A heavy machine gun, a tank turret, ripped open gas cylinders. These are what Jean Letaille happened upon Bullecourt: Arras fine day, as he Bullecourt: Arras in his fields. It is hard to imagine the scene, so Bullecourt: Arras must it have seemed. What ensued was even more so. Today, they all find a home under the roof of his own barn, now a museum. The only source of natural light is Bullecourt: Arras sunlight that filters through holes in an enormous door, which one might describe as… riddled with bullets. It is the golden voice of Bullecourt: Arras Letaille himself that accompanies the visitor in this emotionally charged place. An accumulation of shells, horse shoes, barbed wire, rifles and everything making up the kit of a soldier of the First World War. The staging is brutal. All around, display cases filled with personal effects, all neatly arranged like toy soldiers, stand in stark contrast to the disarray Bullecourt: Arras confusion of the central pit. But perhaps this re-enacts the two battles of Bullecourt which, in the spring ofleft 17, dead from among the Australian and British ranks? The Letaille museum is an enduring allegory: it explains by showing. -

Master of Arts (History), May 2012, 130 pp., references, 86. The Portuguese Expeditionary Force fought in the trenches of northern France from April 1917 to April 1918. On 9 April 1918 the sledgehammer blow of Operation Georgette fell upon the exhausted Portuguese troops. British accounts of the Portuguese Corps’ participation in combat on the Western Front are terse. Many are dismissive. In fact, Portuguese units experienced heavy combat and successfully held their ground against all attacks. Regarding Georgette, the standard British narrative holds that most of the Portuguese soldiers threw their weapons aside and ran. The account is incontrovertibly false. Most of the Portuguese combat troops held their ground against the German assault. This thesis details the history of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force. The History/Literature Problem in First World War Studies Nicholas Milne-Walasek Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a doctoral degree in English Literature Department of English Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Nicholas Milne-Walasek, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 ii ABSTRACT In a cultural context, the First World War has come to occupy an unusual existential point half- way between history and art. Modris Eksteins has described it as being “more a matter of art than of history;” Samuel Hynes calls it “a gap in history;” Paul Fussell has exclaimed “Oh what a literary war!” and placed it outside of the bounds of conventional history. The primary artistic mode through which the war continues to be encountered and remembered is that of literature—and yet the war is also a fact of history, an event, a happening. Because of this complex and often confounding mixture of history and literature, the joint roles of historiography and literary scholarship in understanding both the war and the literature it occasioned demand to be acknowledged. Novels, poems, and memoirs may be understood as engagements with and accounts of history as much as they may be understood as literary artifacts; the war and its culture have in turn generated an idiosyncratic poetics. It has conventionally been argued that the dawn of the war's modern literary scholarship and historiography can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s—a period which the cultural historian Jay Winter has described as the “Vietnam Generation” of scholarship. -

Second Doornkop, May 1900 Four years later the British were back at Doornkop. That is, if one presumes the Rhodesian raiders, acting in the private interest of Rhodes and his fellow conspirators to overthrow the ZAR government, were “British”; and if one assumes a rather loose definition of the battlefield to be described. May 1900 was towards the end of the first year of war. The South African War, also known as the Second or Anglo Boer War had started badly for Britain with a series of setbacks in October and November 1899 that saw British forces besieged at Ladysmith, Kimberley as well as Mafekeng and followed by Black Week, a series of calamities in the Cape and Natal during December 1899: Stormberg (10 December), Magersfontein (11 December) and Colenso (15 December). Over the New Year the British had recovered their posture and early in the year they had launched a general counter-offensive in both the Cape and Natal. By March Bloemfontein had fallen and Imperial forces were poised to move on the ZAR, which they reached in May. “Second Doornkop”, is a controversial battle, one which several writers have condemned as unnecessary. Field Marshal Lord Michael Carver writes in The National Army Museum Book of the Boer War that Lt Gen Ian Hamilton “engaged in what many thought a needlessly direct frontal attack. 95 ” Pakenham goes further saying the attack, when made, took some of its observers aback: “Then to the surprise of one of the brigadiers, (Maj Gen Hutton) and one of the correspondents (Churchill), Hamilton launched his two infantry brigades on a four mile wide frontal attack on the ridge.” 96 Both statements need interrogation; suffice to say the attack forms an integral part of the greater battle of Johannesburg that took place over two days in late May 1900. -
