  • MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES and CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release May 1994 MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994 A retrospective celebrating the seventieth anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, the legendary Hollywood studio that defined screen glamour and elegance for the world, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on June 24, 1994. MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. On view through September 30, the exhibition highlights a number of classics, as well as lesser-known films by directors who deserve wider recognition. MGM's films are distinguished by a high artistic level, with a consistent polish and technical virtuosity unseen anywhere, and by a roster of the most famous stars in the world -- Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, and Spencer Tracy. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991). Less familiar titles are Monta Bell's Pretty Ladies and Lights of Old Broadway (both 1925), Rex Ingram's The Garden of Allah (1927) and The Prisoner - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 of Zenda (1929), Fred Zinnemann's Eyes in the Night (1942) and Act of Violence (1949), and Anthony Mann's Border Incident (1949) and The Naked Spur (1953).

Bradford Committee Members, Ralph Adams Terrence Hoagwood John C. Lenihan Brian Linn Head of Department, Walter Buenger May 2011 Major Subject: History iii ABSTRACT “The Fourth Dimension of Naval Tactics”: The U.S. Navy and Public Relations, 1919- 1939. (May 2011) Ryan David Wadle, B.A., Iowa State University; M.A., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. James C. Bradford Prior to 1917, the United States Navy only utilized public relations techniques during times of war or to attract recruits into naval service. Following World I, the Navy confronted several daunting problems, including the postwar demobilization of naval assets, the proposed creation of an independent air service, and a public desire for naval arms limitation which many officers believed would endanger the Navy‟s ability to fulfill its missions. These issues threatened the generous support that the Navy had received from Congress for a quarter of a century, and also hampered the service‟s attempts to incorporate new weapons systems into its arsenal and recruit high-quality manpower.

2 Silent Pictures Silent pictures. The Great Marion Davies Murder. An opening at the Cosmopolitan Theatre. Marion moves to California. Terrified by a lion. A party for the King of Siam. Mr. Hearst puts all his eggs in one basket. MD: I couldn’t act, but the idea of silent pictures appealed to me, because I couldn’t talk either. Silent pictures were right up my alley, and that’s how I got all the bad notices, except for the one that Louella Parsons wrote [in 1922]. She was working on the [New York] Morning Telegraph, and W.R. apparently read her review. Everybody else said, “Stinking.” But Louella said, “Give the girl a chance.” W.R. immediately hired her for the New York American, because of that one review. TC: A possible conflation here: Marion’s “Stinking” may allude to Cecilia of the Pink Roses (1918) whereas Louella’s words refer more directly to When Knighthood Was in Flower (1922). Miss Parsons wasn’t hired by W.R. until 1923. See George Eells, Hedda and Louella, p. 91; see also Samantha Barbas, The First Lady of Hollywood, pp. 80-85. MD: W.R. always said to me, “Never read any bad reviews about yourself. Read only the good ones.” Of course I thought, What if there are no good ones? Then I’m really in the dumps. I’d rather read the bad ones than the good ones anyway, because at least there are more of them. And you might find out what’s wrong. If they say this scene or that scene is not good enough, or if the comedy is lacking, maybe you can perk it up.

  • Marie Dressler
Marie Dressler Also Known As: Leila Marie Koerber Lived: November 9, 1868 - July 28, 1934 Worked as: comedienne, film actress, producer, scenarist, theatre actress Worked In: United States by Paul Moore Marie Dressler was a top star who died at the height of her popularity. Her career is thoroughly documented, and this synopsis unavoidably recounts the tireless efforts of biographies by Betty Lee and Matthew Kennedy. She remains a comedienne with a loyal following, with a foundation and museum in her birthplace of Cobourg, Ontario. In the context of women behind-the-scenes in early film production, Dressler provides an example of a failed attempt to turn stage and screen fame into an eponymous production company where she had a hand in writing the resulting two- reelers. In the mid-1910s, it was common to turn movie stardom into professional autonomy by creating an eponymous film company. Dressler’s self-produced films were the last before a well- mythologized descent into poverty and reemergence as an MGM early-sound star with the help of loyal friend, screenwriter Frances Marion. Her decline coincided with well-publicized off-screen activities including the World War I bond drive and the 1919 Actors’ Equity strike. Assertions that she was the victim of anti-union blacklisting remain unsubstantiated by her biographers Lee and Kennedy, who conclude instead that she had simply spent too much time off stage and screen, or in lackluster roles. Dressler’s comic persona crystallized into the character Tillie Blobbs onstage in 1910. A 1915 Moving Picture World review described the effect as, “sort of a reckless elephant with dare-devil instincts consistently foiled by her size and weight” (463).

Italy, 1902–1988), who was hired by George Eastman during the late period of silent cinema, from 1924 to 1928, to design and hand-paint film posters for the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York. In advance of seeing the films themselves, Madalena would work with still photographs, press materials, and his passion for particular performers to create one-of-a-kind posters promoting larger-than-life subjects, all on a scale that could be clearly seen from cars passing the theater’s outdoor poster vitrines. Working alone over a four-year period and against deadlines that required as many as eight new posters a week for each change of bill, Madalena created over 1,400 original works before the end of his tenure, when the theater changed management. Approximately 250 of these posters survived when the artist himself rescued them from the trash behind the theater.
