This course surveys different genres emphasizes reasoning and writing skills. We will examine a variety of works, including procedural texts, business correspondence, informational texts, expository and argumentative essays, speeches, and a novel. In particular, to understand the author’s purpose, we will pay close attention to the rhetorical devices and structure of the different genres. COURSE ORGANIZATION AND GRADING This course is divided into seven lessons. Each lesson consists of several discussions, each of which is followed by an assignment. The discussions will guide you through the information, materials, and activities that will help you achieve the objectives for the lesson. The lesson assignments are labeled as “Assignment 1.1”, “Assignment 1.2”, and so on. Lesson assignments will contain objective, short-answer, and essay questions and can only be completed once. The graded assignments will vary in point value, depending on the amount and nature of the required work. Each assignment will be graded on a 100 point grading scale. All lesson grades will be averaged together and then averaged with your final exam grade. The assignments count 75% and the final counts 25% to the total grade for the course, but if you cannot pass the final with a grade 70 or above, you cannot receive credit for the course. You must pass the final in order to pass the course! 10 |English 1B – Reading, Writing, and Grammar COURSE OBJECTIVES After completing this course, you should be able to § produce analogies that describe a function of an object or its description § analyze, make inferences, and draw conclusions about a persuasive texts § evaluate the quality and credibility

    2017 PARTICIPANTS LJ Amsterdam is a trainer, youth organizer, dancer, and movement-weaver born and raised in New York City. Her work is all about love in service of collective action. She has been organizing for a decade and is most passionate about designing political education and organizing trainings for young people. She founded Social Justice Leadership Academy, a 5-week summer organizing training course for teenagers in the Hudson Valley; Re-Up, a leadership development course for white working-class substance users and sellers; and Standing Rock Solidarity Network, which created trainings and written resources for non-Native folks traveling to Standing Rock. She also completed her MA at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University in 2012, where her thesis on indigenous hip-hop and love won the Zora Neale Hurston Award and has since been published in multiple iterations. She is currently a staff member at The Ruckus Society and most recently co-organized About Face Veterans Action Camp at The Highlander Center with Iraq Veterans Against the War, a training dedicated to sharing and translating skills and community healing. Johanna Blakley is the managing director at the Norman Lear Center, a research and public policy institute that explores the convergence of entertainment, commerce and society. Based at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Johanna performs research on a wide variety of topics, including global entertainment, cultural diplomacy, entertainment education, digital media and intellectual property law. She has two talks on TED.com and she speaks freQuently in the U.S.

Topical Areas within the survey include: Ticket price students are willing to pay Genres that students want to see Artists/Bands that student have seen and want to see This online survey was initiated on January 20, 2012, and was closed on February 3, 2012. Three Thousand emails were sent out to Eastern Illinois University students. Of those contacted to participate in the online survey, 252(8.4%) initiated the survey, while 176 (5.9%) students completed the survey. Survey Results What is the Maximum ticket price you are willing to spend on a major concert artist/event at EIU? *(Table 1) Student participants responded with a range from $2-$150. 60% of student responses fell between $20-$30 Mean = $29.47 Median = $25 Favorite Genre After applying weighted influence to the ranked selection of favorite genre of music, the following results presented themselves. *(Chart 1) 23.7% selected Hip Hop/Rap 18.3% selected Pop 14.7% selected Alternative 13.5% selected Country 12.5% selected Rock/ Punk Rock 12.0% selected RB 5.4% selected Other Major Concerts per Year Student participant responses ranged from 0-20 major concerts attended in the past year.
