Coordinated by the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Medinea network is composed of partners from the music sector involved in a dynamic of exchange and collaboration in the countries of the Mediterranean (institutions of higher education and academies, cultural centers, festivals, music markets, venues, etc.). The primary objective of the network is to support the development of innovative projects by emerging artists from the Mediterranean, from conception to performance and diffusion. The network also promotes the development of cultural exchange within the Mediterranean basin, including supporting the progress of artists, and encouraging reflection on the region’s creative works.

6,560 PARTICIPANTS IN PASSERELLES ACTIVITIES (children, youth, families, amateur musicians and singers, adults, seniors)

ACTIVITIES WERE SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 200 EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, ASSOCIATIONS, AND SOCIAL ORGANISATIONS (primary and secondary schools, high schools, universities, socio-cultural centers, social mobility organisations, hospitals, socio-medical institutes…)

109 ARTISTS AND EDUCATIONAL MODERATORS (lyrical artists, musicians, choir masters, choreographers, technical teams, visual artists, musicologists, journalists...)

IN 50 CITIES OF THE REGION (cities, districts, and villages of the PACA region)

Participating: projects of artistic practice

Each year, participative projects are designed in collaboration with renowned artists and opened to hundreds of amateurs. The projects have three objectives: to be artistic and creative, to encourage communication particularly with young people, and to invite more people to participate in the Festival’s life: choirs, orchestras, improvisation workshops in public spaces, musical creation, and folk songs are some examples of featured projects.

 CHORAL ACADÉMIQUE FESTIVAL THE ODYSSEYS, WITH SONIA WIEDER-ATHERTHON The Festival d’Aix is a partner with the Choral Académique Festival, an educational programme of the Rectorate of the Académie of Aix-Marseille since 2015. With her Odyssey for a cello and an imaginary choir (2012), cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherthon has initiated a series of original works which combines a reflection on sound and a study into the origins of classical and contemporary music. To accompany her on this imaginary and musical journey, she has invited a choir of secondary school and high-school students from the Académie of Aix-Marseille. Accompanied by choirmaster Philippe Franceschi, they will contribute to Sonia Wieder-Atherton’s artistic research through their participation in improvisation workshops and the research of sound materials. Two performances are available to the public on 17 and 24 June 2017 (see P.19).

This project includes participants from educational institutions Marseille, Manosque and Aix, in partnership with the Darius Milhaud Conservatoire and the Conservatoire in Manosque.

 CREATIVE RESIDENCIES This year, Jazzman Raphaël Imbert and other artists committed to Passerelles offer new creative residencies open to school orchestras, youth and families. The projects developed in these workshops will form the subject of public performances called ”Dimanches de la Canebière” at the end of June 2017 and in several cities in the region.

 IBN ZAYDOUN MULTICULTURAL CHOIR Created in 2008 by the Festival d’Aix, the Ibn Zaydoun multicultural choir is composed of around 60 amateur choral singers from Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. It regularly performs in cultural venues or during intimate events organised by local associations of the PACA region. The choir will widen its repertoire this year and perform songs composed by the choir conductor, singer and ‘ud player Moneim Adwan, inspired by Egyptian poems by Bayram Al-Tounsi.

32 festival d’aix-en-provence 2017 Discovering opera: awareness-raising programmes

The Festival programme is a starting point for educational projects designed for different school classes and groups, built in partnership with teachers and social workers. Meetings are organised throughout the whole year, and allow participants to discover a specific operatic work in the programme. At the end of these courses, all participants are invited to a rehearsal of the opera that has been studied, or to a concert.

 CREATIVE WORKSHOPS Several workshops on voice and singing, visual arts, writing and philosophy allow participants to discover a work from the programme, and to share views about its themes and music. In 2017, the creative workshops will tackle the subjects of freedom, desire, personal development and interpersonal relationships

 «OPERA PROFESSIONS» SESSION Passerelles offers « Parcours Opera » to allow young people in professional development or technical and vocational training to discover a more detailed understanding of the skills behind theatre production. Through visits to set workshops (January to May 2017), meetings and interviews with theatre professionals such as costume supervisors, make-up artists, hair-dressers (March 2017), stage hands, lighting designers, and technical directors (April to June 2017), young people have unbridled acces to the Festival team’s structure and inner workings.

 EDUCATIONAL AND MUSICAL MEETINGS Organised in June and July 2017, these events consist of concerts where Festival artists and the Académie play in close proximity to the public. The aim is to bring opera to public spaces: educational institutions, hospitals and prison, etc. As well as this, throughout the year, relaying musicians and singers currently in training at the Académie meet with children and young people as part of training sessions and cultural mediation at the Académie (see p. 26).

 EDUCATIONAL SHOW Each year in spring, Passerelles offers a travelling educational show which tours in the cities and districts of the Aix-Marseille region. With the help of this show, children and their families can discover the profession of a lyrical artist.

 OPÉRA ON Opéra ON is an awareness program designed for youth aged 30 and under. After a simple registration, participants are invited to discover the opera and the Festival programme thanks to a series of free events between December and June (meetings, visits, screenings...). They also have the privilege of an exclusive but accessible night at the opera in July by benefiting from a special ticket price of only 9 ¤ for prime theatre seats (4 ¤ for Carte Culture of Aix-Marseille University holders). In 2017, 500 seats will be available as part of Opéra ON for the premieres of Pinocchio, The Rake’s Progress, Carmen and Don Giovanni.

33 festival d’aix-en-provence 2017  VOCAL PRACTICE ON CAMPUSES As part of the Opera ON programme, students of Aix-Marseille Université can participate in vocal practice workshops open to all, without any condition of level or regular attendance. For 2017, 16 workshops are organised on four different campuses.

Opera ON and the vocal practice workshops are supported by Aix-Marseille University as part of a three-year framework agreement signed in 2016. Each year, this agreement incorporates new offers and new partnerships with the diverse departments at the University, whose partnership identifies the Festival as a reference point for the academic world.

Exchange: forums, tools and networking around art education

To nourish their pedagogic practice, Passerelles offers nearly 400 educational and social partners committed in its projects several tools and meetings to engage in.

 INFO SESSION A two-day info-session related to the Festival’s programme is offered to teachers and partners from associations. At the beginning of the season, the session includes a presentation of the works performed, of the reflection workshops and of the artistic practice workshops.

 FORUMS Each summer, forums organised by partnering networks (including RESEO – European network for education, participation and learning in opera and dance, AFO – French Association of Orchestras, ROF – French operahouses group) are offered to local and European cultural and educational partners. The topic is linked to artistic, creative, and educational questions regarding performing arts.

 MONITORING TOOLS Passerelles is continually developing new tools for monitoring activities and always seeks to evaluate them with its partners to allow the evolution of the content and opportunities offered to the public.

 SHARING EXPERIENCE The Passerelles weblog and regular newsletters offer a unique online medium to allow people to share views and discuss the projects performed during the year

 MEDIATION TOOLS Passerelles not only develops educational guides explaining each production in the Festival’s programme, but also digital tools where opera and educational objectives can be best utilised for classes and participants.

The accesibility of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence benefits from the support of la Fondation d’entreprise Total, the Fondation CMA-CGM and the Fondation Crédit Cooperatif.
