AOL Arena, Thursday, 3 November 2005 - 18:30 local time Group A - Matchday 2

Something has to give at the AOL Arena as the two Group A winners from Matchday 1 meet looking to maintain perfect starts. Hamburger SV won their opening game 1-0 at PFC CSKA Sofia thanks to a goal, while Viking FK secured a fine home win against the 2004 UEFA Champions League finalists AS FC, Nkosinathi Nhleko scoring the only goal in another 1-0 success.

•Despite beginning their European adventure in the 1960/61 season, Hamburg now face Norwegian opposition for the first time. The club (who qualified for this competition as one of the three UEFA Intertoto Cup winners along with RC Lens and ), are looking to complete a quartet of European trophies.

•Hamburg have also won the 1976/77 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

•However, they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest FC in the 1979/80 European Cup final and lost 2-0 to AC Milan in the 1967/68 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. The German side completed a hat-trick of losing major finals when they lost to IFK Göteborg in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup final, 4-0 on aggregate. •Viking have met German clubs in five previous ties in UEFA competition, and have come out on top only once, against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, now VfB Leipzig but then of the East German league, with a win on away goals in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round. Viking won the home leg 1-0 before going down 3-2 away. •The four aggregate defeats suffered by Viking at the hands of Bundesliga clubs began in 1972/73 when the Norwegian club were paired with 1. FC Köln in the UEFA Cup second round. Viking won 1-0 at home, but Köln dominated the return leg - Johannes Löhr scoring five times in a 9-1 romp.

•Viking then lost to eventual finalists VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 on aggregate in the first round of the 1979/80 UEFA Cup, and to Werder on away goals after a 2-2 draw on aggregate in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup second round.

•The last meeting with German opposition was in the second round of the 2001/02 UEFA Cup against Hertha BSC Berlin. Michael Preetz gave Hertha a first-leg win at the Stavanger stadion, before Alex Alves and Eyjölfur Sverrisson scored in for a 3- 0 aggregate victory.

Team facts: Hamburg •This is Hamburg's third successive appearance in UEFA competition. Their best sequence came from 1979/80 to 1985/86, a period which included a 1-0 victory in the

1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against Juventus FC. •Of all their matches in European competition, 24 have come in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Croatian side NK Slaven Koprivnica hold the record as all of their 34 matches in UEFA competition have come in the Intertoto Cup. Second are with 28 matches with Hamburg and VfL Wolfsburg joint third. •Hamburg were also involved in the Intertoto Cup in 2004, reaching the semi-final stage before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Villarreal CF, both matches finishing 1-0. Earlier in the competition, Hamburg accounted for Swiss side FC Thun 5-3 on aggregate.

•Excluding two UEFA Super Cup appearances, Hamburg have competed in five UEFA club competition finals, winning two and losing three. Their most recent success came in the 1982/83 European Cup final where Magath's eighth-minute goal proved sufficient to defeat Juventus in Athens. Their other success came six years previous in the 1976/77 Cup Winners' Cup final against RSC Anderlecht. Magath was again on the scoresheet, this time scoring the second goal in the 90th minute after Georg Volkert's opener ten minutes earlier. Their final defeats came in the 1967/68 Cup Winners' Cup, a 2-0 loss to AC Milan, the 1979/80 European Cup, won 1-0 by Nottingham Forest FC, and the 1981/82 UEFA Cup, which IFK Göteborg won 4-0 on aggregate.

•Hamburg finished in eighth position in the Bundesliga in 2004/05, good enough for them to compete in the 2005 Intertoto Cup as one of Germany's three representatives. •The German side entered the Intertoto Cup in the second round, meaning that their first game in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage will be their eleventh match this season in UEFA competition.

•FK Pobeda, UD Leiria, SK Sigma Olomouc and Valencia CF provided Hamburg's opposition in the Intertoto Cup, with the German club winning seven of their eight matches and drawing the other – the second leg of their final meeting away to Valencia. In total, Hamburg scored 16 goals and conceded only twice.

