Visitas `ascole¸c~oesinternacionais foram parcialmente custeadas pelo \All Catfish Species Inventory" (NSF DEB- 0315963). iii Resumo As esp´eciesda subfam´ıliaAstrodoradinae foram revisadas e uma an´alisefilogen´etica conduzida. Foram reconhecidas 21 esp´eciesdistribu´ıdasem sete g^eneros. Acanthodoras e Agamyxis, outrora considerados pr´oximosa Platydoras, est~aoinclu´ıdosem Astrodoradinae. Anadoras regani foi considerado sin^onimoj´uniorde A. weddellii e uma nova esp´ecie´edes- crita do alto Araguaia. Os g^eneros Merodoras e Physopyxis foram considerados sin^onimos de Amblydoras, que passa a ter seis esp´eciesv´alidas: A. affinis, A. ananas, A. bolivarensis, A. cristatus, A. lyra e A. nheco. Duas novas esp´eciesde Astrodoras s~aoreconhecidas, ocor- rendo sintopicamente com A. asterifrons em alguns lugares da bacia amaz^onica. Scorpiodo- ras calderonensis ´erevalidado e sua localidade tipo elucidada, revelando-se ser Tabatinga. Al´emdisso, uma nova esp´eciede Scorpiodoras foi descrita no m´ediorio Madeira. A an´aliseclad´ısticafoi feita com base em 101 caracteres codificados para 28 t´axons, resultando em uma ´unica´arvore mais parcimoniosa com 279 passos. O monofiletismo de Astrodoradinae foi sustentado por sete sinapomorfias n~aoexclusivas: fontanela cra- niana anterior oval ou circular, n´umero reduzido de costelas (oito ou menos), corac´oide n~aocoberto completamente por musculatura ventral, n´umeroreduzido de v´ertebras(34 ou menos), para-hipural fusionado aos hipurais 1 e 2, infra-orbital 1 participando da ´orbita e terceiro escudo timp^anicoexpandido. Anadoras ´econsiderado o g^eneromais basal de Astrodoradinae, seguido por (Acanthodoras + Agamyxis)(Amblydoras (Scorpiodoras (Hy- podoras + Astrodoras))). iv Abstract The species of the subfamily Astrodoradinae was revised and a phylogenetic analy- sis performed. Twenty-one species, belonging to seven genera, are recognized as valid. Acanthodoras and Agamyxis, formely considered to be related to Platydoras, are included into Astrodoradinae. Anadoras regani is considered as a junior synonym of A. weddellii and a new species is described from the upper Araguaia. The genera Merodoras and Phy- sopyxis are placed in synonym with Amblydoras, which has six valid species: A. affinis, A. ananas, A. bolivarensis, A. cristatus, A. lyra and A. nheco. Two new species of Astrodoras are described and occur syntopically in some places in the Amazon basin. Scorpiodoras calderonensis is reerected and its type locality elucidated as Tabatinga. Furthermore, a new species of Scorpiodoras is discribed from the middle rio Madeira. The cladistic analysis was performed based on 101 characters coded for 28 taxa and resulted in a single most parcimonious tree with 279 steps. The monophyly of Astrodora- dinae is supported by seven non-exclusive synapomorphies: anterior cranial fontanel oval or circular, reduced number of ribs (eigth or less), ventral face of coracoid not completely covered by muscles, reduced number of vertebrae (34 or less), parhypural fused to hipural 1 and 2, infra-orbital 1 participating of orbit and third tympanic scute expanded. That one special species that just strikes a chord with you that you want to keep no matter what? Perhaps something that you have kept every time the opportunity presents? I think we all have a small group of species that no matter how unattractive other aquarists may find them, we want to keep them. I think you all know by now my absolute fascination with rainbowfish, and the extent that I am willing to go to obtain certain species. Given that, you might be surprised to know that my “soft-spot species” isn’t a rainbowfish, but rather a catfish, specifically the White-Spotted Doradid, Agamyxis pectinifrons. (Or it actually might be… but I’ll get to that in a bit.) Agamyxis pectinifrons is a member of the Doradidae family.

