  • Washingtonians, Meet Bei Bei the Giant Panda 17 January 2016
Washingtonians, meet Bei Bei the giant panda 17 January 2016 see him. The official media debut was a month ago. Bei Bei has already been fussed over by two first ladies—Michelle Obama and her Chinese counterpart Peng Liyuan—during a state visit to Washington in September. Bei Bei means precious in Mandarin. Like his big sister Bao Bao and their older sibling Tai Shuan, Bei Bei will be handed over to China at age four. (Bei Bei's twin brother died shortly after birth.) Their parents, Mei Xian and Tian Tian, are on loan Giant panda cub Bei Bei makes his public debut at the from China and will remain in Washington at least National Zoo in Washington, DC on January 16, 2016 until 2020 under a recently renewed agreement. Under that accord, the zoo pays $500,000 a year to support conservation efforts in China. Washingtonians got their first close-up look © 2016 AFP Saturday at the giant panda cub Bei Bei, the new star of the National Zoo. Until now, the cub could be viewed only through the so-called Panda Cam, a video hookup that has allowed people to watch the now five-month-old cub since its birth. A line formed outside the panda enclosure Saturday morning before opening time to get a look at the ball of fur inside its soundproof glass enclosed pen. Some wore hats, sweaters and gloves with pandas on them. Visitors came into the pen in groups of 50 at a time and were allowed about 10 minutes to view the panda, an endangered species.

(AP Photo/Susan Walsh) Zoo officials in Washington are hoping to get panda mom Mei Xiang pregnant—again. Smithsonian National Zoo officials say they performed two artificial inseminations Thursday on 18-year-old Mei Xiang. Officials say they were closely monitoring her for when to do the procedure. That's because female giant pandas are only able to become pregnant for 24 to 72 hours each year. Officials say Mei Xiang's estrogen levels peaked Wednesday, an indication she was able to become pregnant. Officials say Mei Xiang and the zoo's 19-year-old male Tian Tian failed to breed naturally. Mei Xiang has given birth to three surviving cubs: Tai Shan in 2005, Bao Bao in 2013 and Bei Bei in 1 / 2 APA citation: Oh baby! They are loved because of the way they resemble teddy bears and babies. Two pandas whose names have become well known amongst animal lovers, are Qizai and Bei Bei. 5 Qizai, World's Only Captive Brown And White Panda With only about 1,800 specimens left in the wild, all giant pandas are precious. However, Qizai, a nine-year-old that resides at the Foping Panda Valley in China’s Shaanxi province, is even more so. That’s because he is amongst a 10 handful of giant pandas known to have brown and white fur instead of black and white. Being the only brown panda in captivity, he is now the superstar of the animal world. However, for Qizai, who now weighs 100 kilos, life has not always been easy. Born in 2010, Qizai was first discovered by researchers in the mountains when he was just two months old. It seems that his mother had abandoned him and returned to 15 the forest. The panda was weak and alone. They took him to the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue Centre where he spent his early years. Once he had been nursed back to health, the giant panda cub was transferred to his current home so that he could be in the company of other giant pandas.

This is the 14th annual set of genetic management recommendations developed for giant pandas. The current ex situ population of giant pandas consists of 423 animals (189 males, 232 females, 2 unsexed pandas) located in 78 institutions worldwide. In 2015 there were 43 births and 15 deaths. Transfers included 100 separate transfers of 73 animals between Chinese institutions and 3 transfers to Hong Kong and Macao. The genetic status of the population is currently healthy (gene diversity = 97.4%), with 52 founders represented and another 9 that could be genetically represented if they were to successfully breed. There are 5 inbred animals with estimated inbreeding coefficients > 4% and another 18 animals with a low level of inbreeding (< 4%). There are 53 giant pandas in the studbook that are living or have living descendants and for which the sire is uncertain due to natural mating and/or artificial insemination with multiple males.

Giant Panda Zoo Awards 2014 大熊猫动物园奖 www.GiantPandaZoo.com www.DaXiongMaoDongWuYuan.com Xing Hui - Pairi Daiza 星徽 - 天堂动物园 Welcome to the introduction magazine about the third edition of the Annual Giant Panda Zoo Awards organ- ised by www.GiantPandaZoo.com. As a young panda fan, looking around for information about my favorite animal, I launched the website in 2000. My passion for pandas started during many visits to my Belgian hometown zoo in the summer of 1987. Wan Wan & Xi Xi were on a short-term loan at the Zoo of Antwerp from Xian Zoo. In the same year, Chuan Chuan & Su Su from the Chengdu Zoo visited the Netherlands, Yun Yun & Ling Ling created new pandamonium in New York and in Tampa, U.S.A., but the visit of 1987 with the most impact might have been the one of Basi & Yuan Yuan from Fuzhou Panda World to the San Diego Zoo. Adventure World Wakayama in Japan was the first foreign institution to sign a longterm giant panda breeding loan. The San Diego Zoo was the first Western zoo to sign such a contract. Bai Yun gave birth to Hua Mei on August 21, 1999. The online pandamonium started and Hua Mei was the first foreign born giant panda to move back to her parents native country. This year, I completed my world tour and have visited all countries worldwide with giant pandas and one of Hua Mei's cubs, Hao Hao, moved to Belgium with her mate Xing Hui. Pairi Daiza was the first foreign zoo to sign a 15-year panda breeding loan.

Ballou, Ph.D. IUCN/SSC Conservation Breeding Specialist Group Chinese translation provided by: Yan Ping Sponsored by: Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute Executive Summary This is a report on the meeting held 13 - 15 November 2012 in Chengdu, China to update the analysis of the ex situ population of giant pandas and develop breeding recommendations for the 2013 breeding season. This is the 11th annual set of genetic management recommendations developed for giant pandas. The current ex situ population of giant pandas consists of 341 animals (154 males, 184 females, 3 unsexed pandas) located in 66 institutions worldwide. In 2012 there were 28 births and 18 deaths. The genetic status of the population is currently healthy, with 51 founders represented and another 14 that could be genetically represented if they were to successfully breed. There are only 3 inbred animals with inbreeding coefficients > 3% in the population. There are 55 giant pandas in the studbook that are living or have living descendents and for which the sire is unknown or uncertain. Most of these are pandas that were born in 2006 or later and are the result of natural mating and/or artificial insemination with multiple males. The result is that 11% of the gene pool of the ex situ population is derived from uncertain ancestry.
