More importantly, fish are one of the most important sources of protein for the human kind. Efforts at all levels have been made to increase fish production and, undoubtedly, the biology of fish, especially the biology of unknown species, has much to contribute. As we prepare this brief introduction to the “Advances in Fish Biology Symposium,” we are including 48 oral and poster papers on a diverse range of species, covering a number of topics. From the description of new tropical fish species to the hardy nature of fish species of the Amazon, from the chromatic organization of the retina of salmon to the relationship between flood pulse and fish biology in the Pantanal, from fish as environmental biomarkers to pain perception in fish, this symposium is a “voyage” across the world of fish biology. The contributions are stimulating and we sincerely wish to thank all the investigators who contributed to this symposium. We hope that your participation result in new insights and new approaches of fish biology and so contribute to the advancement of this central theme of our lives. We wish that all contributors and participants have a productive meeting. Ten years have passed since the first meeting in this series was held in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Subsequent meetings were in San Francisco, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Aberdeen, Scotland; and again in Vancouver, Canada. From those meetings, colleagues from over 30 countries have contributed more than 2,500 papers to the Proceedings of over 80 Congress Symposia, all available for free viewing on the internet. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many people who helped us organize the facilities and program for this 6th Congress. The local arrangements team worked very hard to make this Congress a success. The leaders of those efforts were Vera Almeida Val, Adriana Chippari-Gomes, Nivia Pires Lopes and Maria de Nazare Paula Silva (Local Arrangements); Marcelo Perlingeiro (Executive Secretary) and Maria Angelica Laredo (Fund Raising). From June 2006 to December 2007. Fishes (n=307) belonging to four species were collected, including 23 specimens of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (redeye tetra), 37 Carnegiella strigata (marbled hatchetfish), 7 Chilodus punctatus (spotted headstander), and 240 Astyanax bimaculatus (twospot astyanax). The parasites found belonged to three taxa: monogeneans in the gills, nematodes (larvae of Capillaria sp. and Contracaecum sp.) in the digestive tract and liver and acanthocephalans (Quadrigyrus torquatus, Q. brasiliensis and Q. nickoli) in the stomach and intestine. Astyanax bimaculatus presented higher prevalence of acanthocephalans in the wet season, and lower prevalence of nematodes in the dry season.

The composition, phylogeny, and classification of Characidae is currently uncertain, despite significant efforts based on analysis of morphological and molecular data. No consensus about the monophyly of this group or its position within the order Characiformes has been reached, challenged by the fact that many key studies to date have non-overlapping taxonomic representation and focus only on subsets of this diversity. Results: In the present study we propose a new definition of the family Characidae and a hypothesis of relationships for the Characiformes based on phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes (4,680 base pairs). The sequences were obtained from 211 samples representing 166 genera distributed among all 18 recognized families in the order Characiformes, all 14 recognized subfamilies in the Characidae, plus 56 of the genera so far considered incertae sedis in the Characidae. The phylogeny obtained is robust, with most lineages significantly supported by posterior probabilities in Bayesian analysis, and high bootstrap values from maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses.

O. Birindelli A phylogenetic analysis based on 311 morphological characters is presented for most species of the Doradidae, all genera of the Auchenipteridae, and representatives of 16 other catfish families. The hypothesis that was derived from the six most parsimonious trees support the monophyly of the South American Doradoidea (Doradidae plus Auchenipteridae), as well as the monophyly of the clade Doradoidea plus the African Mochokidae. In addition, the clade with Sisoroidea plus Aspredinidae was considered sister to Doradoidea plus Mochokidae. Within the Auchenipteridae, the results support the monophyly of the Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. The latter is composed of Tocantinsia, and four monophyletic units, two small with Asterophysus and Liosomadoras, and Pseudotatia and Pseudauchenipterus, respectively, and two large ones with the remaining genera. Within the Doradidae, parsimony analysis recovered Wertheimeria as sister to Kalyptodoras, composing a clade sister to all remaining doradids, which include Franciscodoras and two monophyletic groups: Astrodoradinae (plus Acanthodoras and Agamyxis) and Doradinae (new arrangement). Wertheimerinae, new subfamily, is described for Kalyptodoras and Wertheimeria. Doradinae is corroborated as monophyletic and composed of four groups, one including Centrochir and Platydoras, the other with the large-size species of doradids (except Oxydoras), another with Orinocodoras, Rhinodoras, and Rhynchodoras, and another with Oxydoras plus all the fimbriate-barbel doradids. Based on the results, the species of Opsodoras are included in Hemidoras; and Tenellus, new genus, is described to include Nemadoras trimaculatus, N.

This study comprises a critical review of relevant literature on the fish fauna, genocentres, means of dispersal, barriers, ecological groups, coactions, and ecological causality of distribution, including an analysis of allotopic species in the lame lake or pond, the application of indexes of diversity of severa¡ biotopes and comments on historical factors. Its wide scope allows to clarify several aspects of South American Ichthyogeography. The location of Argentina ichthyological fauna according to the above mentioned distributional scheme as well as its relation with the most important hydrography systems are also provided, followed by additional information on its distribution in the Argentine Republic, including an analysis through the application of Simpson's similitude test in several localities. Here we apply DNA barcoding and multiple species discovery methods to find candidate species in this complex group. We report on one well-supported lineage that is also morphologically and ecologically distinct. This lineage represents a new species that can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of dark chromatophores on lateral-line scales, which gives the appearance of a black lateral line. It can be further diagnosed by having 25–29 branched dorsal-fin rays (vs. 18–24), 89–114 perforated scales from the supracleithrum to the end of hypural plate (vs. 56–89), and 98–120 total lateral line scales (vs. 59–97). The new species is widely distributed in the Amazon basin, but seems to have a preference for black- and clearwater habitats. Only a few vertebrate groups such as the Heroine cichlids, distributed from South America to the Rio Grande in North America, are found both north and south of the Neovolcanic Plateau. To better understand the geography and temporal diversification of cichlids at this geologic boundary, we used mitochondrial DNA sequences of the cy- tochrome b (cyt b) gene to reconstruct the relationships of 52 of the approximately 80 species of Heroine cichlids in Mesoamerica. Our analysis suggests several cichlids in South America should be considered as part of the Mesoamerican Heroine clade because they and the cichlids north of the Isthmus of Panama are clearly supported as monophyletic with respect to all other Neotropical cichlids. We also recovered a group containing species in Paratheraps + Paraneetroplus + Vieja as the sister clade to Herichthys. Herichthys is the only cichlid clade north of the Mexican Plateau and it is monophyletic.
