The open-air lake stage in Bregenz is one of the most spectacular opera venues in the world, requiring a long and careful planning. Stage designer and director Philipp Stölzl, set designer Heike Vollmer and a large group of experts involving more than 46 engineering companies from Austria, Germany and Switzerland spent three years planning, adapting and building the scenery. Therefore Rigoletto was the natural choice as Unitel’s first opera produced in staggering Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision & Atmos. “What do we see when we listen, when we really listen to music?” Most of us would find this question difficult to answer. But back in the 1960s, one man knew what he wanted to see: the world’s best performers captured on film of the highest quality and with a sound to rival the concert hall’s. To end his active conducting career after 65 years, maestro Bernard Haitink together with the Wiener Philharmoniker gives a farewell concert at the Großes Festspielhaus, leaving no doubt of being one of the best Bruckner interpreters ever. In 2019 – on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death on 16th July – the world will remember one of the great conductors of the 20th century: Herbert von Karajan, who is represented in the Unitel catalogue with nearly 50 hours of music recorded at the peak of his artistry. Karajan’s association with Unitel has produced such musical treasures as the complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Franco Zeffirelli’s legendary 1965Bohème production from La Scala, the Verdi Requiem with the young Luciano Pavarotti, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s filming of Madama Butterfly with Mirella Freni, Plácido Domingo and Christa Ludwig, and many other great productions.
