There is no doubt that the careful way in which the UEFA Champions League has been promoted has had a significant impact on its success. Thanks to its distinctive identity, the use of the same visual effect in all the stadiums, a strict marketing concept and quality broadcasting, the UEFA Champions League has established itself as a prime example in the world of sport. This season, the competition has a new format and we have also decided to strengthen its public image. For this purpose, we are introducing enhanced branding and a new consumer magazine, “Champions”, through which football fans throughout Europe can find out more about the competition and all those involved in it. Our new media experts are also strengthening the presence of the UEFA Champions League via the uefa.com website. -

However, the launch of this competition format for did have a few side effects. By concentrating the top clubs the UEFA Cup. in one competition, it diminished somewhat the appeal of the other UEFA competitions. A first measure to combat this devaluation was the merger of the UEFA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup, to create a revamped second European club competition. More recently concern about the amount of football played and the balance in the club competitions, allied to a downturn in the market, led us to re-examine those com- petitions. -

Next it will be the turn of the youth players in both the men’s (Under-17 and Under-19) and women’s categories (Under-19) to compete for European honours from May to July, when the final rounds of their European champion- ships will be taking place. At senior level, however, the players only have European club competition medals to contend for this year. The national teams are not dormant though. At the end of March, the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifiers move into their criti- cal phase and, come autumn, the 15 teams who will join hosts Portugal in the final round next year will be known. There could be a lot of drama to come. I am happy to report that with UEFA EURO 2004 only 15 months away, preparations are well advanced, and EURO 2004, SA, the joint operation set up by UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation, is running at full speed. -

What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims. -

The past two years have therefore been a rather intense period, as UEFA has had to implement the new structures while at the same time addressing current football issues and launching new projects. Both these tasks were far-reaching and voluminous. Among other challenges, UEFA had to help find a solution to the issue of international transfers, cope with the complex demands of organising competitions, define the format for the club competitions and defend the centralised marketing of the rights to the UEFA Champions League. In terms of projects, we launched the club licensing system, created our subsidiary UEFA New Media, set up a new structure for marketing opera- tions and moved forward with our study aimed at allowing the use of artificial-turf surfaces in UEFA competitions. Details of all these processes and projects are to be found The UEFA in my two-yearly report to the Congress. -

The New Football Business: a Challenge for Elite Followers
International Business Master Thesis No 2000:18 The New Football Business: a challenge for elite followers. -A CASE STUDY FOR IFK GÖTEBORG- Monica Marquez & Heliodoro Martin Graduate Business School School of Economics and Commercial Law Göteborg University ISSN 1403-851X Printed by Novum Grafiska ABSTRACT A decade ago, as the 1990’s opened, many small tentative steps were ventured into the new (at that time) business age. Which of football’s leaders could then have foreseen the sheer scale and speed of football’s economic revolution? Associated industries such as media, sportswear, advertising, and so forth have seen football as an attractive business and thus many off-the-field developments have speeded up its expansion. On the other hand, some sensible and regulative issues are threatening the traditional structure of European football. The change in the international transfer system, the continuous threat of a Super League, the discussion about regional leagues and the supremacy of UEFA as the single governing body are important matters that have to be handled carefully. The situation has become almost dramatic at the European level. Most of the participants are now swept along, whereas very few can claim to be in control. To have a chance within an era of stock market flotation, corporate takeovers and digital television, it is needed a defined strategy, a clear focus, top class people, financial resources and some luck! In this thesis we analyse how football is changing nowadays and which forces are pushing the industry to another direction at the clubs’ level. The question here is to see to what extent the “golden era” for football – with colossal sums of money entering the game through TV deals, sponsorship contracts, etc. -
