PORT OF NAANTALI PORT AND TERMINAL HANDBOOK N 60◦ 27´N E 22◦ 03´E 2 SERVING TRADE AND INDUSTRY The Port of Naantali serves the trade in a wide range of the hin- terland as well as the industry close to the port. Industrial en- terprises and factories (e.g. oil refinery, lubricant factory, coal power plant, betaine factory, grain silos etc.) operating in the immediate vicinity of the harbour generate large material flows. Easy ice condition in wintertime and one of the deepest fairways and quays in Finland, up to 15,3 m, enable Aframax tankers and Panamax size bulk carriers loading and/or discharging regularly at the port. Moreover, the short sea voyage and frequent ferry connection to Sweden make Naantali the most important cargo hub between Finland and Scandinavia. Partly, for these reasons, Naantali is today 4th largest universal cargo port in Finland. The total annual traffic to and from the port ( transported via the port`s quays and/or water areas) is ca. 6,8 million tons, of which 80 % is foreign traffic. The main volumes come from liquid and dry bulk materials and ferry goods. The Port of Naantali is one of the busiest cargo ports in Finland with ca. 2000 annual number of vessel calls. VALUE ADDED SERVICES Naantali is a long time known as a significant centre for dry bulk goods operations, thanks to excellent storage facilities and all- round value-added services. Naantali is one of the largest ports e.g. for coal, grain and cement cargo handling in Finland. The port handles and stores also fertilizers, feed stuff and other agri- bulk materials as well as different type of recycling materials. -

Two of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Finland are located in Rauma. One of the sites, Old Rauma, is an extensive, uniform wood-built town district dating back to the Middle Ages. Old Rauma is a living town district where historical heritage lives on in perfect harmony with modern commerce and local residents. You’ll find an ample range of high-quality cafes, restaurants and charming little boutiques there. The idyllic ambience is complemented by museums, lovely gardens, the marketplace and the impressive medieval Church of the Holy Cross. The other World Heritage Site is the Bronze Age cairn cemetery of Sammallahdenmäki. The stone structures at Sammallahdenmäki – Bronze Age burial cairns built on rocks – bear evidence to the early settlement. Colourful maritime past Seafaring has for centuries brought an international flavour to the life of this small town. Rauma has always earned its livelihood from the sea and in addition has a long tradition of overseas trade, thereby adopting influences from faraway lands. The three tourist islands of Rauma – the Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island, the Kuuskajaskari fortress island and the Reksaari nature island – are located just off the coast of the town. The archipelago of Rauma belongs to the Bothnian Sea National Park and provides a splendid, memorable setting for those who love the sea and the great outdoors. -

Åretrunt- och fritidsboende, hamnar, industri och trafik upptar redan största delen av havskustens strandlinje. I de livligaste områdena är bara en liten del av stranden fri och obebyggd. Den fria strandlinjen är splittrad på små av- snitt, på öar och längre bort från de största befolkningscentren. En hållbar användning av kusterna har på senare år blivit en aktuell fråga i och med att städerna och näringslivet växer mest på kusterna. Detta gäller hela Europa. Kommande generationer kommer inte att ha några större möjligheter att besluta om användningen av dessa områden. Rekommendationen om en hållbar användning och skötsel av kustområdena i Europeiska Unionen fäster uppmärksamhet vid frågan och uppmanar medlemsländerna att utarbeta en strategi för kusterna. Den nationella kuststrategin som utarbetades i Finland år 2006 lägger fram sätt att använda kusten på ett mer hållbart sätt. Den utredning som nu har gjorts bidrar till att nå detta mål. -

FAIRWAY CARD UTÖ-LÖVSKÄR CHANNEL (10.0 M) 6.7.2021 CHANNEL DATA Alignment and buoyage: The Utö-Lövskär channel (10.0 m) starts at the Utö-Naantali channel N of Utö and continues from south to north between Nagu and Korpo towards Lövskär. The fairway ends W of Lövskär in the Utö-Naantali channel. 14 lines marked with boards and lights. Length approx. 59.5 km/32.1 nm. Cardinal marking. Lit. Dimensions: Design ship l = 200 m, b = 32 m, t = 10 m. Maximum authorised draught 10.0 m. Safe clearance depths (MW 2000) Lövskär-Hållers -11.5 m, Hållers-Utö -12.0 m. Minimum width 221 m. Minimum turning radius 1,000 m. NAVIGABILITY Instead of the route which goes in open sea, this fairway offers a route in the Archipelago Sea (Utö- Lövskär-Isokari), which is shorter, more sheltered against wind and with lighter ice conditions during difficult ice winters. Navigational conditions: The first leg of the fairway, from Utö to Lohm, goes through a more open archipelago where navigation can be hampered by hard winds and heavy seas. The leg between Lohm and Lövskär in the sound between Nagu and Korpo is sheltered and well marked. The channel has mainly two traffic lanes, but on the line W of Vandrock the fairway area narrows down to one lane. At the Lövskär bend and Korpo ferry berth special attention and caution should be observed due to the crossing traffic. Ice conditions: In the approach, Utö-Lohm, the ice conditions vary: sometimes there is no formation of ice, at times there is moving ice and the buoys can be pressed beneath the surface. -

The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested.
