Repetiteurs Masterclasses
www.georgsoltiaccademia.org Repetiteurs Masterclasses The Georg Solti Accademia announces LWV¿IWK6ROWL3HUHWWL5pSpWLWHXUV0DVWHUFODVVHV in Barcelona, 2 | 10 April 2013 The Georg Solti Accademia Répétiteur’s Masterclasses are unique in the music world, and have become the go-to intensive course for aspiring répétiteurs internationally. Featured last year on BBC 2’s series Maestro at the Opera, the course offers an immersion in preparing singers for operatic performance, with an incomparable faculty of teachers including Sir Richard Bonynge, Pamela Bullock, Jonathan Papp and Audrey Hyland. This year the President of the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundations, Ms Elsa Peretti (the pre-eminent designer for Tiffany), has made it possible for the course to be run in Elsa’s elective city of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Theatre Akademia, where WKHUpSpWLWHXU¶V¿QDOFRQFHUWZLOOWDNHSODFHRQ$SULODW Six outstanding young pianists, from $XVWUDOLD)UDQFH*UHHFH6SDLQDQGWKH8., will gather in Barcelona in April with six talented singers, all alumni of the Georg Solti Accademia’s Bel Canto course, to focus on this vital, but often hidden, craft. A répétiteur is the singer’s key ally in achieving their performance, and essential to any opera production. They are the ultimate multi-taskers of the opera world, and must be constantly alert to vocal performance, musicality, language, style and nuance, while bringing the whole orchestral score alive at the piano. No wonder so many of them go on to become great opera conductors – Georg Solti, Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev and Sir Antonio Pappano to name but four. This year the faculty includes the legendary 6LU5LFKDUG%RQ\QJH3DPHOD%XOORFN from Chicago Lyric Opera, -RQDWKDQ3DSS, Director of the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto, $XGUH\+\ODQG from the Royal Academy of Music. -

Frédéric Vaysse-Knitter | Biography
ERIC BENOIST CONSEIL Frédéric Vaysse-Knitter | Biography "[Vaysse-Knitter] is clearly following in the tradition of Chopin, Debussy and Liszt. Starting with the first book of Debussy's Images, he achieved a shocking, almost physical beauty, ringing with boundless clarity. (...) The power, gravitas and harmonic richness of his interpretation [of Liszt's Funérailles] cannot fail to impress, as Vaysse-Knitter elicits from this solemn work a diversity of sound that would rival a grand symphony orchestra. Then finally, there is Debussy's Poisson d’or (...), fluidly played, with the delicate touch of overwhelming virtuosity." Bruno Serrou (June 2016) "Every descent into the self is also an ascension, an assumption, a glance toward the true external reality." This quote from Novalis perfectly expresses the quintessence of Vaysee-Knitter's nature – his playing is characterised by an extreme intensity and sense of vital urgency that grips the listener, as the piano under his hands sings melodies of introspection and transcendence. This duality partly explains the fascination that the music of Karol Szymanowski holds for him: For several years, Vaysse-Knitter has devoted himself to Szymanowski's entire piano oeuvre, as well as to the works of his contemporaries, yet all the while, he has remained particularly attached to modern day music. His Szymanowski solo recording was highly regarded among classical music publications, receiving 4 stars from Fonoforum, 5 stars from Piano News and a "Maestro" rating from Pianiste. Similarly, his subsequent album Szymanowski-Stravinsky (released by Aparté), which he recorded with violinist Solenne Païdassi was awarded a "Choc" by Classica, their highest recommendation, as well as 5/5 by Diapason and 10/10 by Klassik Heute. -

ARSC Journal, Spring 1992 69 Sound Recording Reviews
SOUND RECORDING REVIEWS Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First Hundred Years CS090/12 (12 CDs: monaural, stereo; ADD)1 Available only from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 220 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, for $175 plus $5 shipping and handling. The Centennial Collection-Chicago Symphony Orchestra RCA-Victor Gold Seal, GD 600206 (3 CDs; monaural, stereo, ADD and DDD). (total time 3:36:3l2). A "musical trivia" question: "Which American symphony orchestra was the first to record under its own name and conductor?" You will find the answer at the beginning of the 12-CD collection, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First 100 Years, issued by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). The date was May 1, 1916, and the conductor was Frederick Stock. 3 This is part of the orchestra's celebration of the hundredth anniversary of its founding by Theodore Thomas in 1891. Thomas is represented here, not as a conductor (he died in 1904) but as the arranger of Wagner's Triiume. But all of the other conductors and music directors are represented, as well as many guests. With one exception, the 3-CD set, The Centennial Collection: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, from RCA-Victor is drawn from the recordings that the Chicago Symphony made for that company. All were released previously, in various formats-mono and stereo, 78 rpm, 45 rpm, LPs, tapes, and CDs-as the technologies evolved. Although the present digital processing varies according to source, the sound is generally clear; the Reiner material is comparable to RCA-Victor's on-going reissues on CD of the legendary recordings produced by Richard Mohr. -

MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings of the Year 2018 This
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2018 This is the fifteenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2017-November 2018). The 130 selections have come from 25 members of the team and 70 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources - I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, 8 have received two nominations: Mahler and Strauss with Sergiu Celibidache on the Munich Phil choral music by Pavel Chesnokov on Reference Recordings Shostakovich symphonies with Andris Nelsons on DG The Gluepot Connection from the Londinium Choir on Somm The John Adams Edition on the Berlin Phil’s own label Historic recordings of Carlo Zecchi on APR Pärt symphonies on ECM works for two pianos by Stravinsky on Hyperion Chandos was this year’s leading label with 11 nominations, significantly more than any other label. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR In this twelve month period, we published more than 2400 reviews. There is no easy or entirely satisfactory way of choosing one above all others as our Recording of the Year, but this year the choice was a little easier than usual. Pavel CHESNOKOV Teach Me Thy Statutes - PaTRAM Institute Male Choir/Vladimir Gorbik rec. 2016 REFERENCE RECORDINGS FR-727 SACD The most significant anniversary of 2018 was that of the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy, and while there were fine recordings of his music, none stood as deserving of this accolade as much as the choral works of Pavel Chesnokov. -
Music and the American Civil War
“LIBERTY’S GREAT AUXILIARY”: MUSIC AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR by CHRISTIAN MCWHIRTER A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2009 Copyright Christian McWhirter 2009 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Music was almost omnipresent during the American Civil War. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans. -
