Background and Objective Axé Capoeira originated in , Brazil in 1982 and opened the fi rst-ever capoeira academy in Canada in 1996. Based in Vancouver, BC, the organization today continues to rise as one of the world’s leading schools of capoeira. With its internationally high standards of teaching and training students, Axé Capoeira has seen steady enrolment increase over the years, to a current total of approximately 10,000 students in over 30 countries around the world. Students and instructors from Axé Capoeira travel internationally to participate in capoeira workshops, competitions, and performances. The group is known for promoting the history, music, art and through interactive and educational capoeira demonstrations featured in public or for other organizations. Although Axé Capoeira celebrates the Afro-Brazilian culture, it represents much more than that. In the last 25 years the group has performed at various events helping to bring the city of Vancouver together. It is an inclusive group dedicated to preserving the roots and traditions of capoeira, as well as celebrating the diversity of Vancouver. Axé Capoeira is committed to the community, and since 1990 has been a traveling group in Canada. By touring schools across BC, including those in remote areas, members have shown a deep commitment to share their knowledge. Ensuring that a percentage of yearly performances are donated to the community, Axé Capoeira also collects clothes, musical instruments and donations from members and students to give to children both at home and abroad in Brazil. In addition to encouraging and teaching the art of capoeira across the globe, Axé Capoeira has released eight internationally acclaimed music CDs, annual performance DVDs, and a four-volume instructional DVD set. Axé Capoeira works to ensure a strong future for capoeira. Through research, travel, hosting events, and networking with other capoeira organizations in Brazil and internationally, Axé Capoeira aims to increase the group’s own knowledge of capoeira while contributing to the art’s evolution in the world.

Philosophy The philosophy of Axé Capoeira is based on respect for capoeira Mestres, those who devoted their lives to building up the art before us; on the preservation of the historical roots and traditions of capoeira; and on practicing capoeira in all its aspects: martial, aesthetic, and cultural. Instructors teach students in a way that will encourage positive, healthy growth in capoeira, delivering both physical and mental training so the student will become a well-rounded capoeirista and individual. CONTACT US The goal of capoeira is for the two players to create and maintain a physical and psychological dialogue, Julie Ali in which students learn how to create and respond to situations, within the game of capoeira and in life Manager situations outside of capoeira. By engaging with both friends and opponents students develop fl exibility Axé Capoeira of thinking, an openness to-others, and an appreciation for differences and multiculturalism. 604.761.4635 [email protected]
