the neededitorial to communicate

It would be doing an injustice to all the clubs and players involved in matches over the summer months to say that the new UEFA club competition season kicks off with the draws in Monaco. This gathering in Monaco is, however, an important occasion, and certainly more so than ever this year since it coincided with the inaugural plenary assembly of the European Club Forum. This platform, set up so as to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the clubs, reflects UEFA’s general desire to keep its finger on the pulse of football and to listen to all its various voices. Certainly in the dynamic and fast changing environments of modern football, the UEFA Executive Committee sometimes has to take major decisions at a rapid pace. In order to do so, it needs to be aware of the ideas, needs and concerns of the European football family as a whole so that, when the time comes, it can decide on the basis of a thorough knowledge of the issues and take account of the general interests of European football. UEFA has made steps in recent times to move onto a new footing with the establishment of Congresses on an annual basis for the member associations and by improving general consultation with the football family. It was in this spirit that the Club Forum was instituted, and this channel is paralleled by other opportunities for dialogue such as the Elite Coaches’ Forum held recently in Nyon, the regular meetings with the leagues and the meeting that will take place in September and October between the UEFA management and the general secretaries of the 52 member associations. Through these and others means, UEFA tries to ensure that many voices are heard and that decisions are taken with the best possible information. Of course, we must never forget that the final focus must be on the field, Internazionale FC and with the start of the next phase of the European club competitions and the (Roberto Vieri) are competing in the first qualifying matches for EURO 2004 we all have so much to look forward to. group stage of the UEFA Champions I hope that the new season will be a fruitful one for everyone involved in League this season. the game and that it will be exemplary in terms of fair play and great football.
