Stockholm is built on fourteen islands and the surrounding water is so clean that one can even go for a swim in the summertime just outside the Royal Palace in the city centre. The landscape, and the unique archipelago of 30,000 islands, offers numerous excursions to all visitors. With its well-preserved medieval city centre, royal palaces and impressive monuments, Stockholm is considered to be of great beauty and historical interest. Culture, entertainment and restaurants abound catering all tastes. Stockholm was designated the very first European Green Capital award for 2010 by the European Commission. The European Green Capital Award is given to a city that has a record of achieving high environmental standards, is committed to ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development, and can act as a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practices in other European cities. The City of Stockholm has also been designated Intelligent Community of the Year 2009. Stockholm was chosen, among other things, for the city’s various e-services and for its investments in an open-access fibre network. Behind the award stands the think tank The Intelligent Community Forum, ICF, that each year selects the most intelligent community in an awards cycle. In the world of science, medicine and literature, Stockholm is associated with Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Prize. The City Hall of Stockholm, site of the annual Nobel Prize Award festivities, often hosts receptions of international conventions. On behalf of the City of Stockholm we wish to announce our full support and welcome you to organize the World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations in the Swedish capital. We are happy to assist you in turning the congress into a success. We are confident that Stockholm will measure up to your highest expectations and sincerely hope that you will allow our city the privilege and pleasure of receiving you here in 2019. Dear Sirs, Stockholm is one of the world’s most popular cities for meetings of almost all sizes. Not least due to its proven record of organization, infrastructure and typical Scandinavian attention to detail, flexibility and efficiency. Based on innovation and fuelled by high technology, the Stockholm region’s economy boasts one of the world’s most prominent ICT clusters, one of Europe’s largest life sciences clusters and fast growing cleantech and fashion industries – to name but a few. The Capital of Scandinavia also presents an abundance of culture, attractions and world-renowned entertainment. As a clear recognition of the fact that sustainability is continuing to be a top priority for Stockholm - Stockholm was awarded the “European Green Capital” in 2010. Reaching Stockholm is swift and simple regardless of where your journey starts. And well here you have high-speed connection from Ar- landa Airport, and one of the most efficient and well-structured public transport system in the world, at your service. If you don’t just choose to walk around in this compact city.. Please find enclosed a presentation of Stockholm that will give you a first glance of the city and its many advantages as a destination for successful congresses. Emnekode: BE325E Navn på kandidat: Kjell Norrblom Hvordan har charterselskapene respondert på den økende konkurransen i fritidsmarkedet? Dato: 17.11.2017 Totalt antall sider: 144 Abstract This master thesis intends to make a research into the traditional Scandinavian charter business, and the rapidly growing challenges by the ever-increasing competition from the leisure sector, mainly from European low-cost carriers and Middle-East companies. I did intend to analyse the ability of the charter business to survive long term, but had to amend the subject area, as the focus area was well too broad. As an alternative I intend to describe how «the traditionally Scandinavian charter business has responded to an ever-increasing competition», and I will also be presenting possible strategic and marketing solutions, in its future survival. Secondary data indicate that the low-cost companies together with the Middle-East companies are offering numerous customer budget holiday solutions, and they are also able to penetrate the Scandinavian market with different ways of dynamic packing, made possible via new technology and the Internet. This in turn has created huge challenges and a substantial problem for the traditional Scandinavian charter business. Through my research I enlightened myself with knowledge that influence the topic. The theories considered relevant are numerous, and I have primarily discussed Poster’s strategic models and relevant perspectives. Beyond this I have discussed the VRIO framework, «the burning platform theory», Red Ocean vs Blue Ocean etc. I have taken an inductive approach with the aim of bridging empirics and theory. Primarily I have employed a qualitative methodology for my study design, with a number of trough in-depth and semi structured interviews of aviation- and charter business professionals, as well as observations in the field.
