Fin dal 1990, quando era parroco di Mater Domini, a Catanzaro, “divenne il nuovo padre spirituale” di Gaetana Tolomeo (p. 97). Unendo la conoscenza diretta alle fonti e testimonianze disponibili, l’autore ora ci presenta la nuova biografia (rispetto a quella edita nel 2015 da Ida Chiefari) della “nostra” Nuccia. Ci rac- conta, per filo e per segno, un cristianesimo maturato e vissuto in modo eroico dalla Venerabile, resa immobile fin da piccola da un male incurabile. Il lettore può approfondire il calvario della figlia prediletta della nostra Chiesa e gioire con essa per- ché è proclamata “Venerabile”, giacché la Congregazione per le cause dei Santi ha promulgato il Decreto super virtutibus, riconoscendo ufficialmente che Gaetana Tolomeo (detta Nuc- cia) è stata una battezzata che - nel corso della sua esistenza - ha dato una luminosa ed autentica testimonianza cristiana, me- diante l’esercizio in grado straordinario delle virtù teologali, cardinali e delle altre virtù annesse (umiltà, castità, obbe- dienza alla Chiesa, …), nel corso della sua esistenza terrena, che si svolse dal 1936 al 1997. Davvero Dio continua a scegliere ciò che nel mondo è de- bole (1 Cor. 1,27). Primogenita di Salvatore e Carmela Pa- lermo, Nuccia nacque a Catanzaro, quartiere Sala, il venerdì santo (10 aprile) del 1936 (denunciata all’anagrafe il succes- sivo 19 aprile), e nella casa natia visse quasi tutta la vita, non potendo muoversi perché colpita da un’incurabile paralisi pro- gressiva e deformante.

Ravenna: Longo, 2013. Pp. 384. Il libro di Giuliana Adamo è ambizioso e, nella sua formulazione programmatica, predisposto a squadernare la tradizione narrativa occidentale di due millenni attraverso due luoghi, inizio e fine, cruciali sotto diversi punti di vista. Il tema del volume è, infatti, “l’ostinata resistenza dei modelli di inizio e fine del racconto dall’antichità fino ad oggi” (11), tema e insieme ipotesi di lavoro che portano con sé corollari altrettanto fondamentali, di cui l’autrice cerca di dare conto a partire dall’Introduzione. In prima battuta, la questione sul genere che, avendo in dote una cospicua bibliografia, viene riassunta e incentrata sui cardinali romanzo, romance, novel. La prospettiva, qui come del resto in tutto il libro, è prepotentemente diacronica, quasi teleologica, e come velocemente si avvicina al Novecento, altrettanto velocemente deve lasciare al bordo della strada l’arsenale critico che ognuno potrà trovare nelle generose e utilissime note. L’impresa di Adamo comporta, d’altronde, un vaglio di testi notevole: dalla Poetica aristotelica alle scuole critiche del Novecento, passando per i principali capisaldi della trattazione su retorica, poetica e generi letterari degli ultimi due millenni, c’è qualcosa di vertiginosamente (e pericolosamente) enciclopedico in L’inizio e la fine. La studiosa ha scelto per la sua analisi “classici con cui tutti gli scrittori successivi si sono confrontati direttamente o indirettamente, in modo aperto o dissimulato, con continuità e/o scarti, rifiuti, rotture” (15).
