Hamburger SV won their opening game 1-0 at PFC CSKA Sofia thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart goal, while Viking FK secured a fine home win against the 2004 UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco FC, Nkosinathi Nhleko scoring the only goal in another 1-0 success. •Despite beginning their European adventure in the 1960/61 season, Hamburg now face Norwegian opposition for the first time. The Bundesliga club (who qualified for this competition as one of the three UEFA Intertoto Cup winners along with RC Lens and Olympique de Marseille), are looking to complete a quartet of European trophies. •Hamburg have also won the 1976/77 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup. •However, they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest FC in the 1979/80 European Cup final and lost 2-0 to AC Milan in the 1967/68 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. Viking won the home leg 1-0 before going down 3-2 away. •The four aggregate defeats suffered by Viking at the hands of Bundesliga clubs began in 1972/73 when the Norwegian club were paired with 1. FC Köln in the UEFA Cup second round. Viking won 1-0 at home, but Köln dominated the return leg - Johannes Löhr scoring five times in a 9-1 romp. •Viking then lost to eventual finalists VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 on aggregate in the first round of the 1979/80 UEFA Cup, and to Werder Bremen on away goals after a 2-2 draw on aggregate in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup second round. •The last meeting with German opposition was in the second round of the 2001/02 UEFA Cup against Hertha BSC Berlin. Michael Preetz gave Hertha a first-leg win at the Stavanger stadion, before Alex Alves and Eyjölfur Sverrisson scored in Germany for a 3- 0 aggregate victory. Since then have exclusively featured in the UCUP; this is their sixth appearance in the competition since 1995/96. •Viking have advanced to the UEFA Cup second round on five occasions, but never further.
