Dear California Congressional Delegation:

Your California constituent family farms, businesses and allied groups urgently express our grave concerns with the ongoing West Coast port labor dispute. The impacts of the slowdown of terminal activity at the Ports of Oakland, Long Beach and Los Angeles and other West Coast container ports are severe. It is having a devastating impact on our livelihoods and the rural communities we support.

It is important that you recognize that there is nothing that we produce in California in agriculture and forest products that cannot be sourced from somewhere else. We can grow and process the best in the world, but if we cannot deliver our California products affordably and dependably, the foreign customers will go somewhere else and may never return.

After nine months of negotiations, both sides have reached an impasse, despite the involvement of a federal mediator. The continuous uncertainty, crippling congestion, ships skipping calls, random walk-outs and lock-outs have forced us to lay off Californians, absorb huge financial losses, and prevented us from being able to export this year’s crop. In fact, the uncertainty is already causing foreign customers to cancel orders for future deliveries!

Here in California, we are dependent on the foreign markets for so much of what we grow and manufacture. We take full advantage of trade agreements negotiated over the past two decades which have provided opportunities to new markets; but that has now come to a halt.

Our agriculture and forest products exports and imports have been extremely beneficial to our marine terminals and to the thousands of workers engaged in logistics and transport throughout the West Coast. We are now losing that cargo and those jobs.

Since the expiration of their contract last June, we have urged the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) to consider the devastating impact this dispute is having on California jobs and California’s future as a supplier to the world. We have also urged the President to help resolve this contract negotiation. We desperately need your help to publically stress the importance of efficient and functioning ports and to get the parties to restore port productivity. California’s future as a supplier of food and fiber to the world depends on it!
