  • Women and the Presidency
Women and the Presidency By Cynthia Richie Terrell* I. Introduction As six women entered the field of Democratic presidential candidates in 2019, the political media rushed to declare 2020 a new “year of the woman.” In the Washington Post, one political commentator proclaimed that “2020 may be historic for women in more ways than one”1 given that four of these woman presidential candidates were already holding a U.S. Senate seat. A writer for Vox similarly hailed the “unprecedented range of solid women” seeking the nomination and urged Democrats to nominate one of them.2 Politico ran a piece definitively declaring that “2020 will be the year of the woman” and went on to suggest that the “Democratic primary landscape looks to be tilted to another woman presidential nominee.”3 The excited tone projected by the media carried an air of inevitability: after Hillary Clinton lost in 2016, despite receiving 2.8 million more popular votes than her opponent, ever more women were running for the presidency. There is a reason, however, why historical inevitably has not yet been realized. Although Americans have selected a president 58 times, a man has won every one of these contests. Before 2019, a major party’s presidential debates had never featured more than one woman. Progress toward gender balance in politics has moved at a glacial pace. In 1937, seventeen years after passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, Gallup conducted a poll in which Americans were asked whether they would support a woman for president “if she were qualified in every other respect?”4 * Cynthia Richie Terrell is the founder and executive director of RepresentWomen, an organization dedicated to advancing women’s representation and leadership in the United States.

An Abstract of “The Heart of the Battle Is Within:” Politically and Socially Rightist and Conservative Women and the Equal Rights Amendment by Chelsea A. Griffis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History The University of Toledo May 2014 This dissertation analyzes the construction of divergent definitions of womanhood of politically and socially rightist and conservative women and how those definitions affected their stance for or against the Equal Rights Amendment. It argues that the way a woman defined her gender identity informed her position on the proposed amendment. Challenging the idea that all rightist and conservative women held a monolithic political ideology, this dissertation evaluates different women and women’s organizations of the right to show that this was not the case. Instead, some of these groups and individuals supported the ERA while opposed it.

  • Happy Birthday, Libertarian Party! 1 Message
Caryn Ann Harlos <[email protected]> Happy Birthday, Libertarian Party! 1 message Libertarian National Committee, Inc. <[email protected]> Wed, Dec 11, 2019 at 12:34 PM Reply-To: [email protected] To: Caryn Ann Harlos <[email protected]> Dear Caryn Ann, The Libertarian Party of the United States was founded on December 11, 1971, in Colorado Springs. A group of determined Liberty advocates led by David F. Nolan spent five months meeting, debating, and amending what would become the Libertarian Party’s first platform. Recognizing that the Republicans and Democrats had abandoned the original principles of Liberty the American founding fathers had set forth, this group, including John Hospers, Ed Crane, Manuel Klausner, Murray Rothbard, Roy Childs, Tonie Nathan, and Jim Dean, formed a party dedicated to the ideas of all markets being completely free. Today we are celebrating our 48th birthday and the great gift bestowed upon us and the nation by our party founders — and we hope you will celebrate the day in Liberty. In 2014, the Libertarian Party began working to purchase a headquarters and established the David. F Nolan Memorial Building Fund. Rent in the DC area has always been extremely high, so purchasing a building saves valuable resources and builds equity for the party’s future. As of November 2019, we have paid off over 80% of the building and 68% of the mortgage! We currently still owe approximately $160,000. Our physical office location in Alexandria, Va., allows us to be headquartered in the center of the political world and has been a key asset in growing our influence and legitimacy in the last few years, as well as giving our team a home in which to organize.
