2016 ANNUAL REPORT

2rs of e yea excellenc CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Being named a Carson Scholar this year really motivated me to continue in my pursuit of both academic and humanitarian excellence. It was very rewarding to see that the impact and “ magnitude of my service contributions are recognized. Carli Needle Grade 11 Winston Churchill High School, Potomac, MD 2 | Carson Scholars Fund ” MESSAGEA MESSAGE REFLECTION ON THE PAST 20 YEARS

Twenty years ago, my wife, Candy, and I saw a problem in the educational system within the United States and knew we needed to do something to fix it. We felt discouraged that while athletes were receiving trophies and showcases to celebrate their achievements, scholars, who would become our future leaders, were not receiving equal, if any, praise for their academic achievements. Our solution was to create the Carson Scholars Fund. Twenty years can make a big difference. When we visit schools now, we see trophies celebrating academic achievements proudly displayed right next to athletic trophies. We see our Carson Scholars receiving recognition for their academic successes not just once, but some as many as nine times! Our scholars are excelling both inside and outside of the classroom. We have scholars who are attending colleges and universities across the country and are earning degrees in a variety of fields. Our scholars and alumni alike are volunteering in their communities and within countries throughout the world. Children are discovering the possibilities that opening a book can hold by CONTENTS using their imaginations. 4 HISTORY Equally as important, we have witnessed the generous and selfless support of so many caring individuals, companies 5 OUR TEAM and foundations. Thanks to this noble spirit we have much REFLECTION to celebrate. 6 8 CARSON SCHOLARS PROGRAM 10 SCHOLAR/ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS 12 ACROSS THE NATION Benjamin S. Annual Report 2016 | 3 HISTORY OF THE CARSON SCHOLARS FUND

The Carson Scholars Fund was founded in 1994 to address the education crisis in the United States and to elevate the importance of academic excellence and humanitarianism. Dr. and Mrs. Carson felt compelled to take action. They believed that if children could be taught early to excel, they would stay motivated and have a higher chance of educational success later in life. The Carson Scholars Fund was built on these principles.

In 1996, the first Carson Scholarships were awarded. Students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarian qualities are nominated by their educators. Winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to be invested toward their college education, along with a recognition package, and an invitation to attend an awards banquet. Carson Scholars become role models and leaders at their schools. Carson Scholars are encouraged to reapply annually and renew their status.

In his autobiography Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, Dr. Carson wrote about how his life was changed once he embraced reading. So as the Carson Scholars Fund grew, the Carsons established a second program – The Ben Carson Reading Project. This initiative, which started in 2000, provides funding and support to schools to build and maintain Ben Carson Reading Rooms – warm, inviting rooms where kids can escape into the world of books. Each room is colorfully decorated and promotes Dr. Carson’s THINK BIG philosophy.

Annual Report 2016 | 7 CARSON SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The goals of the Carson Scholars Program goes beyond instilling an interest in college early on and assisting with the costs of college:

1 Carson Scholars are role models in their schools. The impact of our program extends past individual students and families to schools and classrooms. Carson Scholars encourage other students in their school to strive for excellence and serve as peer role models. Our scholarship program is available only to students in grades 4-11. These students have sufficient time to be recognized by their educators and peers, and to have the intended impact on their schools. Our research shows that 94% of our scholars feel that being named a Carson Scholar has helped them become role models in their school. 2 Carson Scholars are recognized by their schools. As part of the Carson Scholars Program, schools are provided with a trophy to be displayed proudly in display cases. The aim is to add value to academic achievements and to refocus the spotlight on education; too often athletic achievements are recognized more than academic success. Carson Scholars are honored for their academics and motivated to continue to strive for excellence.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CARSON SCHOLAR

Gabrielle Stine 2016 Carson Scholar Grade 5 Elmer Wolfe Elementary School, Union Bridge, MD “It was an honor to be selected as a 2016 Carson Scholar and to receive such a prestigious award. This recognition has given me a new level of confidence and I am proud to be a role model at my school. Dr. Carson inspired me to establish an Honor Roll Program at my elementary school. I am proud to say that students are now recognized for their academic success. The Carson Scholar Fund Award Ceremony was the best day of my life. I was honored to walk across the stage to meet and shake hands with Dr. and Mrs. Ben Carson. I will never forget that special moment. I have my medal and certificate, along with a picture of myself with Dr. and Mrs. Carson, proudly displayed in my room. This reminds me every day to THINK BIG and to strive to be recognized as a Carson Scholar every year. I will do my best and work hard to have seven gold star pins to attach to my Carson Scholar medal ribbon.”

22 | Carson Scholars Fund A BRIGHT FUTURE

Many things can change within two decades. Within that time, we have grown as an organization. We have expanded across the country and have developed chapters in every region. We have created 160 reading rooms to help children discover a love of reading. We have placed doctors in hospitals, lawyers in courtrooms, and teachers in classrooms. We have seen our scholars and alumni travel around the world for internships, study abroad classes, volunteer missions, and to seek job opportunities.

Twenty years from now, it is our hope that we will continue to inspire our students, scholars and alumni to work hard and do anything possible to reach their goals. By then, we hope to have a Carson Scholar at every school in the country.
