FAIRWAY CARD UTÖ-LÖVSKÄR CHANNEL (10.0 M) 6.7.2021 CHANNEL DATA Alignment and buoyage: The Utö-Lövskär channel (10.0 m) starts at the Utö-Naantali channel N of Utö and continues from south to north between Nagu and Korpo towards Lövskär. The fairway ends W of Lövskär in the Utö-Naantali channel. 14 lines marked with boards and lights. Length approx. 59.5 km/32.1 nm. Cardinal marking. Lit. Dimensions: Design ship l = 200 m, b = 32 m, t = 10 m. Maximum authorised draught 10.0 m. Safe clearance depths (MW 2000) Lövskär-Hållers -11.5 m, Hållers-Utö -12.0 m. Minimum width 221 m. Minimum turning radius 1,000 m. NAVIGABILITY Instead of the route which goes in open sea, this fairway offers a route in the Archipelago Sea (Utö- Lövskär-Isokari), which is shorter, more sheltered against wind and with lighter ice conditions during difficult ice winters. Navigational conditions: The first leg of the fairway, from Utö to Lohm, goes through a more open archipelago where navigation can be hampered by hard winds and heavy seas. The leg between Lohm and Lövskär in the sound between Nagu and Korpo is sheltered and well marked. The channel has mainly two traffic lanes, but on the line W of Vandrock the fairway area narrows down to one lane. At the Lövskär bend and Korpo ferry berth special attention and caution should be observed due to the crossing traffic. Ice conditions: In the approach, Utö-Lohm, the ice conditions vary: sometimes there is no formation of ice, at times there is moving ice and the buoys can be pressed beneath the surface. At the entrance, Lohm-Lövskär) there is normally 10 – 60 cm thick fast ice, which remains passable all winter due to the heavy traffic. RECOMMENDATIONS Speed: The maximum permitted speed in the vicinity of the Korpo cable ferry is 16 km/h. Vessels with a draught equalling the maximum authorised draught are warned to beware of squat (design speed in the channel 13.5 knots with safe clearance depth -12.0 m). Wind gauge: Utö. The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested. It was formed in an area of thin pillow lavas, volcaniclastic sediments and limestones. The area is interpreted as having been an early basin of crustal extension which was the locus of an inherited zone of weakness in the Proterozoic crust. Early recumbent folding was followed by crustal thickening and intrusions of ~ 1.89-1.8 8 Ga old plutonics. The LSGM-zone is characterized by 1.84-1.83 Ga old rhomboidal sheets of late Svecofennian microcline granite and is bounded by ductile shears. Amongst the two major phases of deformation defined in the LSGM-zone, the earlier one (Dl) affected only the supracmstals and the 1.89-1.88 Ga old early plutonics. In contrast, the later phase (D2) also deformed the late Svecofennian migmatites and granites. Dl represents a complex and long-lasting deformation event which in- cluded overturning and thrusting of the Svecofennian strata. D2 comprised ENE-WSW directed drag accompanied by NNW-SSE compression. The Svecofennian crust was thick- ened further and anatectic microcline granites intruded along thrusts.

Of two subspecies subsp. ursinum is distributed in Western Europe including the Nordic countries. The general distribution of A. ursinum in the Nordic countries is outlined. The localities for A. ursinum in Finland are the northeasternmost in Europe. The rather few localities are concen- trated to the Åland Islands (Al) and the archipelago of Regio Aboënsis (Ab). They are described in a chronological order of the first find in each municipality. Several localities with A. ursinum as a cultivated plant or as a garden escape are referred to. The habitat requirements for Allium ursinum are discussed. Although A. ursinum has a broad distribution with a clear tendency to occur as a weed, it is still a habitat specialist with a rather narrow range of ecological tolerance as it requires a mesic well-drained soil and drought as well as waterlogging seem to be unfavourable.