•The Intertoto Cup final against Valencia was the closest of all their four ties as 's 50th-minute first-leg goal was all that separated the two sides after 180 minutes of football. •Hamburg's reward was a UEFA Cup first round engagement against Danish side FC København. The first leg ended 1-1 at the AOL Arena with Rafael van der Vaart scoring for the German side after 37 minutes, only for Elrio van Heerden to reply three minutes later. Hamburg left it late in Danish capital, Van der Vaart's 89th-minute penalty allowing the visitors to book their place in the group stage. •A single goal from Rafael van der Vaart steered Hamburg to victory against PFC CSKA Sofia in the opening matchday of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage. The Bundesliga outfit took three points from the Bulgarian capital thanks to a sumptuous long-range strike from the Dutch midfielder just short of the hour.

•Prior to Matchday 2 of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Hamburg had played 170

matches in UEFA competition. Overall, the German side have won 87, drawn 36 and lost 47 matches with 309 goals scored against 196 conceded. In the UEFA Cup alone, they have played 73 matches with 35 wins, 14 draws and 24 defeats in which 121 goals have been scored with 87 conceded.

Team facts: Viking •This season, Viking are making their first European appearance since the 2002/03 season. •Viking are participating in their 18th season of UEFA competition following their debut in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup.

•Viking's last appearance in UEFA competition came in second round of 2002/03 UEFA Cup when they lost 4-1 on aggregate to RC Celta de Vigo having defeated Chelsea FC 5-4 on aggregate in the first round. Peter Kopteff, still playing for Viking, scored one of the goals, with John Terry, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink among Chelsea's goalscorers.

•They last played in the European Cup in 1992/93 when they lost 1-0 on aggregate to FC Barcelona in the first round. Since then have exclusively featured in the UCUP; this is their sixth appearance in the competition since 1995/96.

•Viking have advanced to the UEFA Cup second round on five occasions, but never further. They came closest in 1999/00 season when they lost on away goals against Werder Bremen, drawing 0-0 away before being held 2-2 at home. Bjørn Berland gave Viking the lead after three minutes, but goals from Andre Wiedener and Andreas Herzog put Bremen in control before Rikhardur Dadason levelled for the Norwegian team.

•Viking entered the first qualifying round as one of the three Fair Play winners. They defeated Portadown FC 3-1 on aggregate, before beating Rhyl FC by the same margin in the second qualifying round – winning all four matches against both sides. South African striker Nkosinathi Nhleko scored three times with Finnish international midfield player contributing Peter Kopteff two goals. •The Norwegian side then overcame FK Wien in the first round, advancing on away goals following a 2-2 aggregate draw. Viking won the first leg at home thanks to Robert Mambo Mumba's 71st-minute goal. They then lost 2-1 in having taken the lead through Trygve Nygaard's 12th-minute goal. Austria hit back through Sigurd Rushfeldt (21) and Andreas Lasnik (47), but it was not enough for the team that reached the quarter-finals in 2004/05. •Nkosinathi Nhleko scored the only goal as Viking’s UEFA Cup adventure continued with a home victory against AS Monaco FC on the opening matchday of the 2005/06 group stage. The South African striker turned in Thomas Pereira's cross in the 18th minute to give the Norwegian side the victory. Monaco, the 2004 UEFA Champions League runners-up, were frustrated by Viking goalkeeper Anthony Basso throughout, although substitute David Gigliotti almost salvaged an equaliser when he struck a post

in added time. •Prior to Matchday 2 of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Viking had played 59 matches in UEFA competition. In that time, the Stavanger-based club have won 20, drawn 13 and lost 26 times with 75 goals scored against 86 conceded.

Domestic news Weekend joy boosts rivals' confidence (Monday, 31 October 2005) Confidence will not be a problem for the sides in UEFA Cup Group A going into Matchday 2 after Hamburger SV, Viking FK, PFC CSKA Sofia and AS Monaco all enjoyed victories at the weekend. SK Slavia Praha were not so fortunate, though, suffering defeat at the Czech top-flight's bottom club, 1. FC Brno, on Monday.

Hamburger SV 1–0 FC Schalke 04 Hamburg rounded off a successful week with a home victory against Schalke on Saturday, Iranian midfielder Mehdi Mahdavikia scoring the only goal on 19 minutes. Hamburg remained third in the Bundesliga, four points behind FC Bayern München and two adrift of Werder Bremen despite being without Rafael van der Vaart (suspended), Guy Demel (ankle and suspension) and Bastian Reinhardt (thigh). Van der Vaart was, however, a key figure in Hamburg's 3-2 victory against Bayer 04 in the second round of the German Cup on Tuesday night, the Dutch international's free-kick creating a late winner for Swiss midfielder Raphael Wicky.

