Carnivorous arachnids, such as spiders and scorpions, are notoriously known for their cannibalistic tendencies. Studies of the conflict between arachnid males and females focus mainly on spiders because of the frequent occurrence of sexual cannibalism and unique genital morphology of both sexes. The morphology, in combination with common polyandry, further promotes the sexual conflict in form of an intense sperm competition and male tactics to reduce or avoid it. Scorpion females usually mate only once per litter, but the conflict between sexes is also intense, as females can be very aggressive, and so males engage in complicated mating dances including various components considered to reduce female aggression and elicit her cooperation. -

Whereas post-copulatory sexual selection; previous work on two Drosophila species shows that these spines function in precopulatory adaptive function; precopulatory sexual selection to initiate genital coupling and promote male sexual conflict. competitive copulation success, further research is needed to evaluate the potential for Drosophila genital spines to have a post-copulatory function. Using a precision micron-scale laser surgery technique, we test the effect of spine length reduction on copulation duration, male competitive fertilization success, female fecundity and female remating behaviour. We find no evi- dence that male genital spines in this species have a post-copulatory adap- tive function. Instead, females mated to males with surgically reduced/ blunted genital spines exhibited comparatively greater short-term fecundity relative to those mated by control males, indicating that the natural (i.e. unaltered) form of the trait may be harmful to females. In the absence of an effect of genital spine reduction on measured components of post-copulatory fitness, the harm seems to be a pleiotropic side effect rather than adaptive. -

(Araneae: Dysderidae), is described and illustrated with male and female specimens collected in Bulgaria (South Pirin Mountain, Kresna Gorge, Rupite). The male palps of this species are similar to these of H. srednogora DIMITROV, LAZAROV, 1999 but embolus is long, falcate and apically pointed. Key words: Harpactea samuili sp. n., maquis, South Pirin Mountain, Rupite Introduction The Dysderidae, a rather species-rich spider family in the Mediterranean countries, shows remark- able diversity in southeastern Europe, and especially on the Balkan Peninsula (PLATNICK 2006, DELTSHEV 1999). However, in terms of the taxonomy and faunistics, there are still quite a few regions remaining insufficiently investigated. One of these is Bulgaria, where in the last decade several new species were discovered and described (see e.g. DIMITROV, LAZAROV 1999, LAZAROV 2006). This process is very likely to continue also in the future. The current paper provides a de- scription of a new species of Harpactea, which was recently discovered in southwestern Bulgaria, in the frames of a scientific project aiming at the inventory of the maquis habitats. Material and Methods The material was collected by pitfall trapping. The traps were filled with 4 % formalin and emp- tied once a month. The colour of the new species is taken from alcohol and formalin preserved specimens. All measurements used in the description are given in mm. -

The draft assembly was obtained using short (illumina) and long (PacBio and Nanopore) sequencing reads. Our de novo assembly (1.36 Gb), that represents the 80% of the genome size estimated by flow-cytometry (1.7 Gb), is constituted by a high fraction of interspersed repetitive elements (53.8%). The assembly completeness, using BUSCO (benchmarking universal single-copy orthologs) and CEG (Core Eukaryotic genes), ranges from 90% to 96%. -

As such, this group of often-enigmatic arthropods offers unlimited and sometimes unparalleled opportunities to address fundamental questions in ecology, evolution, physiology, neurobiology, and behaviour (among others). Amblypygids (Order Amblypygi), for example, possess distinctly elongated walking legs covered with sensory hairs capable of detecting both airborne and substrate-borne chemical stimuli, as well as mechanoreceptive information. Simultaneously, they display an extraordinary central nervous system with distinctly large and convoluted higher order processing centres called mushroom bodies. -

Arbeitman1* Abstract Objectives: Arachnids have fascinating and unique biology, particularly for questions on sex diferences and behav- ior, creating the potential for development of powerful emerging models in this group. Recent advances in genomic techniques have paved the way for a signifcant increase in the breadth of genomic studies in non-model organisms. One growing area of research is comparative transcriptomics. When phylogenetic relationships to model organisms are known, comparative genomic studies provide context for analysis of homologous genes and pathways. The goal of this study was to lay the groundwork for comparative transcriptomics of sex diferences in the brain of wolf spiders, a non-model organism of the pyhlum Euarthropoda, by generating transcriptomes and analyzing gene expression. Data description: To examine sex-diferential gene expression, short read transcript sequencing and de novo tran- scriptome assembly were performed. Messenger RNA was isolated from brain tissue of male and female subadult and mature wolf spiders (Schizocosa ocreata). The raw data consist of sequences for the two diferent life stages in each sex. Computational analyses on these data include de novo transcriptome assembly and diferential expression analy- ses. Sample-specifc and combined transcriptomes, gene annotations, and diferential expression results are described in this data note and are available from publicly-available databases. -
