Adventure World Wakayama in Japan was the first foreign institution to sign a longterm giant panda breeding loan. The San Diego Zoo was the first Western zoo to sign such a contract. gave birth to on August 21, 1999. 5 China's National Treasure

The giant panda (ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a black and white bear native to central- and south-western China. It has black fur on it's ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, and shoulders. The rest of the animal’s coat is white. The panda’s thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat. They are carnivores, but have developed a vegetarian diet that consists for 99% of bamboo. Giant pandas have a pseudo thumb and large molar teeth and strong jaw muscles for crushing tough bamboo.

The giant panda is one of the most beautifull, loved, mysterious and interesting animals on our planet. It is an Ambassador for conservation, nature and wildlife in- and outside China.

The earliest books with recordings of the giant panda were written 3.000 years ago. On March 11, 1869, the French missionary Armand David, was the first westerner to see a giant panda.

The giant panda is listed as endangered in the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN’s) Red List of Threatened Animals. There are about 1.600 left in the wild and about 397 giant pandas live in captivity (breeding centers & zoos), 52 live in zoos outside of mainland China. 中国的国宝
