    Chapter 4. The Contemporary Sicilian-Australian Music Scene in Sydney 131 4.1. Introduction To illustrate the presence of Italian/Sicilian folk music in Sydney, I have developed this chapter in nine sections. I shall start by defining which kind of music has been of interest in my Sydney research (4.2); following, I will introduce the Italian record circulation and the Italian song festivals in Sydney (4.3), which are important to understand how the music culture in the Sicilian musical scene has grown and developed. The core of the Chapter will consist of a description of the feste1 (Feasts) of Protector Saints important to the Sicilian community. I shall start by introducing what a festa is; a description of four feste I attended in Sydney will follow, together with a description and analysis of the types of music which are found in these celebrations and their main exponents (4.4). After having considered the festive context, I shall list and analyse some of the major protagonists in the Sicilian musical scene on occasions which are unrelated to religious practices: clubs frequented or founded by Sicilian emigrants, retirement villages (Scalabrini Villages) and home gatherings (4.5 and 4.6). A section describing and analysing the two Sicilian folkloristic groups which have been active in Sydney in the 1980s and 1990s will follow, as they take part in both feste and other, lay, community events (4.7).     LISTA DEI CONCERTI DI “ELIO E LE STORIE TESE” realizzata da Andrea Saettone con la collaborazione di Duccio Pasqua Febbraio 2014 Sono passati quasi 25 anni dalla pubblicazione del primo album a nome Elio e le Storie Tese ed il grande successo di quel disco d’esordio non fu casuale, ma frutto di una lunghissima gavetta dal vivo che ha permesso al gruppo di conquistarsi poco per volta un pubblico sempre maggiore. L’attività live è sempre stata una caratteristica determinante per la loro popolarità e nell’arco di oltre 30 anni di attività la band ha suonato in decine di tour per tutta l’Italia, dando vita spesso ad eventi unici e memorabili, come il concerto al Teatro Arcimboldi di Milano con l’Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini per il quale hanno fatto registrare il tutto esaurito. Chissà se Elio o i pochi intimi che assistettero al primo concerto nel luglio del 1980 se lo sarebbero mai immaginato!?! La “Concertografia di Elio e le Storie Tese” nasce dal desiderio di catalogazione, nel modo più preciso e completo possibile, di tutte le apparizioni live del complessino. Viste le grandi incertezze per i primi anni di attività, per cercare di limitare gli errori nella stesura ed aumentare l’affidabilità delle ricerche si è ritenuto fondamentale indicare per ogni concerto le fonti consultate [riportate tra parentesi quadre]. Attualmente ci sono 1104 concerti a nome “Elio e le Storie Tese”, esclusi ulteriori 21 eventi/performance non assimilabili a concerti veri e propri. Sono segnalati anche concerti per radio e tv, ma non le apparizioni come ospiti o in playback, né concerti dei singoli componenti.

Crowded Voice: Speech, Music and Community in Milan, 1955-1974 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship of voice, language, and politics in Italian musical history. I do this through a double geographical and chronological lens: first, the city of Milan, a powerful political and cultural interface between Italy and Central Europe; secondly, the years 1955-1974, key decades in the constitution of Italy’s first democratic government and years of vertiginous anthropological changes across the peninsula.Across the four chapters of my thesis, I sketch a heterogeneous and thickly populated network of musical activities—ranging from high-modernist tape music to opera, neofolk records, to pop hits. I argue the musical production for voice of this time expresses long-standing anxieties about speech and communication through the recurring use of nonsense languages, distorted recorded speech, and para-linguistic phenomena such as laughter as musical materials. The root of these anxieties lies in a version of Italy’s fivecentury-old language question—the question of Italy’s absent common tongue—and at the same time, a European Enlightenment tradition that sets Italy as the southern land of the beautiful voice, and yet also ineffective policies and underdeveloped language faculties.
