WU is located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, some 800 kms South of Bangkok. It is close to one of the most famous tourist attractions in Thailand, the Island of Samui in Surat Thani. Nakhon Si Thammarat is about one-hour flight from Bangkok. On 29th March 2018, WU celebrates the 26th anniversary of its foundation. Understandably, it has had ups and downs over those years. But all in all, WU has been able to maintain its greatest strengths in terms of quality staff, world class research, community engagement, and employability for graduates. Its strength in the area of Health Sciences is second to none in Thailand. The School of Medicine will be expanded even further when the 750-bed Hospital Center is completed at the end of 2019. Needless to say, WU needs a lot of changes to keep up with the fast-changing world. Some changes here may have to be even quite drastic. It is a big challenge for me, but I am excited about new opportunities here. It will be very different from my previous Professorship and Presidency at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) in Bangkok.

“My ‘W/ri[gh]t/E’ and My Land”: A Postcolonial Feminist Study on Grassroots’ Archives and Autobiography (1937-2004) By Sinith Sittirak A thesis submitted in fulfillment the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2013 To Jaroon Ek-in, my mentor and brother-in-law, who was a dedicated educator in the Thai Ministry of Education. Jaroon had waited many years for the completion of this thesis. Sadly, he passed away a few months prior to its conclusion. iii Abstract Inspired by the story of Pornpet Meuansri, a land rights activist, who was brutally killed on the way back home from her farm leaving behind her 400 petitions, diaries, letters, news clippings, court documents and other archival records, my thesis aims to answer the central questions of “Can the subaltern write? And how do we begin to read their writing?” These questions are then addressed within the combined frameworks of postcolonial geography and feminist research practice specifically focusing on auto/biography and the innovative approaches of revelatory reading and engaging women’s archives and women’s life narratives intersubjectively. In this regard, Trinh Thi Minh-ha's idea of “territorialised knowledge” as well as Luce Irigaray's notion of “approaching the other as other” and Spivak's question "Can the subaltern speak?" are applied to Pornpet’s work in an effort to create a more inclusive postcolonial geographical knowledge which reflects more in-depth race and class specificities. As a result, the thesis elaborates upon three significant areas of original contribution to the disciplines of postcolonial feminist geography and archives studies: theoretical, methodological and epistemological.

  • Trang-Samui Island-Nakhon Si Thammarat
Trang-Samui Island-Nakhon Si Thammarat Preface This Manuscript is prepared for a four days field check programme in order to fulfill the meeting of the 9th MT-JGSC held in Trang, Thailand from 10-16 September 2012. The main aims of the project are to minimize the geological discontinuities along the Malaysia-Thailand border and to update the geological information of the two countries in various scales. Details on geology of the Transect along the Malaysia-Thailand border have been presented and discussed during the meeting held at Thamrin Thana. Correlation of rock units and stratigraphy of the northern part of the Malaysian side and southern part of the Thai side can be made at some levels. Field check routes show a large variety of geological evidences on the Thai side including typical rock units, minerals, fossils and other geological interests at the Bang Khan-Thung Yai area, Khanom area and Samui Island. The first and second places are known as the two significant areas for Mesozoic and Paleozoic rocks whereas the third place is known as the area for Triassic granite and Paleozoic roof pendants with famous geotourism sites. Finally, the organizers of this joint field trip do hope that this manuscript will benefit not only for all participants of this trip but also for those who are interested in geoconservation and future geopark managements particularly in this region.
