Dear Parents of Rising Fifth Graders,

Research has shown that it is important for children to read on a daily basis during the summer to maintain and improve skills worked on during the school year. Rising Fifth Graders, are required to read two books over the summer months.

Enclosed is the book The ’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis. This book will be used for one of your child’s summer reading requirements. Please encourage your child to finish this book before the start of the next school year. We will discuss this book upon returning to school for the 2020-2021 school year. Your student is to choose one of the attached projects from “The Magician’s Nephew Choice Board” to complete for this book and bring it back to school during the first week. Your child will take an A.R. quiz on The Magician’s Nephew that will count as a reading grade for quarter one. Please make sure that this book is returned to your child’s teacher by Friday, August 21st. If the book is lost or damaged, a $5.00 fee will apply.

The second requirement involves your child picking their own A.R. book based on their interests and complete the attached generic book report project about that book. The book must be at least a 4th grade reading level and have a minimum of 150 pages. You can use arbookfinder.com or the app “”PointsScanFree” to see what level the book is, and how many points it’s worth. The other generic attached assignment should be turned into your child’s teacher no later than Friday, August 21st. (Students may take the A.R. test upon return to school in the fall, if desired, but it is not required.)

Thank you in advance for your support and encouragement with reading this summer! We believe that reading over the summer months will be beneficial to your child as they transition into fifth grade.
