One of the coolest “exploratoriums” we offer isn’t even in Western Massachusetts, though it’s just minutes over the Connecticut state line. That’s the fabulous New England Air Museum, located in Windsor Locks. Their collection contains over 100 aircraft ranging from early flying machines to supersonic jets. The interview was conducted in Ghent in the spring of 2000. Sandra Gilbert’s name is most often used in conjunction with that of Professor Susan Gubar as the author of The Madwoman in the Attic and the trilogy No Man’s Land. In the course of the interview Professor Gilbert talks about the hurdles she had to cross as a young woman academic, the choices she had to make as a mother, her successful collaboration with Susan Gubar and her current, quite controversial viewpoints concerning women’s studies versus gender studies and essentialism. She and Susan Gubar established themselves as formidable forces when they co- wrote The Madwoman in the Attic, published in 1979. Every self-respecting literary theorist is supposed to know their oeuvre before he or she can pronounce them- selves on the recent history of literary criticism. The Madwoman was very special in its time. It was a book written by two people yet achieving a homogeneity which one would assume impossible to reach and it was truly innovative in its ‘woman-centred’ approach of Anglo-American literature.

Approximately seventy-five adorned the exterior of the Homestead, the Dickinson family’s Federal-style residence in Amherst, Massachusetts (fig. 1). There were nineteen on the south façade, eleven on the north, twenty-two on the east, and twenty-three on the west. These included French windows, conservatory windows, and cupola windows. There were even two internal windows that looked out from one room into another.1 Windows permeated Dickinson’s deeply interior life. What did these windows mean to her? How might they have shaped her poetry? What can be recovered of her world by our engagement with her windows today? Dickinson’s interactions with windows were numerous and richly associative throughout her lifetime, suffused with playful imagination, ritualistic significance, and strong emotional attachment. She loved her windows, and she loved writing about them. Likewise, I will analyze the conceptualization of desire in the formation of gender identity, subject formation, and female representation according to the theory of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and the rereading of his theories by feminist psychoanalysis. Next, the issue of epistolary writing will be examined as a confessional and subversive kind of female writing, mainly from the perspective of Linda Kauffman. Finally, I will examine the subversive elements of sisterhood and female sexuality according to the radical ideas of bell hooks and Adrienne Rich. Key words: Authorship, gender identity, epistolary writing, sorority, female sexuality.
