A Study in Violin Pedagogy: Teaching Techniques from Selected Works by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Delerue Layne Vanderbeek This article is an outline and analysis of a few specific methods of composition used by the composers Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, and Georges Delerue for the purpose of reproducing the styles and techniques for an intermediate level violinist. This will be accomplished by gathering information concerning each composer and their style and then reproducing that style in an original composition at the intermediate level. Each composer will be dealt with in a section divided into several parts: relevant biographical and historical information, stylistic analysis, and methods employed to incorporate these stylistic characteristics into the intermediate level composition. The biographical and historical information will consist of pertinent historic, social, and political events that influenced compositional style and growth of each composer. Stylistic analysis will be based upon general historical information and analysis of the specific composition in consideration. Scalar resources, chord and harmony use, texture and rhythm will be discussed and illustrated. The incorporation of these stylistic elements into an intermediate level composition will be a direct conclusion to the previous section. The information gained in the stylistic analysis will be utilized in original intermediate compositions, and it will be illustrated how this is accomplished and how these twentieth-century techniques are being employed and incorporated. Within the section titled “Methods of Stylistic Incorporation,” portions of the intermediate compositions will be used to demonstrate aspects of the composers' styles that were included. Each complete intermediate composition will be placed at the end of each section to demonstrate the results of the analysis. -

Film Music Week 4 20Th Century Idioms - Jazz
Film Music Week 4 20th Century Idioms - Jazz alternative approaches to the romantic orchestra in 1950s (US & France) – with a special focus on jazz... 1950s It was not until the early 50’s that HW film scores solidly move into the 20th century (idiom). Alex North (influenced by : Bartok, Stravinsky) and Leonard Rosenman (influenced by: Schoenberg, and later, Ligeti) are important influences here. Also of note are Georges Antheil (The Plainsman, 1937) and David Raksin (Force of Evil, 1948). Prendergast suggests that in the 30’s & 40’s the films possessed somewhat operatic or unreal plots that didn’t lend themselves to dissonance or expressionistic ideas. As Hollywood moved towards more realistic portrayals, this music became more appropriate. Alex North, leader in a sparser style (as opposed to Korngold, Steiner, Newman) scored Death of a Salesman (image above)for Elia Kazan on Broadway – this led to North writing the Streetcar film score for Kazan. European influences Also Hollywood was beginning to be strongly influenced by European films which has much more adventuresome scores or (often) no scores at all. Guitarist Sharon Isbin to Star with Santa Rosa Symphony
Guitarist Sharon Isbin to star with Santa Rosa Symphony By DIANE PETERSON THE PRESS DEMOCRAT Published: Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 3:00 a.m. WWW.SHARONISBIN.COM/ J. HENRY FAIR Sharon Isbin serves as the American ambassador of the classical guitar, performing everywhere from the concert hall to the White House. It's a job that no one else really wanted. That's because most Americans are exposed to the guitar through rock and folk music and then fall in love with classical guitar by accident. “That's changing now, but that certainly has been part of the history of classical guitar in this country,” Isbin said in a phone interview from her home in New York City. “Europe has a much longer tradition of classical guitar, going back to Spain and Italy and the U.K., so that the roots have had time to blossom and flourish.” For the Santa Rosa Symphony's fourth concert set this weekend, Isbin will whisk the audience off to the gardens of Spain during a performance of Joaquin Rodrigo's passionate “Concierto de Aranjuez.” “The Rodrigo is one of the most popular works of any works for orchestra,” she said. “The second movement is so powerfully moving and emotionally raw, with great nuances and musical inspiration. It's something that really touches people in unusual ways.” Led by guest conductor and Mexico native Enrique Arturo Diemecke, the south-of-the- border program also includes Astor Piazzolla's seductive “Tangazo, Variations on Buenos Aires” and the Fourth Symphony of composer Carlos Chavez, considered to be the founder of modern Mexican music. -

With texts taken from Luther’s translation of the Bible and an emphasis on comforting the living for their loss and on hope of the Resurrection, the work is deeply rooted in the tradition of Bach and Schütz, but is vastly different in character from the Latin Requiem of Catholic tradition with its evocation of the Day of Judgement and prayers for mercy on the souls of the dead. The success of Marin Alsop as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was recognized when, in 2009, her tenure was extended to 2015. In 2012 she took up the post of Chief Conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, where she steers the orchestra in its artistic and creative programming, recording ventures and its education and outreach activities.
