The UK’s decision to divorce from the European Union has brought significant uncertainty for the country both in domestic and foreign policy and has spurred a national identity crisis across the United Kingdom. The Brexit negotiations themselves, and the consequences of them, put tremendous pressure on already strained international relationships between the UK and other European countries, most notably their geographic neighbour: the Republic of Ireland. The Anglo-Irish relationship is characterized by centuries of mutual antagonism and the development of Irish national consciousness, which ultimately resulted in the establishment of an autonomous Irish free state in 1922. -

The story of the Scotsmen who swarmed across the nar- row body of water which separates Scotland from Ireland, in the seventeenth century, and who came to America in the eighteenth century, in large numbers, is of perennial inter- est. For hundreds of years before the beginning of the seventeenth centurj' the Scot had been going forth con- tinually over Europe in search of adventure and gain. A!IS a rule, says one who knows him \yell, " he turned his steps where fighting was to be had, and the pay for killing was reasonably good." ^ The English wars had made his coun- trymen poor, but they had also made them a nation of soldiers. Remember the "Scotch Archers" and the "Scotch (juardsmen " of France, and the delightful story of Quentin Durward, by Sir Walter Scott. Call to mind the " Scots Brigade," which dealt such hard blows in the contest in Holland with the splendid Spanish infantry which Parma and Spinola led, and recall the pikemen of the great Gustavus. Despite similar economic conditions, they were not treated as blacks legally, politically, or culturally.1 That is not to say that they escaped discrimination, nor does it minimize their suffering in the Great Famine of the s as they fled from death and disease. Rather, this essay points out that the respective sufferings—and tri- umphs—of nineteenth-century Irish Americans and African Amer- icans were different. From their arrival in the United States, Irish Americans suffered various forms of cultural prejudices that were expressed in caricature representations, but they were protected from the legal discrimination facing African Americans. Whiteness did not automatically confer freedom from repression and discrim- ination, nor did repression and discrimination automatically confer a designation of nonwhiteness or blackness. *The research for this project was funded by the generosity of the Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon. Violence and the Sacred in Northern Ireland
VIOLENCE AND THE SACRED IN NORTHERN IRELAND Duncan Morrow University of Ulster at Jordanstown For 25 years Northern Ireland has been a society characterized not so much by violence as by an endemic fear of violence. At a purely statistical level the risk of death as a result of political violence in Belfast was always between three and ten times less than the risk of murder in major cities of the United States. Likewise, the risk of death as the result of traffic accidents in Northern Ireland has been, on average, twice as high as the risk of death by political killing (Belfast Telegraph, 23 January 1994). Nevertheless, the tidal flow of fear about political violence, sometimes higher and sometimes lower but always present, has been the consistent fundamental backdrop to public, and often private, life. This preeminence of fear is triggered by past and present circumstances and is projected onto the vision of the future. The experience that disorder is ever close at hand has resulted in an endemic insecurity which gives rise to the increasingly conscious desire for a new order, for scapegoats and for resolution. For a considerable period of time, Northern Ireland has actively sought and made scapegoats but such actions have been ineffective in bringing about the desired resolution to the crisis. They have led instead to a continuous mimetic crisis of both temporal and spatial dimensions. To have lived in Northern Ireland is to have lived in that unresolved crisis. Liberal democracy has provided the universal transcendence of Northern Ireland's political models. Northern Ireland is physically and spiritually close to the heartland of liberal democracy: it is geographically bound by Britain and Ireland, economically linked to Western Europe, and historically tied to emigration to the United States, Canada, and the South Pacific. -

Church in Wales Review July 2012 The September 2010 meeting of the Governing Body was notable for the number of contributions from members with a common message: “The Church in Wales cannot go on doing the same things in the same way; some things need to change and we are open to – and indeed encourage – that possibility”. The Standing Committee and Bench of Bishops responded to this call by appointing an external review of the Church, with particular reference to its structures and use of resources, to increase the effectiveness of the Church’s ministry and witness. The Review Group’s members are prominent thinkers with a blend of experience in dealing with matters ecclesiastical and organisational: Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford; Professor Charles Handy, the eminent writer and adviser on business and organisational theory (and son of a Church of Ireland archdeacon); and Professor Patricia Peattie, former Convenor of the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Standing Committee and the first chairwoman of the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The aim was to commission a review that could move quickly to gather and assimilate information about the state of the Church in Wales, then provide independent advice on how the Church might reshape itself to be more effective in the twenty-first century. Given the extent of its members’ other commitments, the Review Group has pursued its task with extraordinary vigour and dedication. The Group determined its own approach and programme. It has visited every diocese in Wales, meeting with the Bishop and Diocesan team in each and holding an open meeting for Church members to express their views. -