"I want to compliment my players on another great performance," said Hamburg coach Thomas Doll after watching his side defeat Schalke. "We controlled the match in the first half and created a string of chances. Sadly we lost our way a bit when Schalke went down to ten men [after was sent off] and we failed to kill the match off by scoring the second goal. None the less we took three very important points today."

Viking FK 3-0 Ålesunds FK Viking clinched fifth place in the Norwegian Tippeligaen with a comfortable win against Aalesund, who were relegated as a result of the defeat. Danish midfielder Allan Gaarde opened the scoring on 20 minutes, slotting in from close range after a nice cross from Peter Kopteff. Robert Mambo Mumba doubled the lead 14 minutes later, latching on to Egil Østenstad's flick. In his last league game before hanging up his boots, Østenstad rounded off his domestic career in perfect fashion by adding the third in added time, tapping in after Allan Borgvardt had unselfishly square when clean through.

"This was a good win after we hadn't won for five league games," said Viking coach Roy Hodgson, whose first-choice goalkeeper Anthony Basso was suspended but is expected to return in time for the trip to Hamburg, although Fredric Lundqvist (heel) and Peter Kovacs (cruciate ligament) remain injured. "We took our chances this time, something we have struggled with lately. This should give us confidence ahead of the game in Hamburg." 1. FC Brno 1-0 SK Slavia Praha

Having rested all of his regular players with the exception of Matej Krajcík and Tomáš Hrdlička for Wednesday's Czech Cup victory against seconddivision TJ Vítkovice (defender Karel Kratochvíl settling the tie in style with his firstever goal for Sparta, a

sumptuous overheadkick), coach Karel Jarolím welcomed back his key performers for Monday's trip to Brno, including Karel Piták after a threegame suspension and Michal Švec following a longterm injury absence, although Krajcík was suspended.

Still, that was not enough to prevent Brno, bottom of the First Division, from recording their first league victory of the season at the eleventh attempt. Pavel Mezlík's goal in the third minute ended Slavia's sixgame unbeaten run, although the visitors twice saw attempts on goal cleared off the line. "Again we conceded a soft goal in the opening minutes which proved to be decisive," was Jarolím's verdict. Patrik Gedeon and Césareo Victorino are both sidelined with knee injuries. Bulgarian international Valentin Iliev is a doubt for CSKA Sofia’s trip to Prague on Thursday after damaging his ankle during his side's 30 win over PFC Cherno More Varna. The victory on Saturday, thanks to goals from Emil Gargorov, Yordan Yurukov and Velizar Dimitrov, extended CSKA Sofia’s unbeaten start to the league season to ten games and put them four points clear at the top.

"I am not happy despite the win as we lost another first team player," said coach Miodrag Jesic afterwards. "We will wait for the medical tests and can only hope that Iliev will recover in time". The loss of the defender was the club’s second blow in the space of three days after midfielder Mourad Hdiouad suffered a thigh injury during the 43 league win over PFC Lokomotiv 1936 last Wednesday. The Moroccan will be sidelined for at least six weeks.

AS Monaco FC 3–0 AC Ajaccio

For the second successive home game in Ligue 1 since Francesco Guidolin became coach, Monaco turned in a 30 victory. After the win over FC two weeks ago this Saturday they defeated AC Ajaccio, getting their first goal in the first half of a league game this season in the process. Ernesto Chevantón’s 38th minute strike was later added to by Gaël Givet and Jaroslav Plašil as Monaco moved up to sixth in the table. "It was our best game since I took charge," Guidolin said afterwards. The Italian will be grateful his team are not involved on Matchday 2 however, such are the injury problems he currently faces. Flavio Roma (groin), Patrice Evra (eye), Sébastien Squilaci (thigh), Eric Cubilier (knee), Olivier Kapo (ankle) and Emmanuel Adebayor (groin) all missed the game at the weekend. Meanwhile, Monaco secured their place in the last 16 of the French League Cup with a 10 midweek win over Ligue 2 side Dijon FCO.
