It Is Now a Number of Years Since the Bowman Sculpture Gallery Has Held
It is now a number of years since the Bowman Sculpture Gallery has held an exhibition solely focused on The New School of British Sculpture and it is a pleasure to see the Gallery again showing extensive examples of the leading artists involved. The New British School, also referred to as the New Sculpture, followed a period when the Neo Classicism of such sculptors as Canova, Thorvaldsen and Gibson was regarded as the acme of their art and they featured in many of the great Houses of the time. Towards the end of the 19th Century the expanding middle class, who had a growing interest in the Arts, created a demand for smaller and more domestic sculpture began. At the same time painters such as Lord Leighton, who sculpted Athlete Wrestling with a Python and The Sluggard, and George Frederick Watts, who produced the great monument Physical Energy, were bringing ‘colour’ into the subject by varied patination and their treatment of shape. This movement was undoubtedly fuelled by a reaction against what was seen to be the severity of the Neo Classicists but the principal initiators of this ‘New’, most attractive and impressive period of British Sculpture, were Jules Dalou who taught at The South Kensington School of Art, for eight years from 1871, his friend Édouard Lantéri, who taught at The National Art Training College (later renamed The Royal College of Art) and Alfred Stevens. The result was, as one critic has said, ‘a perfect synthesis of the spiritual and the sensual’. This approach to the subject was adopted by the ‘New’ sculptors. -

By the time you read this foreword there will be a new President elected by secret ballot in the General Assembly room of Burlington House. So, it seems appropriate now to reflect more widely beyond the normal hori- zon of the Annual Report. Our founders in 1768 comprised some of the greatest figures of the British Enlightenment, King George III, Reynolds, West and Chambers, supported and advised by a wider circle of thinkers and intellectuals such as Edmund Burke and Samuel Johnson. It is no exaggeration to suggest that their original inten- tions for what the Academy should be are closer to realisation than ever before. They proposed a school, an exhibition and a membership. -

‘Abstract’ portraits A learning resource featuring works from the National Portrait Gallery Collection, one of a series focusing on particular artists or themes which has changed the way we think about the art of portraiture. A variety of themes group different types of portraits that could be termed ‘abstract’. The portraits selected in this resource are all in the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery. The resource is aimed primarily at teachers of pupils studying GCSE and A level art. Those studying art history may also find the images, concepts and discussions of relevance to their study. The content aims to give teachers information on the significance and stories of the sitter and artist, the purpose of the image and its impact at the time, and to examine connections between those sitters, artists and their images. The general enquiry questions together with themes and ideas for further discussion between teachers and students are designed to encourage ways to research, develop and record ideas and personal responses. Finally, there are web links for additional research. This resource complements and supports the learning programmes developed by the National Portrait Gallery. ‘Abstract’ portraits in context Can men and women be represented in ‘abstract ways’? Is the essential function of a portrait that it communicates what the sitter looks like and that it can be used for identity purposes? If this factor is subverted and the portrait no longer has this function, can it be true to the genre? Recognisable features from distinctive and famous faces can help make an ‘abstract’ portrait look more realistic and believable. -

Shared narratives and recognised images through which the deeper meaning of life could be explored. This has gone. “The disassociation between art and faith is not written in stone but is not easy to overcome”. Formidable obstacles: of style-how to avoid pastiche, images that have gone stale-overwhelming plurality of styles, so artist has to choose-forced to choose a private language, and so lose some of the audience. [1] David Jones, particularly aware of this. Human beings are essentially sign makers. Most obviously we give someone a bunch of flowers or a kiss as a sign. So what are works of art a sign of? Here we come across the great crisis with which Jones wrestled both in his writing and his art. For he believed, and he said this view was shared by his contemporaries in the 1930’s, that the 19th century experienced what he called “The Break”.[2] By this he meant two things. First, the dominant cultural and religious ideology that had unified Europe for more than a 1000 years no longer existed. All that was left were fragmentary individual visions. Secondly, the world is now dominated by technology, so that the arts seem to be marginalised. They are no use in such a society, and their previous role as signs no longer has any widespread public resonance. -
Modernist Sculpture and the Maternal Body
REVIEWS (Devangana Desai) – Guha-Thakurta relegates important debates and acknowl- edgements to rather dismissive footnotes. Considering that most of Monuments, Objects, Histories is republished material, the structure of the book needs to be called into question. Such a project demands a far weightier introduction than the nine-page offering the reader encounters here or, alternatively, the addition of a concluding chapter. This could have usefully taken the place of the chapter on ‘Art History and Nationalism in Bengal’, which covers very similar ground to the author’s first monograph and is the oldest of the articles. Despite these minor flaws, and the predictable temporal linearity of the various sections (colonial-national-postcolonial), the monograph deals effectively with important cultural, political and methodological issues, and should be covered by those teaching and learning in the ‘new humanities’.
