That is why I believe that the foundation of the Metro- Goldwyn organization throughout Australia and New Zealand means more to Exhibitors than the mere establishment of a new motion picture exchange. It means that henceforth Exhibitors will be assured of an unfailing supply of uniformly high-grade productions, the output of the vast organization created by the union of the Metro-Goldwyn-Louis B. Mayer, Cosmopolitan interests. I have but recently returned from the United States where Metro-Goldwyn is now recognised as the leader of the industry. A perusal of comment and criticism in current trade journals will convince you of the truth of this. I spent many days in the Metro-Goldwyn Studios in Culver City— the largest central- ized studios in the world—where seventeen producing companies are constantly at work under successful directors who have become specialists in the particular type of productions de- manded by modern audiences. In New York and other centres I saw Metro-Goldwyn productions playing to unprecedented business. Actual observation and a wide experience of motion pictures convinces me chat Metro-Goldwyn has THE PICTURES WITH POPULAR APPEAL—and after all this is the only thing that counts in this business. During the coming year you will receive from Metro- Goldwyn something like One Hundred first-class productions, most of which I have seen. It is the purpose of this book to give you, by means of pictures and type, some idea of the sol- idity, strength and progressive policy of Metro-Goldwyn and of the infinite variety and worth of our product— the product, which has, in less than a year of active output placed Metro-Goldwyn pre-eminent in the field. Since returning to Australia, my efforts have been devoted to the building up of an organization which will be of real service to Exhibitors. Norris wrote his now famous novel “ McTeague he described a terribly truthful chain of events strange love and crude ; thoughts and overwhelming impulses.     Blanche Sewell Lived: October 27, 1898 - February 2, 1949 Worked as: editor, film cutter Worked In: United States by Kristen Hatch Blanche Sewell entered the ranks of negative cutters shortly after graduating from Inglewood High School in 1918. She assisted cutter Viola Lawrence on Man, Woman, Marriage (1921) and became a cutter in her own right at MGM in the early 1920s. She remained an editor there until her death in 1949.     Cissy Fitzgerald Also Known As: Marie Kathleen Cecilia Fitzgerald, Mrs. Oliver Mark Tucker, "The Girl with the Wink" Lived: February 1, 1873 - May 10, 1941 Worked as: dancer, film actress, film company owner, producer, theatre actress Worked In: United States by Maggie Hennefeld With a film career spanning over four decades—from a vaudeville dancer in an early Edison actuality and a silent comic film actress to an independent producer in the 1920s and a character actor in talkies in the 1930s— Cissy Fitzgerald experienced the vicissitudes of early film history. Born on February 1, 1873, christened Marie Kathleen Cecilia Fitzgerald, and educated in a British convent, Fitzgerald was already famous for her stage dancing and coquettish wink when she made her first screen appearance in 1896. Best known as “The Girl With the Wink,” Fitzgerald primarily worked in theater until her transition to comedic film acting in 1914. She appeared in multiple, trans-Atlantic runs of “The Gaiety Girl,” “The Foundling,” and “The Family.” Although she only appeared in one film role prior to 1914, an Edison Vitascope recording of her dance act in a Boston Keith-Albee show, her stage personality radiated cinematic qualities. From her saucy lingerie dancing to her gleefully incessant winking, Fitzgerald integrated bodily displays with the act of looking while most films were still shot in static, long-framed, proscenium views. When “she kicked herself” up from $50 to a $350 per week salary in her first American engagement, an unlabeled scrapbook clipping found in the Robinson Locke collection at the New York Public Library advertised Fitzgerald’s exciting range of allures: “Her dancing is distinguished for its seductiveness, its lingerie display, and its celebrated wink accompaniment.” Her first film appearance, as Charles Musser explains, was viewed as a supplement to her live stage performance (170).

    THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART 14 WEST 49TH STREET, NEW YORK TEUEPHONE: CIRCLE 7-7470 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Legends to the contrary notwithstanding, the negative of Erich von Stroheim's much-discussed film, Greed, has been preserved in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's vaults and it has therefore been possible to include this celebrated "masterpiece of realism" in the Museum of Modern Art Film Libraryfs current Series IV, The Swedish Film and Post-War American Films, Greed will be shown to Museum members on Wednesday, February 23rd, at 8:45 P.M. in the auditorium of the American Museum of Natural History, 77th Street and Central Park West. Thereafter it will be available to students of the film in i colleges and museums throughout the country. Greed, a faithful transcription into pictorial terms of Frank Norris1 novel, "McTeague," was created under unusual circumstances and met with a curious fate. It was not made in a studio, but on location in San Francisco. Whole blocks and houses were purchased as settings , walls knocked out to make the photography of real in­ teriors practicable. Every detail of the novel was reproduced at considerable expense of time and money, with a passionate and un­ compromising care for veracity. Eventually von Stroheim offered his producers his finished work, a final cut print twenty reels long which he proposed they should issue in two parts, and which bore no perceptible trace of those elements usually reckoned as "box office. The film was taken from him, cut down to the present ten reel ver­ sion and so released.
