The primary purpose oF this study was to determine distinguishing linguistic characteristics of song lyrics most commonly used for lyric analysis with mental health consumers, as measured by LIWC2015 soFtware. A secondary purpose was to provide an updated song list resource For music therapists and music therapy students working with the mental health population. The researcher emailed a survey to 6,757 board-certiFied music therapists, 316 oF whom completed the survey. Respondents contributed 700 different songs that they deemed most eFFective For lyric analysis with mental health consumers. The researcher used the LIWC2015 software to analyze the 48 songs that were listed by Five or more music therapists. Song lyrics contained linguistic indicators oF selF- focused attention, present-focused attention, poor social relationships, and high cognitive processing. Lyrics were written in an inFormal, personal, and authentic style. Some lyrics were more emotionally positive, while others were more emotionally negative. While results must be interpreted with caution, it may be helpFul to consider linguistic elements when choosing songs for lyric analysis with mental health consumers. Green Notebook AUTHOR’S PREFACE This is a collection of my articles, essays, publications in the press and FB posts from 2014 to the fall of 2017. Sometimes these are abstract texts, sometimes reflections or emotions in response to the flow of events of that time... Those were uneasy years from Euromaidan, victorious Revolution of Dignity through despair and powerlessness of the annexation of the Crimea, seizure of the part of the Donbas, war, grief and valour... Through the formation of emotions of the next period of the historical struggle for in- dependence, national consciousness, through the hard daily work intended to launch global changes. And, which is the most important, it is the change of mentality. Why this period? I think, it needless to explain: over those years there have been so many key turning points in the fate of our country that every day deserves to remain in memory and history. Why these articles, posts and essays? For me, they are all connected with a common flow of events. I neither colored the truth nor papered over the cracks; sometimes the feelings are too strong and style may be clum- sy... Dates, people and destinies... 3 ARSEN AVAKOV I have entitled this collection The Green Notebook by the name of one of my stories, which, I think, expresses the main message of this collection: this is your life and your power to fill an empty vessel. To change the imperfect. To believe in the power of creation. So, for me, this is the only way not to become a grudge under uneasy tests with and not to turn into a tired person.

  • Nielsen Music Year-End Report Canada 2016
NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

  • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017.
