Catalogue and Typifications of New Taxa of Vascular Plants Described by Mårten Magnus Wilhelm Brenner (1843–1930)

Bot. Fennici 58: 139–169. Mårten Magnus Wilhelm Brenner (1843–1930) was a non-professional Finnish botanist who published 220 articles or notes. Brenner worked on East Fennoscandian vascular plants (the territory of present-day Finland and adjacent Russia). He validly published ca. 833 new taxa, especially in genus Hieracium (including Pilosella), and introduced 56 names as nomina nuda. Brenner had no concept of type specimens and therefore all his plant taxa need typification, and 151 of those are lectotypified here. In this paper, nomina nuda and the taxa whose type material was not found are also listed, except those of the apomictic genera Hieracium and Taraxacum. Many of Brenner’s new taxa are forms and varieties, generally not recognised nowadays. Many of his taxa were based on single or few specimens and therefore were characterised by local distributions, whereas some include ample original material. Finnish botanists generally ignored Brenner’s contribu- tions to taxonomy. However, 11 species of Hieracium, 20 of Taraxacum and Euphrasia stricta var. -
The Utö-Lövskär Channel (10.0 M) Starts at the Utö-Naantali Channel N of Utö and Continues from South to North Between Nagu and Korpo Towards Lövskär
FAIRWAY CARD UTÖ-LÖVSKÄR CHANNEL (10.0 M) 6.7.2021 CHANNEL DATA Alignment and buoyage: The Utö-Lövskär channel (10.0 m) starts at the Utö-Naantali channel N of Utö and continues from south to north between Nagu and Korpo towards Lövskär. The fairway ends W of Lövskär in the Utö-Naantali channel. 14 lines marked with boards and lights. Length approx. 59.5 km/32.1 nm. Cardinal marking. Lit. Dimensions: Design ship l = 200 m, b = 32 m, t = 10 m. Maximum authorised draught 10.0 m. Safe clearance depths (MW 2000) Lövskär-Hållers -11.5 m, Hållers-Utö -12.0 m. Minimum width 221 m. Minimum turning radius 1,000 m. NAVIGABILITY Instead of the route which goes in open sea, this fairway offers a route in the Archipelago Sea (Utö- Lövskär-Isokari), which is shorter, more sheltered against wind and with lighter ice conditions during difficult ice winters. Navigational conditions: The first leg of the fairway, from Utö to Lohm, goes through a more open archipelago where navigation can be hampered by hard winds and heavy seas. The leg between Lohm and Lövskär in the sound between Nagu and Korpo is sheltered and well marked. The channel has mainly two traffic lanes, but on the line W of Vandrock the fairway area narrows down to one lane. At the Lövskär bend and Korpo ferry berth special attention and caution should be observed due to the crossing traffic. Ice conditions: In the approach, Utö-Lohm, the ice conditions vary: sometimes there is no formation of ice, at times there is moving ice and the buoys can be pressed beneath the surface. -
The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction
The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested. Keywords: Finland, Iron Age, Middle Ages, archipelago, settlement studies, nationalism, history, culture, wilderness, borderlands. 1. The coastal Uusimaa revisited er the country had inhabitants at all during the Bronze Age (Aspelin 1875: 58). This drastic The early Finnish settlement archaeologists of- interpretation developed into a long-term re- ten treated the question of whether the country search tradition that contains the idea of easily was settled at all during the prehistory: were perishable human communities and abandoned people in some sense active there, or was the regions. -

Without the advice and encouragement of certain persons this work would not have been possible, or at least it would have looked very different. To these persons I direct my deep gratitude. First of all I want to thank my supervisors, professors Gunilla Widén-Wulff and Mike Thelwall, for their advice and support throughout this process. I have been very fortunate to have two such knowledgeable and generous supervisors. Gunilla has given me the freedom to pursue my own path and make my own discoveries, but she has always been there to help me find my way back to the path when I have strayed too far from it. It has been a great privilege to have Mike as my second supervisor. Mike’s vast knowledge and experience of webometrics, great technical skills, and unparalleled helpfulness have been extremely valuable throughout this research. I also want to thank professors Mariam Ginman and Sara von Ungern-Sternberg for convincing me to pursue a doctoral degree, a decision that I have never regretted.