As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity. -
The Church of Ireland Response to the Draft Covenant
THE CHURCH OF IRELAND RESPONSE TO THE DRAFT ANGLICAN COVENANT PART ONE INTRODUCTION This Church of Ireland response to the Anglican Draft Covenant was prepared by a small drafting group comprised of those who were, or had been, elected members of ACC and those who had been much involved in ecumenical affairs on behalf of the Church of Ireland. The preliminary discussion centred on whether the idea of a Covenant was to be supported, or whether something much simpler was required, such as a common statement. Two previous Church of Ireland responses within the Windsor process had shown somewhat different emphases in relation to this issue. However it soon emerged that there was within the drafting group, a general willingness to support the Covenant concept. The drafting group decided that rather than make a line by line response to the Draft Covenant, it would use it as a basis for the construction of what it was felt would be an acceptable form of Covenant. A new drafting for a Covenant was then discussed at a full meeting of the drafting group and the Bishops of the Church of Ireland. It received a very positive response with a few minor suggestions which were easily incorporated. The Standing Committee of the General Synod, representative of the clergy and laity of every diocese then passed the response. The thinking behind the Church of Ireland re-drafting could be listed as threefold: 1. A Covenant should express very clearly the themes of Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence within the Body of Christ; 2. A Covenant should aim, insofar as possible, to be inclusive; 3. -

The Governance and Organisation of the Church of Ireland WHO ARE WE? The Church of Ireland belongs to the world- wide church known as the Anglican Communion. The Anglican church across the world has over 80 million members in over 160 countries. The Church of Ireland is an Episcopal church, which means that it is governed by a body of bishops. In the USA the Anglican church is known as the Episcopal Church. WHERE DID WE COME FROM? The Church of Ireland is so named as it covers the whole island of Ireland and until 1870 was the established church in Ireland - established by an act of parliament. As such it had a privileged position and was supported and financed by every citizen in the land irrespective of their religious affiliation. In 1870 the Church was DISESTABLISHED and since then has been fully independent of status and state support. WHO’S THE BOSS? The Most Rev. A.E.T. Harper, OBE, BA Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland The Archbishop of Armagh - currently The Most Reverend A.E.T. Harper, O.B.E., B.A. - is the head of the Church of Ireland and is known as the Primate of All Ireland. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh Armagh is the ecclesiastical (or church) capital of Ireland ever since St Patrick set up his headquarters there in the fifth century. Thus the Cathedral there is dedicated to St Patrick. 1 How is the Church organised? The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan
THE THRENODIA HIBERNO- CATHOLICA (1659) AND THE IRISH FRANCISCAN COMMUNITY IN THE TYROL By Nienke Tjoelker This article focuses on Maurice Conry’s Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica (1659) and the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol. Conry's work is an example of many Latin works written by Irish exiled clergy on the Continent in the mid-seventeenth century. In this contribution, after outlining the authorial issues, a summary of the contents of the Threnodia is given and then placed in the context of the expatriate clerical Irish of the 1650s. The piece concludes with a section on contemporary reactions to itinerant Irish friars, mainly from within mendicant circles. The Threnodia Hiberno-Catholica, sive Planctus Universalis Totius Cleri et Populi Regni Hiberniae was published under the pseudonym of F. M. Mori- sonus, ordinis observantiae, S. Theologiae Lector, Praefatae Crudelitatis testis ocularis in Innsbruck, 1659. Although often mentioned by historians as an important source for our knowledge of the atrocities of Cromwell against the Irish in the 1650s, little research has been done into this work since Brendan Jennings published his edition of the work in 1947 with a short introduction.1 In this article, I will address the question of why this book was published in Innsbruck, and not in any of the more famous Irish centres on the conti- nent, such as Prague, Paris, or Louvain. The historical context of the Irish Franciscan community in the Tyrol (modern day Tirol in Austria, and Südti- rol and Trentino in Italy) seems to me a gap in the existing research on Irish exile communities on the continent. -
