It focuses on topics such as globalisation, economic development, diversification of and challenges facing resource rich economies, trade relations between the Gulf States and major trading partners, energy trading, security and migration. The Programme primarily studies the six states that comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, it also adopts a more flexible and broader conception when the interests of research require that key regional and international actors, such as Yemen, Iraq, Iran, as well as its interconnections with Russia, China and India, be considered. The Programme is hosted in LSE’s interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Global Governance, and led by Professor David Held, co- director of the Centre. It supports post-doctoral researchers and PhD students, develops academic networks between LSE and Gulf institutions, and hosts a regular Gulf seminar series at the LSE, as well as major biennial conferences in Kuwait and London. Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable, Arab Capital City By Alamira Reem Bani Hashim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair Professor Michael Southworth Professor Greig Crysler Summer 2015 © Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Abstract Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable Arab Capital City by Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair The overarching objective of this research project is to explore and document the urban history of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is organized as a comparative study of urban planning and design processes in Abu Dhabi during three major periods of the city’s development following the discovery of oil: (1) 1960-1966: Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule (2) 1966-2004: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule; and (3) 2004-2013: Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s rule. The intention of this study is to go beyond a typical historical narrative of sleepy village-turned-metropolis, to compare and contrast the different visions of each ruler and his approach to development; to investigate the role and influence of a complex network of actors, including planning institutions, architects, developers, construction companies and various government agencies; to examine the emergence and use of comprehensive development plans and the policies and values underlying them; as well as to understand the decision-making processes and design philosophies informing urban planning, in relation to the political and economic context of each period.

)Monthly Islamic & Cultural Magazine( Issued by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments Year 44th - Jan. 2018 -Issue 517 The Federal National Council passes a law on endowment Forum for Promoting Peace: A platform echoing farther across continents O Allah, the Emirates of Giving! Every day a new dawn greeting you with a bright smile and every day you are showering down the world with plenty of benevolence and a host of initiatives echoing farther across oceans and continents. O, the Emirates of happiness and peace deeply embedded in the days of the wise leader, the late Sheikh Zayed, as we draw closer to a new year and we engrave on its beginning words of fragrance and shinning light, Year of Zayed, the Benevolent. In this respect, what would the Arab poet, Abu Tayeb say if he were to live one day in the era of a wise man of his time, Sheikh Zayed? He would write a poem praising a man who set up a strategy for a prosperous country and left behind a well-deserved reputation around the world. He would write a poem hailing his benevolence and charity, which have never ceased like a rainy cloud irrigating land even after his demise, and his grave is like a cloud carrying water providing for humankind. Let the words fly free in the sky of the Emirates because the words have voices that are heard globally speaking of peace and tolerance. The Forum of Promot- ing Peace in Muslim Societies brings about people of intellect and understanding from every corner of the globe and its leaders who are in love with the essence of religion belonging to the Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic family.

Dr. Diana Boxer has been everything I could ever have wanted in a chair and a mentor. Her encouragement and good advice kept me going even while I was overseas and prospects of finishing seemed remote. I have greatly benefited from working with her and learning from her, and I cannot thank her enough for the time she has spent with me. I have the deepest professional and personal admiration for her. Dr. Aida Bamia was of invaluable help with the Arabic part of this dissertation, going far beyond the call of duty in her help with the transliteration and interpretation of the Arabic language data (although I take all responsibility for any incorrect information). I have also appreciated her friendship and our many wonderful conversations on Arab culture. I would like to give her my thanks for being so patient with my lack of knowledge of the Arabic language. I would like to thank Dr. Joaquim Camps for his help with the statistical part of this research.
