Las Vegas, Nevada. ^ Return to Table of Contents Historical Background The original publication of Armed Services Editions (ASE) books was a project that provided reading material for World War II service members between 1942 and 1947. During this time, the United States Navy and Army (including the Air Forces) received a total of 122,951,031 mass-produced paperback volumes of over 1,300 titles. In 2002, the Legacy Project revived ASE publications for American troops abroad at the time. Formed by a group of publishers, booksellers, authors and libraries, the Council on Books in Wartime (CBW) worked to support World War II efforts of the U.S. Army and Navy with the publication of non- fiction and fiction. Titles include books about war, humorous books, popular fiction classics, and anthologies of stories and verses. The CBW used the slogan "books are weapons in the war of ideas" to emphasize the - Page 3- Guide to the Beverly Rogers Collection of Armed Services Editions need not only for entertainment, but also for education regarding political, historical, and military issues. These publications predominantly, but not exclusively, featured contemporary best sellers. The CBW initially sold ASE books to the Army and Navy at the cost of manufacture (approximately six cents per volume) plus ten cents for overhead costs. In the ASE's development, the CBW focused on the books' portability first and foremost, as they had to fit into a soldier's pocket. As such, the CBW printed the books as "two-ups," or as pairs, one above the other, in a single magazine that was cut horizontally in half to create two separate pocket-sized books. They typically measured 14 centimeters by 10 centimeters after slicing, with longer books measuring 16.5 centimeters by 11.5 centimeters. The CBW published the first ASE book in 1943. In the original publication run, the CBW organized the ASE titles numerically by monthly series until Series "HH," the thirty-fourth and last monthly series of the original ASE project in 1946. After WWII, the CBW agreed to continue the paperback prints, running until Series "TT," the last print series delivered in September 1947. Beginning in 2002, Andrew Caroll, author and archivist, revived the ASE's publication with the Legacy Project prints, denoted by the Series "LP."     Notas sobre el estilo El último entuerto que conviene desfacer es el que habla de King como de un cineasta “sin estilo”. Si por estilo se entiende llamar la atención sobre la cámara, forzar los ángulos, montar aparatosos encuadres y hacer notar el trabajo del director, King es, en efecto, un director sin estilo. Algunas de sus películas, como Deep Waters, adoptan además una forma visual aparentemente anodina, que puede pasar por impersonal si a la carencia de atractivos externos se une una extrema funcionalidad narrativa, como sucede en dos de sus obras fundamentales, I’d Climb the Highest Mountain y Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie. Un examen detallado de estas y otras películas revela la existencia de una personalidad cinematográfica muy acusada, aunque no llamativa ni evidente. Más que afanarse en la búsqueda de un estilo propio, King intentó desarrollar a lo largo de su carrera un lenguaje que se correspondiese, visual y narrativamente, con los modos de sus personajes, por lo general inteligentes y discretos, observadores y dinámicos, inconformistas y sensibles a los cambios que se producen en su entorno. Conforme avanzaba su obra, películas y personajes fueron haciéndose progresivamente más complejos, sin que King violentara por ello su estilo, cada vez más refinado y transparente, permeable a los avances técnicos (el sonido, el color, la pantalla ancha) pero no a las modas ni a retóricas pasajeras.     the storytellers book club presents The Watch That Ends the Night Hugh MacLennan (Macmillan, 1959, now available from McGill-Queen’s) I knew Hugh MacLennan well. I knew him in the 1960s first as a friend and neighbour at his cottage at North Hatley, in the Eastern Townships, then as his editor (for his last novel, Voices in Time), and as his publisher. After his death in 1990, I created the anthology Hugh MacLennan’s Best, selected from all of his work, fiction and non-fiction. In 2013, when Two Solitudes was selected as a finalist for Canada Reads, I was asked by the CBC to speak on Hugh’s behalf, which was a very great honour. Although I can claim to have edited all of the other four books that I have selected for this book club, I did not edit The Watch That Ends the Night, which I think is Hugh MacLennan’s best book. It was published in 1959, when I was still in high school (although I still remember browsing through the paperback version at a Glasgow Station book stall, attracted by the exciting — if misleading — log- ging scene on the cover. Ah, those publishers!). Hugh had spent many years writing it. Elspeth Cameron’s defini- tive biography Hugh MacLennan: A Writer’s Life shows that as far back as July 1954 he had felt able to say that he had the whole novel drafted “from beginning to end,” but it took him several years to finish it. One reason was Hugh’s determination to make sure that this, a sig- nificant novel dealing with major themes, was not going to be rushed.

The paper focuses on Abraham and Simon, who were reformers in the field of medical education in the United States. The dialogue takes Abraham Flexner through his undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins University, his founding of a school that specialized in educating wealthy (but underachieving) boys, and his marriage to Anne Laziere Crawford. Abraham and his colleague, Henry S. Pritchett, traveled around the country assessing 155 medical schools in hopes of professionalizing medical education. The travels culminated in a report on "Medical Education in the United States and Canada" (1910). Abraham capped his career by creating the first significant "think tank," the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The paper also profiles Simon Flexner, a pharmacist whose dream was to become a pathologist. Simon, too, gravitated to Johns Hopkins University where he became chief pathologist and wrote over 200 pathology and bacteriology reports between 1890-1909. He also helped organize the Peking Union Medical College in Peking, China, and was appointed Eastman Professor at Oxford University.(BT) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.
