This course surveys different genres emphasizes reasoning and writing skills. We will examine a variety of works, including procedural texts, business correspondence, informational texts, expository and argumentative essays, speeches, and a novel. In particular, to understand the author’s purpose, we will pay close attention to the rhetorical devices and structure of the different genres. COURSE ORGANIZATION AND GRADING This course is divided into seven lessons. Each lesson consists of several discussions, each of which is followed by an assignment. The discussions will guide you through the information, materials, and activities that will help you achieve the objectives for the lesson. The lesson assignments are labeled as “Assignment 1.1”, “Assignment 1.2”, and so on. Lesson assignments will contain objective, short-answer, and essay questions and can only be completed once. The graded assignments will vary in point value, depending on the amount and nature of the required work. Each assignment will be graded on a 100 point grading scale. All lesson grades will be averaged together and then averaged with your final exam grade. The assignments count 75% and the final counts 25% to the total grade for the course, but if you cannot pass the final with a grade 70 or above, you cannot receive credit for the course.
