Separately, Van Duyne also supported a slate of tax policies that would primarily help the wealthiest Texans, like ending personal income tax and the estate tax, slashing corporate tax rates, and opposing any and all efforts to increase “the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses.” …While fighting against health care reforms. The tax cut was a loser for health care, as Republicans recommended paying for an increase in federal debt caused by the bill with cuts to Medicare and Social Security. Additionally, the tax bill would lead to more expensive health insurance and 13 million more uninsured Americans. Van Duyne expressed opposition toward the Affordable Care Act – saying it was “based on lies,” funded dishonestly, and has done profound damage to American health care – and celebrated Trump’s executive orders to scale back the ACA. Van Duyne supported Association Health Plans – plans which have a “long, well-documented history of fraud and abuse” leaving “hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid medical bills” – and have allowed discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions. As mayor, Van Duyne saved the City of Irving $1.5 million annually by cutting health care for city workers. …While supporting anti-immigration programs despite findings of racial profiling and proven harm to public safety. In 2006, the Irving Police Department Partnered with ICE on the agency’s “criminal alien program” (CAP). In 2007, as mayor, Van Duyne bragged about the program, noting that – under the program – if someone is arrested and cannot provide “documentation that they are a U.S. citizen,” the police contact ICE. In 2009, a Berkeley School of Law report found “that police in Irving, Texas, arrested Hispanics in far greater number for petty offenses as part of a federal criminal alien program” and showed data indicating arrests of Hispanics for traffic violations substantially increased “relative to whites.” In 2016, Van Duyne bragged that Irving police were “the first ones in the country” to participate in CAP and lamented that President Obama cut resources for the program. In 2019 and 2020, Van Duyne credited bringing ICE into her town with lowering crime rates and claimed that deporting “criminal illegal aliens” led to lower crime rates in Irving. Van Duyne supported Irving joining an ICE program that trained police officers to question people about their immigration status, which studies found harmed public safety by discouraging immigrants from reporting crimes or interacting with police. After disagreements with her colleagues and the Irving Chief of Police on the program, Van Duyne said it was their responsibility “to do what we can to protect our own,” while later claiming the program was not about race or nationality. …And while fighting against resources for those in need. In 2014, Van Duyne criticized the decision to use HUD funds to build a homeless shelter for teenage boys in Irving, saying the boys “should be at the prime of their health and able to work.” Van Duyne added, “The city and the federal government should not be paying to provide apartments for these kids, for these men. Nobody did that for me when I was that age.” Van Duyne also criticized cities for taking federal grants. Van Duyne Routinely Attacked Other Community Members And The Press A community activist sued Van Duyne for defamation after she called him a “whore.” Irving community activist Anthony Bond sued Van Duyne for defamation after she called him a ‘whore’ to the Dallas Morning News. Van Duyne’s comments stemmed from an affidavit from an unrelated lawsuit in which bond claimed city manager Tommy Gonzalez would often get him tickets to event. Bond did not sue for monetary damages but wanted Van Duyne to stop making defamatory comments. Diversity in leadership roles results in a more effective and fair government.1 By this measure, our democracy is dramatically failing younger Americans. Approximately 62 million Millennials were of voting age during the 2016 general election, according to Pew Research Center.2 In 2018, young voters, namely Millennials and Generation Z, are set to make up 34 percent of the eligible voting population.3 This gives young voters a larger share of the potential electorate than any other single generation.4 Yet, despite making up the largest potential voting bloc5 in the country today, young people are severely underrepresented at both the state and federal level. This representation gap impacts young people, and the issues they care about, directly. When elected officials aren’t representative of their constituents, this can lead to policies that are not responsive to the needs of the governed.

    2016 ANNUAL REPORT Muslim Women for ALL Women 2 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Assalaamu Alaikum (Peace Be Upon You), Dear Friends, Hind Jarrah, Ph.D. The year 2016 brought great accomplishments as well as difficult and sad times for TMWF. My prayers are that 2017 and the coming years bring peace, goodwill, and compassion to all. We continued to open our doors to all our brothers and sisters, from all faiths and communities, nationally as well as internationally. Victims of domestic violence (DV) with unique cultural and spiritual needs found an oasis of peace in our services and through our compassionate, dedicated, and committed counselors, case managers, and attorneys. Victims and their children moved out of the trauma and abyss of DV abuse, into a hope filled independ- ent state and triumphantly stood firm on their own two feet. Our Educational and Interfaith Outreach programs continued to build bridges of friendship and understanding. The Islamic Arts Revival Series 5th Annual Juried International Exhibition of Islamic Art was truly a success. We thank the amazing staff at the Irving Arts Center and the artists and speakers who participated. The Youth Leadership Development Program is needed now more than ever as it prepares the youth to become civically and socially engaged committed leaders of the future generation. Since the beginning of the TMWF Youth Leadership Development Program in 2007, over 500 youth have shown great leadership and participated in community service. We give a huge salute to TMWF’s generous, compassionate partner organizations, religious leaders and individuals who have put their faith in us.

Gabrielle Adjerad In light of what has been institutionalized in the nineties as “intersectionality” (Crenshaw, 1989), but emanated from a long tradition of feminism fostered by women of color (Hill-Collins, Bilge, 2016), feminist theory has increasingly shed light on the plurality of women’s experiences, the inseparable, overlapping and simultaneous differences constituting their identities, and the materiality of the various dominations engendered. At the turn of the twenty-first century, this paradigm seems compelling to address fictional diasporic narratives addressing the diverse discriminations encountered by migrant women and their descendants in the United States. However, adopting an intersectional feminist approach of literature, for research or in the classroom, raises methodological issues that this paper contends with. Some thinkers have considered the double pitfall of considering, on the one hand, the text as a mimetic document of plural lives and, on the other, of essentializing a symbolical “écriture feminine” (Felski, 1989). Some have highlighted the necessary critical movement between the archetypal dimension of gender and the social and historical individuals diversely affected by this ideology (De Lauretis, 1987). Yet, beyond this tension between an attention paid to abstraction on the one hand and experience on the other, we can consider that hegemony is made of different ideologies that may contradict one another (Balibar, Wallerstein, 1991).

We're here with some of the Black leaders of our country and people that are highly respected and people that have done a fantastic job and, for the most part, have been working on this whole situation with me right from the beginning. Participants. Yes. Yes. The President. And we've done a lot. We've done Opportunity Zones. We've done criminal justice reform. We've done things that people didn't even think possible. Criminal justice reform—we've let a lot of great people out of jail. Participants. Yes! [Applause] The President. And you know, Alice Johnson is, really, just such a great example. A fine woman. And she doesn't say she didn't do it; she made a mistake. But she was in there for 22 years when we let her out, and she had practically another 20 left. Participant. She did. The President.
