Christopher PART j: THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE CHRONICLES Here, in addition to the internal rhymes, one notices the use of low vowels — the short a and the u of bump which is close to a schwa in sound. (These low vowels are as appropriate for giants as the high vowels were for dw arfs.) But this second part of the "Narnian Suite" does not exist in isolation. First, the last stanza of this second part: H o! tremble town and tumble down And crumble shield and sabre! Your kings will mumble and look pale, Your horses stumble or turn tail, Your skimble-scamble counsels fail, So rumble drum belaboured— Oh rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble drum belaboured! Second, a passage from The Last Battle, describing Tirian, Eustace, Poggin the Dwarf, Jill, Puzzle the Donkey, and Jewel the Unicorn going The Chronicles of Narnia consist of seven children's books and one (they think) to meet Roonwit the Centaur and the aid he is bringing: non-chronological poem, all written by C. S, Lewis. They were published It was a little after two in the afternoon when they set out, and it in the following order: was the first really warm day of that spring. " Even Tirian's heart grew lighter as he walked The Horse and his Boy (Geoffrey Bles, 1954) ahead of them, humming an old Narnian marching song which had The Magician's Nephew (Bodley Head, 1955) the refrain: The Last Battle (Bodley Head, 1956) Ho, rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble. Walter Hooper, Geoffrey Bles, 1964) (The Last Battle, p. 90) All of the novels, either as a subtitle on the title page or on the wrapper Presumably, since the second part of the poem was first published in 1953 or both, have the words A Story for Children. Before considering other dating systems for the series, I should like to discuss briefly the non-chronological element in this chronology, the poem. The first section, "March for Strings, Kettledrums, and Sixty- three Dwarfs, " begins this way: With plucking pizzicato and the prattle of the kettledrum W e're trotting into battle mid a clatter of accoutrement; Our beards are big as periwigs and trickle with opopanax. And trinketry and treasure twinkle out on every part of us — (Scrape! Tap! The fiddle and the kettledrum). (Poems, pp. 6-7) The internal rhymes suggest several of.the poems collected by J .R .R . Tolkien in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil — and, indeed, the mere appearance of a metrical supplement to the Chronicles of Narnia suggests an impulse in Lewis parallel to Tolkien's expanding mental universe. (Thomas Hardy showed the same impulse when, for example, he wrote six poems echoing his novel Tess of the d'U rbervilles: "Growth in May, " "We Field-Women; " "The Slow Nature, " ''T ess' Lament, " "At Middle- Field Gate in February," and "Beyond the Last Lam p.") " At.first I had very little idea how the story.would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. 1 think 1 had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time. Apart from that, I don't know where the Lion came from or why He came. But once He was there He pulled the whole story together, and soon He pulled the six other Narnian stories 'in after him. (Of Other Worlds: Essays sind Stories ed. by Walter Hooper; Harcourt, Brace and World, 1966; p. 42) Since Lewis was born in 1898, the image of the Faun came to him about 1914 and he began to write the story about 1938 — the latter date being far earlier than that of publication, 1950. The second source of information is in Roger Lancelyn Green's C.S. Lewis (A Bodley Head Monograph, 1963). In one passage, based on Lewis' authority, he reaffirms the early date: "The earliest sketch for the first book was made in 1938; it was very different from the final version, and Aslan did not appear in it" (p. 48). Lucy and Tumnus have a wonderful tea, but the faun bursts into tears and confesses that he is a servant of the evil White Witch. The Witch has enchanted Narnia so that it is always winter and never Christmas. Tumnus explains that he has been enlisted to capture human beings. Lucy implores Tumnus to release her, and he agrees. Lucy exits Narnia and eagerly tells her siblings about her adventure in the wardrobe. They do not believe her, however. Lucy's siblings insist that Lucy was only gone for seconds and not for hours as she claims. When the Pevensie children look in the back of the wardrobe they see that it is an ordinary piece of furniture. Edmund teases Lucy mercilessly about her imaginary country until one day when he sees her vanishing into the wardrobe. Edmund follows Lucy and finds himself in Narnia as well. He does not see Lucy, and instead meets the White Witch that Tumnus told Lucy about. The Witch Witch introduces herself to Edmund as the Queen of Narnia.

They race to warn the Archenlanders and rally the Narnians to their aid. This story is set during the Golden reign of the Pevensie children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. Calormene- A land South of Narnia, it is home to cruel, pagan slave lords: the Tarquins. Setting Narnia- Home of the four kings and queens of legend and kingdom of the lion Aslan, the Son of the King Beyond the Sea. Archenland- Borderland between Calormene and Narnia, populated by free people whose loyalty is to Narnia and Aslan. Shasta- The protagonist of the piece is a young boy, uneducated and neglected. Though he is immature, he has an inbred longing for freedom and justice and an indomitable hope to escape to the free North. Bree recognizes at once that he must be “of true Northern stock.” Bree- Pompous and self-important, the Narnian horse brags about his knowledge of the North and plays the courageous war-horse though he is really a coward at heart. Despite his boorish tone, he is a loyal friend.

According to Edward Said (2003:1-2), the Orient is one of Europe’s ‘deepest and most recurring images of the Other… [which]…has helped to define Europe (or the West) as its contrasting image, idea, personality, experience.’ However, values are grouped around otherness1 in fantasy literature as in no other genre, facilitating what J.R.R. Tolkien (2001:58) identifies as Recovery, the ‘regaining of a clear view… [in order that] the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity.’ In Chapter One, it is argued that this gives the way the genre deals with spaces and identities characterized as Oriental, which in Western stories are themselves vested with qualities of strangeness, a peculiar significance. Specifically, new ways of perceiving the function of representations of the Other are explored in the genre of fantasy.

    August 2018 – DEATH OF A FRIEND In The Silver Chair, one of the books in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, Aslan calls two children, Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole, out of our world into Narnia to find a lost Prince. Toward the end of the story, they are saddened by the death of King Caspian, who Eustace had become good friends with during a previous adventure. As they and others mourn this loss, Aslan, the Christ figure of Narnia, appears on the scene. He takes Eustace and Jill to his mountain: Then they saw that they were once more on the Mountain of Aslan, high up above and beyond the end of the world in which Narnia lies. But the strange thing was that the funeral music for King Caspian still went on, though no one could tell where it came from. They were walking beside the stream and the Lion went before them: and he became so beautiful, and the music so despairing, that Jill did not know which of them it was that filled her eyes with tears. Then Aslan stopped, and the children looked into the stream. And there, on the golden gravel of the bed of the stream, lay King Caspian, dead, with the water flowing over him like liquid glass. His long white beard swayed in it like water-weed. And all three stood and wept. Even the Lion wept: great Lion-tears, each tear more precious than the Earth would be if it was a single solid diamond.1 Aslan instructs Eustace to pluck a thorn from a thicket, and to drive it into Aslan’s paw: Then Eustace set his teeth and drove the thorn into the Lion’s pad.

They are finely embedded with the archetypal images such as light and darkness, sibling rivalry, tyrannical bullies, quest motif and character types. Albeit, the series has hooked up with various archetypal characteristics such as the theme of virtue conquers vice, it is the archetypal patterns in characters which have left a sturdy imprint to execute the thematic design of good versus evil in the entire plot structure. The intrinsic study of the series illustrates the infinite variety of experience of the dominant characters; wherein it reveals certain archetypal traits. Hence, the present paper explores on the variety of Archetypes in C.S.Lewis‟s The Chronicles of Narnia.
