UNITEL AVANT PREMIÈRE CATALOGUE 2020 CATALOGUE 2020 “Nothing but a sensation!” (SWR2)

The open-air lake stage in Bregenz is one of the most spectacular venues in the world, requiring a long and careful planning. Stage designer and director Philipp Stölzl, set designer Heike Vollmer and a large group of experts involving more than 46 engineering companies from Austria, Germany and Switzerland spent three years planning, adapting and building the scenery. Therefore Rigoletto was the natural choice as Unitel’s first opera produced in staggering Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision & Atmos. The result is a “breathtaking, tight and thrilling arrangement, extremely beautiful. Philipp Stölzl delivers a superlative Rigoletto to Bregenz lake stage” (Frankfurter Rundschau). See page 25 (opera performance) and page 54 (documentary) for details. Photo: Anja Köhler MUSIC TO WATCH since 1966

“What do we see when we listen, when we really listen to music?” Most of us would find this question difficult to answer. But back in the 1960s, one man knew what he wanted to see: the world’s best performers captured on film of the highest quality and with a sound to rival the concert hall’s. And he decided to do something about it.

Leo Kirch was this man, and the company he founded in 1966 has been dedicated to realizing his dream ever since. Unitel, now part of Jan Mojto’s corporate group, has soon become the world’s leading producer of programs for film, television, DVD & Blu-ray and Digital Media.

This Avant Premiere 2020 catalogue presents all additions from the year 2019 to Unitel’s catalogue, which in total features more than 2.000 performances of , orchestral music, chamber music, ballets and operettas, as well as musical essays, backstage footage, portraits and documentaries.

Unitel has always placed the greatest emphasis on quality, which extends to all aspects of the production: from the artists to the technology. This means that Unitel has always been at the forefront of new technological developments , always searching for the most authentic, faithful ways of duplicating and heightening the musical experience. With this catalogue we proudly present not only our first production in Dolby Vision · Atmos, but also nine of Unitel’s most legendary programs remastered by NHK to stunning 8K Super High Vision and 22.2 sound, see page 56. To end his active conducting career after 65 years, maestro Bernard Haitink together with the Wiener Philharmoniker gives a farewell concert at the Großes Festspielhaus, leaving no doubt of being one of the best Bruckner interpreters ever. The Dutch conductor, who was appointed honorary member of the Wiener Philharmoniker shortly before the concert, is joined by star pianist Emanuel Ax in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. The concert ends with Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 7: “No more Bruckner under Haitink, that’s a cut in the history of interpretation” (Wiener Zeitung).

Acclaimed by critics as an evening of superlative, Martha Argerich – doubtless one of the greatest living pianist – joins Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra for an unforgettable interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. Argerich’s playing is full of astonishing virtuosity and uncompromising, alternating with breakneck passages and tender tones: “Martha Argerich is and remains unique” (Die Presse). In addition to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant piece, Schubert’s Symphony “Unfinished” is played, a work that has never been performed during the composer’s lifetime, as well as Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra, completed in 1945 – a highly demanding technical piece that challenges orchestra members as virtuosos.

Photos: 3B-Production highest perfection, for a cult of beauty that perhaps no other master pianist has ever practiced. But it also stands for concert cancellations at short notice and artist’s neuroses, which are pleasurably spread by the media. “Beyond Perfection – Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli” is the result of a 30-year search for traces, which has not only led to interesting contemporary witnesses, but in particular has brought to light a wealth of new archive material: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli has never been seen and, above all, never heard like this before. Thus one can experience at first hand how the severely stricken maestro fights his way back to his old perfection after a heart attack. On 5 January 2020 Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli would have turned 100. This is the first comprehensive and multi-faceted portrait of the legendary pianist.
