  • Educated Youth Should Go to the Rural Areas: a Tale of Education, Employment and Social Values*
Educated Youth Should Go to the Rural Areas: A Tale of Education, Employment and Social Values* Yang You† Harvard University This draft: July 2018 Abstract I use a quasi-random urban-dweller allocation in rural areas during Mao’s Mass Rustication Movement to identify human capital externalities in education, employment, and social values. First, rural residents acquired an additional 0.1-0.2 years of education from a 1% increase in the density of sent-down youth measured by the number of sent-down youth in 1969 over the population size in 1982. Second, as economic outcomes, people educated during the rustication period suffered from less non-agricultural employment in 1990. Conversely, in 2000, they enjoyed increased hiring in all non-agricultural occupations and lower unemployment. Third, sent-down youth changed the social values of rural residents who reported higher levels of trust, enhanced subjective well-being, altered trust from traditional Chinese medicine to Western medicine, and shifted job attitudes from objective cognitive assessments to affective job satisfaction. To explore the mechanism, I document that sent-down youth served as rural teachers with two new county-level datasets. Keywords: Human Capital Externality, Sent-down Youth, Rural Educational Development, Employment Dynamics, Social Values, Culture JEL: A13, N95, O15, I31, I25, I26 * This paper was previously titled and circulated, “Does living near urban dwellers make you smarter” in 2017 and “The golden era of Chinese rural education: evidence from Mao’s Mass Rustication Movement 1968-1980” in 2015. Mycosphere 5(1), 27–76, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/5/1/2 Abstract A total of 36 species of Hypogymnia are known from southwestern China. This region is a center of biodiversity for the genus. Hypogymnia capitata, H. nitida, H. saxicola, H. pendula, and H. tenuispora are newly described species from Yunnan and Sichuan. Olivetoric acid is new as a major lichen substance in Hypogymnia, occurring only in H. capitata. A key and illustrations are given for the species known from this region, along with five species from adjoining regions that might be confused or have historically been misidentified in this region. Key words – Lecanorales – lichenized ascomycetes – Parmeliaceae – Shaanxi – Sichuan – Tibet – Yunnan – Xizang. Introduction The first major collections of Hypogymnia from southwestern China were by Handel- Mazzetti, from which Zahlbruckner (1930) reported six species now placed in Hypogymnia, and Harry Smith (1921-1934, published piecewise by other authors; Herner 1988). Since the last checklist of lichens in China (Wei 1991), which reported 16 species of Hypogymnia from the southwestern provinces, numerous species of Hypogymnia from southwestern China have been described or revised (Chen 1994, Wei & Bi 1998, McCune & Obermayer 2001, McCune et al.

In this study, the spatial and temporal trends of ET0 in China’s most northern province as well as the country’s largest agricultural region were analyzed for the period from 1964 to 2013. ET0 was calculated with the Penman-Monteith of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations irrigation and drainage paper NO.56 (FAO-56) using climatic data collected from 27 stations. Inverse distance weighting (IDW) was used for the spatial interpolation of the estimated ET0. A Modified Mann–Kendall test (MMK) was applied to test the spatiotemporal trends of ET0, while Pearson’s correlation coefficient and cross-wavelet analysis were employed to assess the factors affecting the spatiotemporal variability at different elevations.

  • SNOW LEOPARDS from the CAR, Qinghai
Qinghai 2017 Richard Webb SNOW LEOPARDS FROM THE CAR Qinghai: 27 February to 12 March 2017 Richard Webb CONTENTS Introduction Itinerary Logistics Mammal-watching sites 1. Guides 2. Flights Mammals 3. Visas 4. Accommodation Birds Qinghai Map INTRODUCTION I first saw Snow Leopard in Kazakhstan in 2003, well before Ladakh became the place to see the species. Plans to visit Ladakh have twice had to be aborted for health reasons and when it became apparent that Terry Townshend, and Jean-Michel Bompar (who had travelled with Sid Francis’s business partner, Roland) had both had success in southern Qinghai in 2016 I decided to give it a go with Sid Francis. 1 Qinghai 2017 Richard Webb It appeared a great move when we saw two leopards from the car within four hours of reaching the first site and although we only had one further sighting in the next nine days, we also heard leopards calling on at least two days and received what appeared to be reliable reports from yak herders of two leopards being seen in another of the valleys on a regular basis. It is unlikely that the area will ever rival Hemis in Ladakh in terms of its reliability for sightings given the number of well-trained leopard-spotters operating in that area. However the area appears to have potential with comfortable accommodation within 75 minutes’ drive of the sites and would be worth further investigation. I strongly recommend that anyone wanting to give it a try contacts Sid Francis to organise a trip at [email protected].