Nong1 and Noriyuki Satoh2* Abstract Background: The striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, is a freshwater and benthopelagic fish common in the Mekong River delta. Catfish constitute a valuable source of dietary protein. Therefore, they are cultured worldwide, and P. hypophthalmus is a food staple in the Mekong area. However, genetic information about the culture stock, is unavailable for breeding improvement, although genetics of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, has been reported. Toacquiregenomesequencedataasausefulresourcefor marker-assisted breeding, we decoded a draft genome of P. hypophthalmus and performed comparative analyses. Results: Using the Illumina platform, we obtained both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. Molecular phylogeny using the mitochondrial genome confirmed that P. hypophthalmus is a member of the family Pangasiidae and is nested within a clade including the families Cranoglanididae and Ictaluridae. The nuclear genome was estimated at approximately 700 Mb, assembled into 568 scaffolds with an N50 of 14.29 Mbp, and was estimated to contain ~ 28,600 protein-coding genes, comparable to those of channel catfish and zebrafish. Interestingly, zebrafish produce gadusol, but genes for biosynthesis of this sunscreen compound have been lost from catfish genomes.

    Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. O. Birindelli A phylogenetic analysis based on 311 morphological characters is presented for most species of the Doradidae, all genera of the Auchenipteridae, and representatives of 16 other catfish families. The hypothesis that was derived from the six most parsimonious trees support the monophyly of the South American Doradoidea (Doradidae plus Auchenipteridae), as well as the monophyly of the clade Doradoidea plus the African Mochokidae. In addition, the clade with Sisoroidea plus Aspredinidae was considered sister to Doradoidea plus Mochokidae. Within the Auchenipteridae, the results support the monophyly of the Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. The latter is composed of Tocantinsia, and four monophyletic units, two small with Asterophysus and Liosomadoras, and Pseudotatia and Pseudauchenipterus, respectively, and two large ones with the remaining genera. Within the Doradidae, parsimony analysis recovered Wertheimeria as sister to Kalyptodoras, composing a clade sister to all remaining doradids, which include Franciscodoras and two monophyletic groups: Astrodoradinae (plus Acanthodoras and Agamyxis) and Doradinae (new arrangement). Wertheimerinae, new subfamily, is described for Kalyptodoras and Wertheimeria. Doradinae is corroborated as monophyletic and composed of four groups, one including Centrochir and Platydoras, the other with the large-size species of doradids (except Oxydoras), another with Orinocodoras, Rhinodoras, and Rhynchodoras, and another with Oxydoras plus all the fimbriate-barbel doradids. Based on the results, the species of Opsodoras are included in Hemidoras; and Tenellus, new genus, is described to include Nemadoras trimaculatus, N.

RINGUELET SUMMARY: The zoogeography and ecology of fresh water fishes from Argentina and comments on ichthyogeography of South America. This study comprises a critical review of relevant literature on the fish fauna, genocentres, means of dispersal, barriers, ecological groups, coactions, and ecological causality of distribution, including an analysis of allotopic species in the lame lake or pond, the application of indexes of diversity of severa¡ biotopes and comments on historical factors. Its wide scope allows to clarify several aspects of South American Ichthyogeography. The location of Argentina ichthyological fauna according to the above mentioned distributional scheme as well as its relation with the most important hydrography systems are also provided, followed by additional information on its distribution in the Argentine Republic, including an analysis through the application of Simpson's similitude test in several localities. VertNet (2018) reports an occurrence in May 2002 in New Mexico: “Caught 15 May 2002 by Frank Jimenez of Tesuque […] at Santa Cruz Lake, Santa Fe Co. with a net as it was swimming near shoreline.” The frequency of this species in trade is unclear (see Remarks).
