    Modernity, Locality and the Performance of Emotion in Sufi Cults

    EMBODYING CHARISMA Emerging often suddenly and unpredictably, living Sufi saints practising in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are today shaping and reshaping a sacred landscape. By extending new Sufi brotherhoods and focused regional cults, they embody a lived sacred reality. This collection of essays from many of the subject’s leading researchers argues that the power of Sufi ritual derives not from beliefs as a set of abstracted ideas but rather from rituals as transformative and embodied aesthetic practices and ritual processes, Sufi cults reconstitute the sacred as a concrete emotional and as a dissenting tradition, they embody politically potent postcolonial counternarrative. The book therefore challenges previous opposites, up until now used as a tool for analysis, such as magic versus religion, ritual versus mystical belief, body versus mind and syncretic practice versus Islamic orthodoxy, by highlighting the connections between Sufi cosmologies, ethical ideas and bodily ritual practices. With its wide-ranging historical analysis as well as its contemporary research, this collection of case studies is an essential addition to courses on ritual and religion in sociology, anthropology and Islamic or South Asian studies. Its ethnographically rich and vividly written narratives reveal the important contributions that the analysis of Sufism can make to a wider theory of religious movements and charismatic ritual in the context of late twentieth-century modernity and postcoloniality. Pnina Werbner is Reader in Social Anthropology at Keele University. She has published on Sufism as a transnational cult and has a growing reputation among Islamic scholars for her work on the political imaginaries of British Islam. Helene Basu teaches Social Anthropology at the Institut für Ethnologie in Berlin.

    Annual Report 2015-2016 1. MISSION STATEMENT National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) started its academic and administrative operations during IX Plan w.e.f. 01.04.1996. NCPUL was declared a national Nodal Agency for promotion of Urdu in the country and recognized as an important autonomous organization of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India devoted to promotion of Urdu language and mainstreaming of Urdu education. NCPUL has been given the role of networking of Urdu organizations throughout the country so as the policies of the Government could be implemented in all Urdu speaking areas of the country. For past few years NCPUL has emerged as an effective coordination mechanism for promotion of Urdu language and Urdu medium education in India. During the course of discharging its responsibilities, NCPUL has been assigned the additional responsibility of promotion of Arabic & Persian languages which have played an important role in the development of composite culture of India. The broad goals of the Council are as under:- 1) To promote, develop and propagate Urdu language. 2) To take action for making available in Urdu language, the knowledge of scientific and technological development as well as knowledge of ideas evolved in the modern context. 3) To advise the Government of India on issues connected with Urdu language and having bearing on education as may be referred to it. 4) To undertake any other activity for the promotion of Urdu language as may be deemed fit by the Council. 2.     Citizens Against Hate (CAH) is a collective of individuals and groups committed to a democratic, secular and caring India. It is an open collective, with members drawn from a wide range of backgrounds who are concerned about the growing hold of exclusionary tendencies in society, and the weakening of the rule of law. CAH was formed in 2017, in response to the rising trend of hate and vigilante violence, to document violations, provide support to survivors, and engage with institutions for improved justice and policy reforms. Since then, we have also worked on other forms of violations –hate speech, sexual violence and state violence, and citizenship rights among others in Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Kashmir, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Our approach to addressing the justice challenge facing particularly vulnerable communities is through research, outreach and advocacy; and to provide practical to survivors in their struggles, also helping them to become agents of change. In this century Muslim regime came to an end and British dominion was firmly established in Bengal. Many scholars have done commendable research on various aspects and brought out many valuable works on this century. But aspects like Contribution of Bengal to Islamic Studies during eighteenth century have not been properly explored. The purpose of this study is to find out the nature and roots of Islamic learning in Bengal, the institutions and scholars of Bengal. The thesis has been divided into five chapters and an Introduction and a Conclusion. The chapters are as given below :- Chapter I Section I - Early Muslim Contact with Bengal. Section II - Socio-political Contact of Muslims with Bengal. Chapter II - Religious Institutions of Bengal in the eighteenth century. • Chapter III- The Sufis of the eighteenth century. Chapter IV - Arabic and Persian Literature in Bengal during eighteenth century. Chapter V - Contribution of Muslims to Bengali Literature during eighteenth century.
