. 2 This degree of interpretive chaos has resulted in an inordinate amount of speculation, inversely proportional to the evangelist’s reticence, as many a scholar and preacher has exercised upon this crux his or her own expository creativity. The reason for these hermeneutical acrobat- ics is obvious: if 14:51–52 is erased from the account—which apparently is what Matthew and Luke did in their respective Gospels (Matt 26:56–57; Luke 22:54)—what is left actually makes for a seamless reading of a coherent story. 3 But, as far as scholarship can tell us, those two verses remain in the canonical version and -nal form of the Gospel of Mark; and so, preachers have to make some sense of this perplexing text situated in this locus in Mark’s passion. But there are seven beatitudes found in the book of Revelation that are very encouraging as well. In this article, we want to take a brief look at the beatitudes found in the book of Revelation. 1. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy...” (Revelation 1:3). The prophecy considered by John is the content of the book of Revelation. The fact is, however, the one who regularly reads and applies any portion of God’s word to his life is going to be blessed. The Bible is the greatest book ever written. While it was penned by men, those men were inspired and thus the Bible is an inspired book (2 Timothy 3:16). That means that every word in the Bible is there because God so willed it to be so (1 Corinthians 2:13). The Bible, then, reveals the mind of God. Knowing God’s mind can only be profitable, that is, as long as we determine to make use of what we know of God’s mind to our lives. This is why we are encouraged so often to study God’s word and grow in knowledge (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 3:18). -

Gospel of Mark Study Guide Biblical scholars mostly believe that the Gospel of Mark to be the first of the four Gospels written and is the shortest of the four Gospels, however the precise date of when it was written is not definitely known, but thought to be around 60-75 CE. Scholars generally agree that it was written for a Roman (Latin) audience as evidenced by his use of Latin terms such as centurio, quadrans, flagellare, speculator, census, sextarius, and praetorium. This idea of writing to a Roman reader is based on the thinking that to the hard working and accomplishment-oriented Romans, Mark emphasizes Jesus as God’s servant as a Roman reader would relate better to the pedigree of a servant. While Mark was not one of the twelve original disciples, Church tradition has that much of the Gospel of Mark is taken from his time as a disciple and scribe of the Apostle Peter. This is based on several things: 1. His narrative is direct and simple with many vivid touches which have the feel of an eyewitness. 2. In the letters of Peter he refers to Mark as, “Mark, my son.” (1 Peter 5:13) and indicates that Mark was with him. 3. Peter spoke Aramaic and Mark uses quite a few Aramaic phrases like, Boanerges, Talitha Cumi, Korban and Ephphatha. 4. St Clement of Alexandria in his letter to Theodore (circa 175-215 CE) writes as much; As for Mark, then, during Peter's stay in Rome he wrote an account of the Lord's doings, not, however, declaring all of them, nor yet hinting at the secret ones, but selecting what he thought most useful for increasing the faith of those who were being instructed. -

IMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH SERIES: JOHN (GOSPEL OF TRUTH) LESSON: ON HAVING THE LIGHT OF LIFE JOHN 8:12-20 MAY 2, 2021 MAIN POINT Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. JOHN CONTEXT Perhaps it is helpful to point out that we are skipping John 7:53-8:11 in our Sunday school curriculum. In fact, many of your Bible’s might have a footnote or parenthetical mark explaining that John 7:53-8:11 is a disputed passage for its authenticity. We won’t get into the reasons in this section of the lesson, but I have included in the commentary section a brief excerpt from an article by John Piper for reasons why scholars doubt its authenticity. Despite that we are skipping over John 7:53-8:11, John 8:12-20 still fits nicely into the context of the end of John 7. In the chapter, Jesus is in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles or otherwise called, the Feast of Booths. On the final day of the feast, Jesus stood up and declared, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” (7:37-38). Jesus’ use of the water analogy is a fitting one because the Feast of Tabernacles celebrated in part the event of Moses striking the rock and water coming forth. Similarly, Jesus in John 8:12 will refer to himself as the light of the world. -

Matthew 26-28: The Death and Resurrection of Jesus The final three chapters of Matthew’s gospel follow Mark’s lead in telling of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. At each stage Matthew adds to Mark’s story material that addresses concerns of his community. The overall story will be familiar to most readers. We shall focus on the features that are distinctive of Matthew’s version, while keeping the historical situation of Jesus’ condemnation in view. Last Supper, Gethsemane, Arrest and Trial (26:1–75) The story of Jesus’ last day begins with the plot of the priestly leadership to do away with Jesus (26:1–5). As in Mark 14:1-2 they are portrayed as acting with caution, fearing that an execution on the feast of Passover would upset the people (v 5). Like other early Christians, Matthew held the priestly leadership responsible for Jesus’ death and makes a special effort to show that Pilate was a reluctant participant. Matthew’s apologetic concerns probably color this aspect of the narrative. While there was close collaboration between the Jewish priestly elite and the officials of the empire like Pilate, the punishment meted out to Jesus was a distinctly Roman one. His activity, particularly in the Temple when he arrived in Jerusalem, however he understood it, was no doubt perceived as a threat to the political order and it was for such seditious activity that he was executed. Mark (14:3–9) and John (12:1–8) as well as Matthew (26:6–13) report a dramatic story of the anointing of Jesus by a repentant sinful woman, which Jesus interprets as a preparation for his burial (v.
