This might include parish, local and district councils, conservation professionals, contractors, statutory bodies, volunteer groups or private owners. Although the guidance covers the setting of war memorials, more detailed information on landscape issues can be found in the War Memorials Trust publication Conservation and Management of War Memorial Landscapes (2012). When it refers to ‘custodians’, the document is addressing anyone who has taken on formal responsibility for a war memorial, whether or not they are its legal owner. The guidance describes current best practice on the understanding, assessment, planning and implementation of conservation work to memorials as well as their ongoing maintenance and protection. It also outlines the legal frameworks and statutory duties that relate to their ownership and care. In addition to their continuing commemorative role, many war memorials are of significant architectural, historic or artistic quality and have become key parts of the historic environment; it is therefore important that their physical condition should be safeguarded for the benefit of future generations as well as our own. Most war memorials have communal sensitivities; their condition and the legibility of their inscriptions will thus be seen by some people as a direct measure of the respect being shown to those commemorated.     World War One memorials in the City of Melbourne by Dr Michael Cathcart For five terrible years following 1914, boys from all over Australia – the brave, the nervous, the brilliant and the dull of wit – marched off to fight in a European conflict. Some expected a glorious adventure – a noble battle against a demonic foe. Others enlisted because the ‘King’s shilling’ was too shiny a coin to resist. And some went, sick with fear, because soldiering was expected of them. What they experienced was slaughter, a relentless chain of battles in which men were ripped apart by the new-fangled machines of death. When the tireless guns finally fell silent on 11 November 1918, they left over 37 million corpses – civilian and military – on the battle fields of Europe. The human cost to Australia was beyond comprehension. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men had enlisted. Over 60,000 were killed. Another 156,000 were wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. How was this young nation to make sense of so much suffering? Through the 1920s and 30s, communities, individuals and organisations erected monuments to the dead. These cenotaphs and statues were like so many Stations of the Cross – places for stillness and reflection – where stories of healing and hope could be told in place of a great horror which few could name. Here, the men who had been massacred were invested with honour and dignity. They were elevated as ‘the fallen’; the men who made ‘the ultimate sacrifice’; ‘the glorious dead’. In the monuments which Australians erected, no one story of the war dominates to the exclusion of all others.

    Visual and Written Discourses of British Commemorative War Monuments N. Gillian Abousnnouga Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Cardiff University This thesis is submitted to Cardiff University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2012 Abstract This thesis analyses commemorative war monuments using a social semiotic approach to understand how they communicate as three-dimensional objects, considering their design alongside contextual information. Taking a social semiotic approach to the study of commemorative war monuments, it responds to calls by historians for innovative ways to study war commemoration by providing an approach that offers both specific analysis of the objects and attends to matters of design. This thesis also provides a contribution to the work in Critical Discourse Analysis on discourses of war through its analysis of the way that certain dominant discourses of war are realised, maintained and legitimised; not just through political speeches and news texts, but visually and materially through these objects that appear in cities, towns and villages across Britain. Following in the relatively recent tradition of multimodal analysis, the thesis draws on the ideas of Kress & van Leeuwen, adapting and extending their theories to the analysis of typical examples of post-First World War British commemorative war monuments. The analysis reveals that sign makers rejected modern forms, relying on classical styles of representation to realise meanings which serve to recontextualize the brutality of war. These monuments contain powerful discourses of denial that work to promote the sacrifice of life by creating a strong, ethnically homogenous and consentient national group that acts uniformly to carry out the will of the nation-state.

Insignificant Others; images of barbarians on military art from Roman Britain by lain Ferris From Roman Britain come two distinct groups of commemorative stones portraying soldiers of the Roman army in conflict with, or in association with, barbarians. These groups comprise a well-defined series of auxiliary cavalry tombstones of the First and Second centuries, and certain of the so-called legionary distance slabs from the Antonine Wall . Both sets of stones are most usually discussed in terms of their epigraphic content and significance or, in the case of the auxiliary tombstones, of their often accurate depiction of military equipment and accoutrements. The central themes portrayed on all these stones are linked to Ideas of conflict.
