Compassion and courage Australian doctors and dentists in the Great War Medical History Museum, University of Melbourne War has long brought about great change and discovery in medicine and dentistry, due mainly to necessity and the urgency and severity of the injuries, disease and other hardships confronting patients and practitioners. Much of this innovation has taken place in the field, in makeshift hospitals, under conditions of poor Compassion hygiene and with inadequate equipment and supplies. During World War I, servicemen lived in appalling conditions in the trenches and were and subjected to the effects of horrific new weapons courage such as mustard gas. Doctors and dentists fought a courageous battle against the havoc caused by AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS AND DENTISTS war wounds, poor sanitation and disease. Here, History is made tangible through the personal effects on display, turning into strong emotion when presented with all those Australian and British soldiers who perished on Artois soil. A heavy machine gun, a tank turret, ripped open gas cylinders. These are what Jean Letaille happened upon Bullecourt: Arras fine day, as he Bullecourt: Arras in his fields. It is hard to imagine the scene, so Bullecourt: Arras must it have seemed. What ensued was even more so. Today, they all find a home under the roof of his own barn, now a museum. The only source of natural light is Bullecourt: Arras sunlight that filters through holes in an enormous door, which one might describe as… riddled with bullets. It is the golden voice of Bullecourt: Arras Letaille himself that accompanies the visitor in this emotionally charged place. An accumulation of shells, horse shoes, barbed wire, rifles and everything making up the kit of a soldier of the First World War. The staging is brutal. All around, display cases filled with personal effects, all neatly arranged like toy soldiers, stand in stark contrast to the disarray Bullecourt: Arras confusion of the central pit. But perhaps this re-enacts the two battles of Bullecourt which, in the spring ofleft 17, dead from among the Australian and British ranks? The Letaille museum is an enduring allegory: it explains by showing. -

ELEMENTS OF RECOVERY An Inventory of Upslope Sources of Sedimentation in the Mattole River Watershed with Rehabilitation Prescriptions and Additional Information for Erosion Control Prioritization Prepared for the California Department of Fish and Game by the Mattole Restoration Council P.O. Box 160 Petrolia, CA 95558 December 1989 ELEMENTS OF RECOVERY Erosion is as common an aspect of life in the Coast Range as Pacific sunsets. As the mountains rise up out of the soft ocean bottom, a tenuous and fluid equilibrium is established -- most of each year's uplift is washed or shaken back into the sea. An inch of soil which took a hundred years to build can wash away in a single storm unless held in place by grasses, shrubs, and trees. The streams and rivers are conduits for all this material on its way downhill. Yet under conditions of equilibrium, no more sediment enters the stream than can be easily stored or quickly transported through the system. The Mattole in prehis- toric times was able to move thousands of yards of sediment each year and still be called "clear water," the meaning of the word Mattole in the native tongue. To give an idea of how much ma- terial is moving through the fluvial system, one geologist has estimated that Kings Peak would be 40,000 feet high were it not for this "background" erosion. It doesn't take much to create a disturbance in such a deli- cately balanced system. The erosive power of water increases in proportion to the square of its volume. A midslope road poorly placed, or built on the cheap, or lazily maintained, or aban- doned, can divert large volumes of water from one drainage to another, or onto a slope unarmored by large rock or tree roots. -

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating' adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding o f the dissertation. -
