Recently, a parish family approached us with a surprise they learned from their Tax Advisor – there are numerous ways to give to a parish with Tax Savings and benefits to both the donor and recipient (us). They were able to give $20,000 EXTRA to the parish with these provisions for tithing. As a result, they wanted to make sure everyone is aware of how this can be done! We agree! Here is a synopsis of how you can assist our parish ministries! As always, please consult your Tax Advisor for all the information – and hear from them the good news for YOU and US! Stock With the stock market regularly breaking records at the closing bell, many of your investments are likely worth more today than what you originally paid for them. Time to sell? If you do, you might have to pay capital gains taxes. There’s a better option that provides you with valuable tax incentives as well as the satisfaction of supporting a cause close to your heart: Give your stock to Holy Redeemer or St. Charles Borromeo! When you give either parish appreciated securities that you’ve owned for more than one year, you will receive two tax benefits: 1. You are entitled to a federal income tax deduction based on the current fair market value of the securities, regardless of their lower original cost. 2. You will be exempt from paying capital gains taxes on any increase in value—taxes you would pay if you sold the stock. Reap the Rewards! To realize full tax benefits from your gift, keep the following IRS guidelines in mind: 1. Donate long-term appreciated property. Tax Free Gift with an IRA • If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit either Holy Redeemer or St. Charles Borromeo and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money! This charitable gift option applies only to IRA and Roth IRA plans, not to other retirement plans such as 401(k), 403(b), pension, profit-sharing, Keogh, and employer-sponsored SEP IRAs and simple IRA plans. However, a donor may be able to roll assets tax-free from one of these plans to a traditional IRA, and then take advantage of the charitable rollover. Donors should be encouraged to consult their retirement plan administrator, or their tax or financial advisor to determine whether this option would be advantageous for each donor’s financial and tax circumstances. Why Consider This Gift? • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making. • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. • If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.
