ACKNOWLEDGMENTS My desire to earn a Ph.D. became a goal for me when I decided not to take the spot offered to me the University of Missouri Law School after earning my bachelor’s degree. I told myself that if I wasn’t going to law school I would someday get a Ph.D. And so, in August 2006, my journey as a Ph.D. student at the University of Missouri began. This has been a long journey for me spanning ten years. I began as a full-time student and then had my first child. I decided to take only one class a semester at that point. After having my second child I took a two-year maternity leave. When my daughter went to pre-school, I decided it was time to start back part-time. This has led me to this point, finally the end is in sight. I have worked with many amazing professors along the way. Dr. Laurie Kingsley was not only my instructor, but guided me through my first IRB submission and research project. She provided me with practical advice and was always willing to listen. Her classes were engaging and pushed me to analyze and think deeply about what I was reading and the assignments. Linda Esser stayed on my committee and was a second reader on my dissertation even though she retired. I appreciate her willingness to continue to provide me with guidance and feedback. Dr. Gilles has been and excellent advisor and made the dissertation writing process as painless as it can be. Not only have you guided me through my dissertation, but your multicultural children’s literature course gave me the background knowledge I needed for my dissertation. You encouraged me to consider new ways of thinking about ii various issues related to gender and feminism in children’s literature. Everything I have learned I am already using or planning to use in my new positon as a literacy specialist. I would like to say thank you to my fellow graduate student and friend, Ariel Robinson. I truly cannot express how much your friendship has meant to me. I never would have made it through the last year and a half without having you to listen and give me advice about not only my research, but my life. Honestly, my mental sanity would be in question if you had not been there for me. Of course I must acknowledge my parents. I learned the value of hard work at a young age when I started working at age 10 as a waitress at my father’s pizza restaurant. Those Sundays, which did not end until I graduated from college, greatly shaped me into the person I am today. I do not think my father realizes how much those Sundays mean to me. Just my dad and me working together. You can imagine over the years all the talks we had. It was from those Sundays that I learned the value of a hard work ethic, to never give up, and to always be honest. Both my parents taught me the value of an education and my parents told me from a young age that I could be anything I wanted to be. My mother has always been there to listen and give advice when I need it. She was my first running buddy and I love her for that. I will never be able to thank my parents enough for everything they have done for me. My children and husband have put up with so much as I have worked on this degree, especially as I have worked on my dissertation. I have to acknowledge them for their patience when I have been distracted or unable to do something with them because I have to “work on my dissertation.” These have been very common words over the last iii year. They will be extremely happy to never hear those words again. I cannot imagine my life without the support of my husband or my children. This hegemonic femininity prescribes standards that are considered ideals in describing the archetypical feminine woman. Black women have been stereotyped as unfeminine and unattractive, and this negative and pervasive social rhetoric continue to have a long lasting adverse impact on this population. Black feminist scholars have long articulated the importance of defining Black womanhood not in relation to hegemonic femininity, but by incorporating the actual experiences of Black women. Using an interpretative phenomenological methodology and based on interviews with Black women in the United States, the current study investigated Black women’s notion of womanhood. This study uncovered ways participants self-defined, resisted negative and oppressive societal messages, and celebrated their own Black Womanhood.

Pruchniewska May 2019 Examining Committee Members: Carolyn Kitch, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Adrienne Shaw, Media and Communication Rebecca Alpert, Religion ABSTRACT The last decade has seen a pronounced increase in feminist activism and sentiment in the public sphere, which scholars, activists, and journalists have dubbed the “fourth wave” of feminism. A key feature of the fourth wave is the use of digital technologies and the internet for feminist activism and discussion. This dissertation aims to broadly understand what is “new” about fourth wave feminism and specifically to understand how social media intersect with everyday feminist practices in the digital era. This project is made up of three case studies –Bumble the “feminist” dating app, private Facebook groups for women professionals, and the #MeToo movement on Twitter— and uses an affordance theory lens, examining the possibilities for (and constraints of) use embedded in the materiality of each digital platform. Through in-depth interviews and focus groups with users, alongside a structural discourse analysis of each platform, the findings show how social media are used strategically as tools for feminist purposes during mundane online activities such as dating and connecting with colleagues. Overall, this research highlights the feminist potential of everyday social media use, while considering the limits of digital technologies for everyday feminism. This work also reasserts the continued need for feminist activism in the fourth wave, by showing that the material realities of gender inequality persist, often obscured by an illusion of empowerment.

Brown b a Department of Management, University of Toronto at Scarborough, Canada b Department of Psychology, University of Waterloo, Canada Received 13 March 2005 Available online 24 July 2006 Abstract In the current paper we investigate whether gender aVects the encoding of leadership behavior. In three studies we found evidence that perceivers had diYculty encoding leadership behaviors into their underlying prototypical leadership traits when the behavior implied an agentic trait and the behavior was enacted by a female. Using a lexical decision making task, in Study 1 we demonstrated that agentic leadership traits were less accessible than communal leadership traits when the leader was female. Additionally, Study 1 also demonstrated that agentic traits were less accessible when the leader was female versus male. In Studies 2a and 2b, we replicated the diVerences we found for agentic leadership behaviors using perceiver’s self-ratings as the dependent variable. Results are dis- cussed both in terms of their implications for future research on gender bias in leadership and their practical implications for elimi- nating gender bias against females who aspire to leadership positions. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. The interview was conducted in Ghent in the spring of 2000. Sandra Gilbert’s name is most often used in conjunction with that of Professor Susan Gubar as the author of The Madwoman in the Attic and the trilogy No Man’s Land. In the course of the interview Professor Gilbert talks about the hurdles she had to cross as a young woman academic, the choices she had to make as a mother, her successful collaboration with Susan Gubar and her current, quite controversial viewpoints concerning women’s studies versus gender studies and essentialism. She and Susan Gubar established themselves as formidable forces when they co- wrote The Madwoman in the Attic, published in 1979. Then followed the successful trilogy No Man’s Land (1988, 1990, 1994) and the Norton Anthol- ogy of Literature by Women. Every self-respecting literary theorist is supposed to know their oeuvre before he or she can pronounce them- selves on the recent history of literary criticism. The Madwoman was very special in its time. It was a book written by two people yet achieving a homogeneity which one would assume impossible to reach and it was truly innovative in its ‘woman-centred’ approach of Anglo-American literature.

Gender Role Identity and Attitudes Toward Feminism By: Paige W. Toller, Elizabeth A. Suter, and Todd C. Trautman Abstract In this study we examined relationships among gender role identity, support for feminism, nontraditional gender roles, and willingness to consider oneself a feminist in a sample of college students (N D 301). For female participants, we found positive relationships among higher masculinity on the PAQ (Personal Attributes Questionnaire), nontraditional attitudes toward gender roles, and the combined SRAI (Sex Role Attitudinal Inventory). A negative correlation was also found between lower scores on the PAQ masculinity–femininity index and the combined SRAI in women. For male participants, we found positive relationships among high femininity on the SIS (Sexual Identity Scale), willingness to consider oneself a feminist, positive attitudes toward the women’s movement, and the combined SRAI.
